Introduction: TV Protector

About: I am a senior laboratory technician in a analytical facility by day and by night I make and fix things. I prefer to work with wood but will give anything a go. I also enjoy gardening and an kept busy by my yo…

When our son became a button pressing, knob turning toddler it was time to protect the TV and other AV equipment with a physical barrier.

The only option to buy seemed to be fire guard type things which were all far too tall. So I made the crayon fence.

Step 1: Tools and Supplies

Supplies:
The crayons are made form 3x1 pse timber
Frame from 1.5" square pse timber
Felt pens and paint for decoration
Wood Screws

Tools:
Mitre saw with scrap wood stop block
Drill/Driver
Paint brushes
Straight edge
Tape measure
Sander

Step 2: Making Crayons

- Cut you timber to the length needed to protect your TV system
- For ease or reproducibility set the stop block on you saw so the point of the crayon in half way across the timber
- Set the angle of the saw to create point I used 23 degrees
- Cut all the points of as many crayons as needed.  My crayons were spaced 2.5" apart.
- Round all points on sander
- Cut framing to length

NOTE:
There are many ways of cutting the points (table saw, jig saw, band saw), I used a mitre saw as that was most convenient for me.

Step 3: Assembly

The crayons were then attached to the framing bars with two screws in each bar. One bar at the base and one use below the shoulder of the crayons. It is important to secure these well as they will get pulled on.

Crayons were spaced 2.5" apart.

The frame once completed was fixed to the wall either side of the TV unit with screws and raw plugs (sorry picture missing).

I then marked up the crayons using felt tip pen and painted the tips in with paint.

This successfully protected our TV for over two years while our son was in training not to randomly press buttons.

Wat if they fall and they stab themselves with the top

The tops are rounded over. The fence is quite tall so not sure how a small child could fall on it. All the time we had it up we didn't experience any injury from it.
Thanks for your concerns.

Cute I also would probably round of the tops... kids always wear the colored pencils lead down and break the tip of crayons anyway. :}

Man, Wish I had thought of this when my first was little. We just kinda blocked it off as best we could with an ottoman and some other random stuff. This would have been much better and much nicer looking.
