Intro: Toilet Mini Garden

Hi again,
recently I broke my toilet tank hand wash basin, not too much but still very visible and ugly,I contacted Maker for replacement just to find out that making of this model was discontinued about 15 years ago.Since whole thing is still perfectly usable i decided to mask the damages by placing a fake Ivy vine over it.But after couple of minutes it comes to me that this could be used as small hydroponic garden with the real plants such as pothos or any other water tolerant plants.Toilet itself is one of the brightest places in the shop so there is no light deficiency. It took me about 15 minutes to finish the whole project with almost no cost, all of the stuff and tools i already had.If you have to buy everything it would cost about 10 bucks.

STEP 1: Tools Needed

All the tools I needed were piece of mosquito screen for the windows,Torch or hot glue gun, glue stick, scissors for cutting the screen and a screwdriver for adjusting the water flow rate in the bowl.

STEP 2: Gluing the Screen

First thing is to glue the screen over the drain hole in the bowl so it acts as a filter and barrier so the substrate would not fall in to the tank and to prevent clogging of the hole which could lead to flooding of the whole bowl, not the mention the toilet itself.I preferred to use gas torch over the hot glue gun,it's faster (doesn't require waiting for the gun to heat up ) and in this case i didn't needed to be very precise it's going to be covered any how.

STEP 3: Substrate

After the glue is set I added hydroponic expanded clay into the bowl ,plant the pothos and cover it with peat moss and some sphagnum moss to keep the high moisture level,

STEP 4: Finished Double Green Toilet Top

I'm going to add some other small plants and some pebbles on the top of soil just for visual sake, also I'm adding organic liquid fertilizer on the weekly basis just before I leave my shop for off-days,so the fertilizer won't leech out in the minutes. That is about it ,i still need to wait couple of month till the leafs cover the damage...
Message me with any questions or comments, thank you for viewing.

I have never seen a wash basin like that! its amazing! What would be some great smelling plants to put in there? Maybe some kind of mint?
I'm still pondering the wash basin. I've never seen anything like that! What a great space-saver and system. I am surprised this idea didn't take off.
I have seen them in hostel in San Francisco and in Europe.  Great use for small spaces!
This is still avalable try real goods ( the solar store).
I have never seen the toilet wash basins commercially available. Did you buy the toilet and basin as a unit or was the basin bought separate and added to an existing toilet? Nice idea for all of those who like to have plant in their house but forget to water them. This would never work at my house though. There are too many people the plant would be drowned from over-watering, and my mother wouldn't know what to do with her mason jars of Q-tips and cotton balls if she couldn't put them on the back of the toilet...
that is really cool. I want to try it!
