Superhero Ring Made With Comic Books - Spiderman Ring

In this video I'm going to show you how to make one of these cool rings with old comic books.

This makes a wicked up-cycling project but just remember that with great ring making skill comes great responsibility!

(I have to stop with the Spider-man puns).

So as you can see I chose Spider-man for my ring, but I've had tons of suggestions for other heroes and villains. I'd love to make either a Deadpool or a Venom ring, but why don't you leave me a comment to let me know which hero/villain you'd like to see next!

Step 1: Finding a Comic & Selecting Artwork

This project began with a hunt at my local comic book shop. I found a load of great comic books that were usable but I settled on this Spider-man comic that features Venom.

Scrolling through the pages I found a few illustrations that would make awesome looking rings.

I found a picture of Spiderman that was big and bold and perfect for the outer portion of the ring. On the very next page I found a cool image of Spidey for the inside of the ring.

Step 2: Slicing and Dicing

I set my calipers to 10mm, laid them on the page and then used an X-Acto knife to mark two lines where I needed to cut. Then I just used a ruler and the knife to cut out the piece of artwork that I wanted to use for the outside of the ring.

I repeated these steps for the inside artwork too.

Next I cut three long, 10mm wide strips of paper from one of the comic book pages to make up the body of the ring.

I was left with the inside layer of the ring, the strips made the overall bulk and the outside artwork.

Step 3: Wrapping and Rolling

Time to glue it all together. I wrapped the inside layer around a former (I used a socket covered in masking tape for this), dabbed on a small amount of Mod-Podge on to the over lapping flap and stuck it down.

Then I just carried on wrapping, gluing and rolling all of the comic book strips together to form my ring.

To hide the seams where the comic book joined I cut out a little Spiderman face and stuck it to the outside and a black line for the inside.

Step 4: Mod-Podge Him

Before applying a proper finish I coated the outside and the inside of the ring with Mod-Podge.

On my first experiment I tried gluing the ring with superglue, but when the superglue hits the pages it kinda makes them translucent and it just doesn't look good.

By applying 2-3 layers of this stuff it stops the Superglue finish from making the pages translucent and keeps all of the details looking crisp.

So here's a little bit of that Mod-Podge action – oh yeah.

Step 5: Finish Him

Time to Finish Him. For a finish I used C.A glue a.k.a Superglue. I applied the glue carefully one layer at a time and gave it a little zoosh with some activator spray in between coats.

You could use lacquer or some kind of resin to finish a ring like this but I know that CA is incredibly durable and I've had a boat load of practice at using this stuff – C.A finishing is my superpower!

Step 6: Polish Him

I applied a thick coating of C.A glue on the inside, the outside and the edges of the ring. The next thing to do was to polish it up with a bazillion grits of sandpaper.

Basically what you want to do on this stage is to sand it up to highest grit that you possibly can. Just make sure that all of the finish is nice, smooth and even.

Polishing took a hell of a long time by hand but I just systematically worked my way through progressively finer grits of sandpaper on every surface of the ring.

Step 7: The Finished Spiderman Ring

So that's the end of the project and I'll be honest – I am massively enjoying this ring!

The processes I used to make this ring could be used for all sorts of materials really, so why stop at comic books?! You could use maps, scrap booking materials or even money.
