So on this tutorial, I want to show you how to add crochet extensions to starter locs or braids.

Supplies

Step 1: Twisting the Hair

First thing you want to do is start with clean, washed, and towel dried hair. Part the hair in small sections and apply a small amount of braiding gel or a gel of your preference. I like to use BTL brand or JAM. Comb the product through the hair and use the comb to twist the hair. Start from the top and twist the comb in a circular clockwise motion while slightly pulling down towards the end of the strand of hair. Once you get to the end apply a single or double prong hair clip to hold the loc in place. Continue this until you have completely started locs over the entire head. You can also single braid the sections to add extensions if you are not wanting to start dread locs. Once completed the hair should be dried (I prefer a hooded dryer) for about 90 minutes or until dry enough to hold.

Step 2: Adding the Extension Hair

Once the hair is dry, you can start adding your crochet extension hair of choice. For this style, I used 20 inch Jamaican locs. Using a basic crochet needle,as shown above, push the needle through a section of hair (one loc or braid) attach one extension braid/loc to the end of the needle and pull through. Once the extension is pulled through the hair, take the tip end and take it through the loop of the extension and make a knot (as shown above)

Step 3: Feed and Finish

The final step is hiding your natural loc or braid. Once you put a knot to secure the extension, use the crochet needle to pull your natural hair through the center of the extension. You also have the option to take a bag of braiding hair to wrap around the top of the extension down to the end where your natural hair stops and tuck with the needle to cover and make your natural hair more discreet and make the extension loc look as though it is coming from your scalp. I skipped this step because my natural hair blended well. Finally, I pulled all the extension locs into a large pony tail and twist then wrapped into a nice neat bun. My finished look is pictured above.
