Swiss Army Knife Sheath

Intro: Swiss Army Knife Sheath

  I created this sheath for the Swiss Army Knives (can be altered for any and all pocket knives) that we were giving out for Christmas and they worked out so well I decided to share with all of you!  Before we begin I want to say that I didn't add a way to attach the sheath to your belt or keychain as I included a keyring to put on the knives themselves, but you could most definitely add one of the other ways yourself.  Now, let's get started!

Items you will need:
1. Pencil (for tracing your pattern)
2. Chalk (for marking on the dark side of the leather)
3. Scissors
4. Pins
5. Soft Leather (I got mine from an old Bomber Jacket)
6. Ruler
7. Heavy Tagboard (to make your pattern)
8. Velcro (I had a roll of 1/2")
9. Sewing Machine

  Start out by making your pattern.  I have attatched my patterns for you to print out and use if you would like.  If you choose to make your own pattern, trace around the knife and then measure at least 1/4" from your knife outline.  You don't need to go all the way around the outline as you want part of the knife to stick out, so go about 1/3 of the way up the outline.  Then for the back of your pattern, trace around your first pattern and flip it to create an oblong shape. 

STEP 1:

Once you've decided on the leather you're going to use, trace your patterns onto the wrong side and cut them out.  Cut your velcro, about 3/4" or whatever length you prefer.  Take your front piece of leather (the shorter of the two pieces), use the ruler and chalk to mark 5/8" down from the flat side.  Then line the top edge of the hooked part of the velcro on the marks and pin the bottom edge.  Sew along the top, remove the pin, sew across the middle to the other corner, sew the bottom, and then sew across the middle back to the starting corner.

STEP 2:

Take your back piece of leather, with the ruler and pencil, mark 3/8" from the top.  Line up the fuzzy part of the velcro with the marks and pin at the bottom.  Sew along the top, take out the pin, sew through the center to the opposite corner, sew across the bottom, and then through the center to the starting corner again.

Pin the front piece of leather to the back with just one pin.  I found this worked the best.

STEP 3:

Sew a very narrow seam, I did a 3/16" seam on mine (give or take).  Take your time and you'll get a better seam than I did.

You're now ready to insert your knife!

Nice! I've done a few similar from leather pieces from a local arts/crafts store, for a cell phone holder.. Mine were usually inverted, stitched about 1/8" from the edge, then turned inside-out to make clean edges. (also provided a little holding to keep the sides off the side buttons, such as hitting the volume which had a nasty habit of accepting messages on a pre-paid cell phone.)(oops! there goes another $0.30 !!)

Great idea! I thought about inverting on these, but liked the look of not. May consider other aplications for these thanks to you! :)
