This build uses vodka bottle miniatures as candles for the Menorah. They are illuminated using LEDs that mimic candle flames. The build incorporates a kit from Evil Mad Scientist that has an integrated circuit designed to illuminate the candles in a preset sequence. I will describe the modifications I made to the circuit for this build. The base was constructed from oak and finished with Danish Oil.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Step 2: Build the Circuit From the Kit With Modifications

The Deluxe LED Menorah kit should be made according to the directions supplied with these exceptions:

Use the flame LED instead of their LED's
Use a pushbutton switch instead of the their miniature circuit board pushbutton switch
Attach 12 inch wires to the places on the circuit board for the switch
Attach 12 inch wires color coded for the positive and negative leads of each of the candles. These will be soldered to the LED's under the bottles.

Step 3: Build the Base

The base can be any dimensions you want. My base is 14 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches high. I cut a slot to hold the top about 1/16 inch below the top of the sides. The bottom is a piece of masonite and I cut a slot 1/16 of an inch above the bottom of the sides. I cut one end about 1/4 inch short so that the bottom could slide into the bottom and it is held fast with a screw. I drilled a thumbhole to make it easy to open the box. I finished the base with Fruitwood Danish Oil with a finishing coat of beeswax.

I drilled 1/4 inch holes for the LED's for each of the 8 candles and the Shamash.

Step 4: Superglue the LEDs to the Bottle

I superglued the LED's to the bottoms of the bottles. Using an accelerator really helps. I used 2P10 superglue. Then I soldered the leads that go to the circuit board. I used shrink tubing to insulate the leads.

Step 5: Epoxy the Bottles to the Base

I used 5 minute epoxy to fix the bottles to the base

Step 6: Wire the LEDs to the Circuit Board

I wired the leads from the LED's to the circuit board

Step 7: Wire the Switch

Insert the switch and wire it to the board. Because the wood was a bit deep for the switch I drilled a 3/4 inch hole about 1/2 inch deep with a forstner bit on the drill press
