You missed the most important step and should always be step 1,check the fire arm to see if loaded,no I don't mean by looking down the barrel(which should never be done unless you are sure it is unloaded)but by racking the slide and inspecting for any rounds!I hope this saves some newbies life or face in the future!Safe shooting is always a must!

I hope anyone who owns an AR 15 reads the owners manual and already knows how to do this :(
I find its easier to remove the hand guards first while the lower receiver is still attached to the upper. The butt stock is nice and flat and your not fighting the forward assist with the removal. To save your fingers you can also ask a second person to pull the grips while you mash down on the slip ring.
For cleaning just put the whole thing into the dishwasher, oil everything down and turn it back to the Armorer and your good to go. (I'm kidding.)
