Introduction: Test Tube Planter | Propagation Station

About: Handmade crafts and products that I make using recycled or waste, cheap and easy to available materials. Also custom products are made using a mix of materials.

Plant pots are a cheap and fast way to provide decoration, that's why I built this wooden Test tube planter or you can say a plant propagation station that can carry two and five tubes for holding the plants.

Many studies says that Indoor planting is a great way to improve the air quality of your home. According to some articles it says that in a day, a person spends most of his time by staying inside a room or chamber. So, it is very much important to breath a quality air most the time. And here comes the indoor planting that will help you to get a circulated pure air.

There are many indoor plants that you can thrive in low light conditions, but there are two different ways to plant them, either in soil or in water. So, do some research your own and find the perfect plants for your home.

So, I've shown a simple way to get some indoor plants and organize them in a very decorating way to improve you home. So, let's see the making now.

Some indoor plants : - e.g. pothos, lucky bamboo, snake plants, spider plants, arrowhead plants, zz plant, aloe, chinese evergreen, kentia palm, succulents, rubber plant, air plant, split leaf, etc.

Step 1: Tools & Materials

Below are few Tools and Materials that will be needed for making the product,

TOOLS

  • Hacksaw
  • File Set
  • Drill Machine
  • Drill Bit (16mm hole cutting bit)
  • Sandpaper
  • Ruler
  • Cutter
  • curving Tools

MATERIALS

  • Test Tubes
  • Wooden Beads
  • Wood Glue
  • Varnish & Brush

Step 2: Preparing Wood Pieces

Here I've used Gamari Wood pieces for the making. It is lightweight and very soft wood (you may consider other wood as your choice).

I made two varieties of the planter, 2 tube holder and 5 tube holder. So sizes will vary accordingly. Keep at least 2cm gap between two consecutive test tubes, so that plant leaves may get it's space.

So, mark and cut the pieces as shown and sand the roughness.

Step 3: Make Tube Holes

Here I've used 15mm Test Tubes for holding the plants, so I had to cut a slight bigger hole. In this way it will move freely and will not fall. Now, cut and sand the edges.

I used 16mm flat drill bit for making the holes.

Step 4: Glue Them Together

Then, I used regular wood glue and fixed all the pieces and tightened with Rubber bands and kept overnight for drying.

Step 5: Sand Again

Now, again carefully Sand all the edges and corners with 180 to 220 grit fine sandpapers.

Step 6: Adding Side Supports

Here, I've used some triangular shaped wood pieces and added them on both left and right bottom sides. It will provide an extra stability to the base and will not fall on standard jerking.

Step 7: Applying Coating

Then, I finally applied some Varnish as a coating agent and it suddenly enhances the beauty and added a glossy finish to the product. Also it will keep the wood safe from moisture and other wood insects.

Step 8: Final Product

Now, our product is finished. See how easy it is to make a beautiful Test Tube Planter. Hence install the Test Tubes into the holder and put some plants of your choice and enjoy. You can put any plant that can thrive in water or any indoor plants also, like pothos, lucky bamboo, ficus, dumbcane, spider plants and all.

And you can also use it as a propagation station for multiplying your plants or propagating plant cuttings.
