Introduction: The Timber Lumber Mover

About: I live in Montréal, I am interested by almost everything except science fiction ;)

We have the project to do something like this A frame shelter and we planned to use the wood from fallen trees we have on our property.

It could be a great idea but the problem is that the wood is far from our house (around 400 meter) and we don't have any quad or horse to help us gather it.

Supplies

  • Some wood to be moved
  • 4 steel lawn mover wheel
  • 1 steel rod 1/2 inch
  • Some hose clamps

Tools

  • 1 cordless drill
  • 1 drill bit 1/2 inch
  • 1 hole saw

Step 1: In the Middle of the Wood

So first we decided to divide the trunks in slabs 2'' thick (we used an Alaskan mill... This is another story)

We had a lot of difficulties moving the trunks but we were able to move the slab from one point to another which was close (the slab were 14 feet long) but we were not able to go down the hill with them.

It was really too big to go on a wheelbarrow or on a hand trolley...

We then need to find a solution.

Step 2: The Design of the Mover

Instead of thinking of a buggy on which we will attach the slab, we decided to transform each slab in a self moving one.

We had a set of 4 steel lawn mover wheel and 1 steel rod (for another project).

We add some piece of wood between each wheel to stabilize them, pass the rod in 2 wheels and 2 separators, then go through the slab and after that added the 2 remaining wheels and separators. We secured everything with the hose clamps.

And that's it.

We then were able to move all our 13 14 feet hemlock slabs

Step 3: The End

Step 4: The Bonus

When we had finished to move all the slabs, we came back to clean up the place...

we heard some wood cracking... And see in the middle of the picture who was watching us ;)
