Introduction: TIE Interceptor

My name is Maciek and I am a student at Wachusett Regional High School. I was given the opportunity to enter this contest in my CAD class and I figured that it would be fun to make and submit something. I have previously entered a contest to make a forklift that could work in space and I really enjoyed competing. While browsing through the large number of posts on Tinkercad I ran into a Tie Interceptor made by Monacle. I really liked the look of it and I also remember watching the Star Wars movies and seeing how amazing all the ships looked so I was inspired to take Monacles design and try to amplify it a bit. I wanted to make it more smooth and modern looking, so that is what I set out to do in Fusion 360.

Supplies

Step 1: Making the Base

The first thing that I did was create half a sphere to make the cockpit and then I extended off of that by creating a sketch on the XZ plane and then making a curve. I then extruded the shape to make the connecting piece. Next, I created a new sketch on the XZ plane and made another curve. I then extruded that curve and repositioned it to make the wing.

Step 2: Making the Wing

The next step was to start to cut out some of the shapes that make the Interceptor less blocky. I did this by offsetting the YZ plane to be past the wing. I then sketched out the shape of the wing and cut through it. I then made the gun port thing by creating a trapezoid shape and extruding it. I then cut the left side of the trapezoid to make a hexagon. Next, I added a barrel on each point of the wing. Lastly, I added details by sketching and embossing on either the face of the hexagon or on an offset YZ plane.

Step 3: Back Wing Thing

I decided to add a cool-looking wing type of thing that I liked on the back of the ship. I did this by sketching on the YZ plane and just making a rectangle and then extending it. I then sketched on the top face of the rectangle and then cut out the sketch. Next, I created a new sketch on the top face and extruded it to make a design I liked.

Step 4: Some Extra Detail

After having most things done I added the details on the cockpit of the ship and the connection to the wing. I first made a sketch on the XZ plane and made the design of the window, then I extruded it. Next, I made a sketch on the YZ plane that was an offset curve of the base circle used. I then revolved this and cut the recently extruded design. Next, I hollowed out the wing connection and then added five tubes coming from one side to the other. I then added some other small personal details that I thought looked good.

Step 5: Finished Product

After being fairly happy with the shape I filleted and chamfered some of the edges to make it look more uniform. Next, I added the color. I went with a black and white theme because I think that it matches the stormtroopers well and also just matches the look of the empire altogether. The final step was just to mirror the ship across the YZ plane to make the full TIE Interceptor.
