Intro: Spoon Rings

here's how to make spoon rings. I've searched the site and cant find an instructable on how to make them, so i thought i would put one up. and sorry about the bad photos, i ain't too good with macro shots

STEP 1: What You Need

Hammer

Pliers

File

Socket wrench the same size around as your finger

Wire cutters/tin snips

And of course

A spoon (or fork) with a decorative handle in a pattern of your choice

STEP 2: Cutting the Spoon

First, pick an existing ring that fits the finger you want the spoon ring to fit, alternatively, you could use a set of THESE, then find a socket  that is a snug fit around the inside of the ring, once you find the correct size socket, measure the circumference of it with a tape measure (the cloth type works best) and cut the handle to that length with the wire cutters/tin snips. use a file to round out the edges.

STEP 3: Bending It

This step can sometimes be hard, depending on the spoon being used.
first, take the spoon and lay it on the socket. use a piece of heave fabric to cover it to prevent scratches, and hold with pliers (see pictures) then slowly bend it around the socket. now carefully tap the end flush with the hammer (a rubber mallet works better. but i didn't have one at the time of writing this).

STEP 4: Polish (Optional)

If your spoon was like mine and old and dull you might want to polish it. there are a few ways to do it but i recommend a buffing wheel and a bench grinder. but a little elbow grease, a soft  cloth, brasso (tarn x if using a sterling silver spoon) and a LOT of time and patentance will work just fine. now stand back and admire your beautiful creation. if anything was unclear just leave a comment with your question and i'l do my best help you

I am considering attempting making these. The tools are not a problem but was wondering where one gets the flatware at affordable pruces? Any response is appreciated.Thank You!

I got a handful of spoons and forks at a thrift store, only 25 cents each!
Secondhand stores thrift stores are a great place to find unique and rare ones.
I have had luck in thrift shops and recently got silver spoons for 50 cents each at an estate sale.
I’ve made a stainless steel ring but it’s too small. Would anyone know to to “spread” the ends apart to make it bigger?
Can you discuss in a little more detail the cutting portion. I have wire cutters and they are barely making a mark on a silver plated spoon.
I went to Harbor Freight and picked up a set of 58 inch bolt cutters. It cuts the spoon great but it takes two people; one to operate the bolt cutters and the other to hold the spoon because it so far away.

You wouldn’t believe the leverage though.
I just use a zip cutter on my rotary tool (drimmel) it is faster and makes a cleaner cut.

i have a harbor freight rotary tool, not Dremel. What is a zip cutter and does it fit universal or only dremel? I find those wafer thin cut off wheels just all snap and break before the job gets anywhere near done.

A zipcutter maybe not the real name, but yes it isbthose wafer wheels, but have lesa flex. If they are shattering you are pressing to hard, let the friction do the cutting, not force.

great, may be the end of my breaking those things; i have never been able to use them properly. thanx

I'm going to go make myself one now !! Widh me luck ,and I'll post pictures next! THX!!
That's so neat . I made one last summer with that exact same silverware.

We bought snake ring for our nephew made from a spoon handle when we visited St.John New Brunswick. $ 20.00

The seller made it sound like a difficult task to make one. This instructible proves otherwise.

This is really cool! I've been doing a project with spoon heads, but have nothing to do with the handles. This will be perfect:)

what do you do with the spoon handles? Been trying to come up with something clever so I don't have waste

Thanks for the comment. Please post a pic when your done. I'd love to see how they turn out

Can you do this on silver-plated wear? i have some beautiful spoons and forks that are silver-plated and they are extremely difficult to bend, scared of snapping them, I have tried heating gently with a blow torch, any ideas?

I have a beautiful stainless steel spoon I wish to make into a toe ring for my big toe. Does this work for this as well? I have a ring sizer and all the mentioned tools. I would like a benchtop vise, to hold socket.
A better picture of the ring, and my fork elephant for the other half of the equation. Tools used for the elephant were tin snips, neddle nose pliers, a cordless drill, and a bench grinder for smoothing (sand paper or some such would work as well). Thanks again to Mr. Mountaineer.
