Introduction: Strawberry Heart Cookies

About: I am a student at UT Austin. I love to cook and I have a YouTube cooking channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/jonathanmalott

Just in time for valentine's day, I wanted to share with you what is quite possibly the simplest thing you can bake that tastes really good.

Seriously, anyone can make these cookies, especially boyfriends/girlfriends who don't know how to cook :)

Kudos to Sally's Baking Addiction for the inspiration for these cookies.

Let's get started!

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

To make these lovely little cookies, you will need:

  • 1 16.5 oz box of strawberry cake mix
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cup valentine's themed m&m's
  • nested-style heart shaped cookie cutters (optional, here are the ones I got)

Like I said, this recipe is idiot-proof. Also, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2: Mix the Ingredients

Combine the cake mix and baking powder into a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Put the eggs, vanilla, and oil into a smaller mixing bowl and whisk to combine.

Add the wet ingredients on top of the dry ingredients and stir to incorporate. Make sure there aren't any dry pockets of cake mix in the dough.

Stir in the Valentine's m&m's.

At this point you could chill the dough for a few hours, but if you are in a rush you can go ahead and scoop them out now :) I didn't chill the dough and they came out very good.

Step 3: Scoop and Bake

This dough will fill up about two regular sized half-sheet pans or cookie pans.

If you have a silicon baking mat, use it. If not, lay out a layer of aluminum foil on top of the pans and grease it with some no-stick spray.

I'm using a 2-tablespoon disher to portion out the dough.

Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Pull them out of the oven before they get brown!

Step 4: Cool and Cut

Let the cookies cool on the pans for a few minutes, then transfer them to cooling racks or your countertops to finish cooling.

After all the cookies are cooled down, grab your heart cookie cutters. The beauty of nested cookie cutters is that you can minimize your scrap by using the cutter that fits each cookie the best.

Step 5: Give to Your Significant Other

These cookies are a good dish for someone to make that doesn't have a lot of experience with baking. Plus, everyone loves heart-shaped things!
