Introduction: The BEST Fire Starting Tinder

About: Just an aviation dork with some strange, wild, fun, or dangerous hobbies and interests.

This is the best tinder and fire starting material I've ever found and its CHEAP!!!! Simple to make and VERY easy to use. This method of starting fire will make your next camp out or survival situation much easier. Lets get started.

What you will need:

~Medicine bottle or small jar (recommend plastic so it doesn't break and become a hazard).

~Drier lint

~Petroleum jelly (optional, but useful for rainy situations).

Step 1: Dry Some Clothes

After you finish a few loads of laundry, check your dryer lint trap and remove the lint. This stuff is amazing how flammable it is. If you are curious how quickly it will light, take a small amount and put it on a piece of aluminum foil and spark it. It should light in a couple strokes and blaze quickly. Make sure not to burn anything in the process.

Step 2: Add Tinder to Bottle

Compress the lint into a small ball and start filling the jar until it is full or at the desired amount. I fill mine completely with as much lint as I can get so I have plenty when I need it.

***OPTIONAL***

You can take the seal off the inside of the lid off and stuff some petroleum jelly under the cap and replace the cover. This can be used to coat the lint prior to use for wet situations.

Step 3: Close the Lid

And you are done!! That's it. You now have a small, portable and VERY useful tool for starting a fire in the wild. You can also attach a fire sparker to the outside of the bottle with a rubber band or hot glue so there is always one handy. Now put the bottle in your pack, car, or survival kit and you are ready for the zombie apocalypse.

May the odds be ever in your favor!

Since tinder can be made or found in the wilderness in dry conditions I find it more useful to always have your dryer lint (or cotton balls because they are also super cheap) dipped in the petroleum jelly and stored. I usually store mine in a zip lock bag so if I ever run out I can still have petroleum jelly residue left over to dip naturally occurring tinder in helping it burn in wet conditions. I'll update this post with a link to my instructable for my bug out bag I'm going to post to this contest, which will include pictures of what I'm talking about.
