Introduction: Toy Boat

This Instructable explains how to make a simple toy boat using a 3D printer.

Supplies

  • 3D Printer
  • Computer capable of handling both Tinkercad and a 3D printing software
  • Tinkercad account

Step 1: Making the Base

Click and drag a half-circle from the shape menu onto the workspace. Click the half-circle that has just been placed and flip the shape and rotate it from the side by 180°. Once the half-circle is flipped, increase its size. The default size should be set to 20 millimeters x 20 millimeters x 20 millimeters. Set the size of the shape to 60 millimeters x 124 millimeters x 44 millimeters.

Step 2: The Wall

Drag a cylinder onto the workspace. Align the two shapes by selecting both the half-circle and the cylinder by pressing the "L" key. Align the shapes until the two shapes are centered. Select the cylinder, and raise it to the very top of the hollowed half-circle. Hold the shift key as you decrease the size of the cylinder, and decrease the size until you see the value of the height change to a 4.00. Raise the cylinder 2 millimeters. After raising the cylinder, set the length of the cylinder to the same measurements as the hollowed half-circle (minus the height), 60x124x4 millimeters. Duplicate the cylinder, and increase the height of it to 20 millimeters. After increasing the height, select the "Hole" option. Select all the shapes on the workspace, and group them by pressing both the Control and G keys. Feel free to change the color of the shapes before grouping them.

Step 3: Making the Flag

Drag a normal cylinder into the workspace. Set the size of the shape to 4 millimeters in both length and width and 80 in height. Once the cylinder is set to the proper height, align the cylinder and the base of the boat until they are centered. Move the cylinder 20 millimeters towards the longer end of the base. After moving the cylinder, drag a roof into the workspace. Decrease its size to 16 millimeters for the length, 4 millimeters for the width, and 12 millimeters for the height. When that's done drag it to the top of the flag pole until it is around the same spot as the last picture shown above (Green flag with red markings). When that is done, group the roof, cylinder, and the base of the boat to one shape.

Step 4: Making the Forward (Front of Ship)

First drag a pyramid into the workplace. Afterwards, tilt the pyramid by 45°, so that the tip of the pyramid is facing away from the flag. Now, align the pyramid and the boat by using the align tool until the flag and the pyramid are centered. After that, set the size of the pyramid to 42 millimeters in length, 16 in width, and 26 in height. Once the size is set, move the pyramid across the boat, and adjust the position of the pyramid until it looks similar to the second picture above. After adjusting the pyramid, group both the boat and the pyramid and group them so they form one shape: the finished boat!

Step 5: Making the Steering Wheel

Get a cylinder from the shape menu, set the size to 8mm in length and width and 2mm in height. When that is done, get a paraboloid and drag it into the workspace. Decrease its size to 2 millimeters in both length and width, and 10 millimeters in height. Drag the paraboloid into the boat behind the forward of the ship, then put the cylinder facing the flag. Although, don't attach it to the paraboloid. Drag a sphere from the workspace. set its size to 2 millimeter in length, width, and height. Drag it towards the paraboloid and align the sphere, paraboloid, wheel, and the boat until it looks like the final image shown above. Make sure the sphere is connected to the paraboloid and the wheel. After connecting the shapes, group them.
