Synaptic Fabric

Intro: Synaptic Fabric

For PJ's Mom: the tedious process of making the fabric for Synaptic, as seen in my avatar.

STEP 1:

Gather materials:
I used black light reactive rip-stop nylon, ribbons, yarn, thread and string.
You can use anything that supports your design idea or happen to have on hand.

STEP 2:

Take your yardage and start sewing a zig-zag stitch.
Add ribbons, yarn string and change your stitch thread color.
Overlap, overlay over-do.
Make all of your yardage for the final garment.

STEP 3:

Cut out your pattern.

STEP 4:

Pin right sides together and with a straight stitch sew the garment together.

STEP 5:

Use an iron to press seams open.
My fabric would melt so I finger pressed the seams open.

STEP 6:

Sew more, yes more, ribbons, threads and yarns over the seams.
Make sure the seams are pressed open as you sew over them.
More more more.........
The fabric should be textured, layered and puckered.

STEP 7:

Finish your garment.
Where needed match lining, facings and inter-facings.

WOW!!! I am in LOVE!!! I wonder if you could somehow add glitter to this... if so? OMG, LOVE!!! I'm imagining black-light reflective nail polishes and/or paints splattered onto the fabric to add character! (Because clearly, there's not enough character already!! *laughs*)

Well, I started to make her for myself. Unfortunately, by the time all of the additional structural details of linings and inter-facings were sewn into the garment I could no longer wear her. So goes the experiment......

that is truly a beautiful piece - where could I find black lite reactive fabrics ?

luckily they are everywhere! To help train my eye I found a little black light flashlight, or you could just get a black light LED and a coin battery. Carry it with you on your resource expeditions. This is how I found the surveyor's string, flagging tape, rip-stop nylon and so many other options.
