Introduction: Traditional Jewelry Box

Jewelry box is one must-have item in a bridal trousseau, which she can use to store all her jewelry and even take along with her while traveling. Jewelry boxes typically contain several little compartments, each for storing one particular type of ornament. Using the decoupage technique I have created this traditional box which not only gives a ethnic look to the box, but also is very useful and attractive. Decoupage is the process that gives paper an appearance of depth and makes patterns and pictures look as though they are actually painted on the decoupaged object. Decoupage is a fun and easy way to decorate just about any object, including household items from small vases to large pieces of furniture--the possibilities are endless. A decoupage jewelry box is what i have created from paper and mdf wooden box.

Material Required:

  • MDF box
  • Craft paper
  • Acrylic colors
  • Decoupage Glue
  • Brushes
  • Sponge
  • Glitter Varnish
  • Old Earrings to accessorize

Step 1: Color the Box

First step is to color the box, depending on the color combination of the paper, you can choose any contrasting color, I wanted a bright pink color so mixed Red and white acrylic color. You can leave the portions which will be decoupaged by paper.

Step 2: Cutting of the Papers

By the time, box is getting dried, cut the paper as per the box dimensions. For the top cover, cut 6.5 X 5.5 inch, for longer sides of the box - 7 X 2.5 inch, 2 strips and for shorter sides, 5.75 X 2.5 inch, 2 strips are required.

Step 3: Apply Decoupage Glue - Layer 1

Apply the even coat of layer of Decoupage glue (Mod Podge) on the top of the cover using the sponge.

Step 4: Pasting the Paper

Carefully place the paper on the and press it gently so that no bubbles are left between the paper and the base.

Step 5: 2nd Layer of Decoupage Glue

Now apply a second coat of the decoupage glue. The magic of the decoupage glue happens at this step, it gives the effect as if the print of the paper is painted and not pasted.

Step 6: Complete the Box

Follow the same process ( Step 3 to 5) for the sides of the box.

Step 7: Accessorize the Box

Let it dry for around 15 mins. Once it is completely apply the glitter varnish on entire box. You can accessorize the top of the box with the old jewelry to give a traditional jewelry box look. Its ready to use :)
