Trash to Treasure: an Old Wooden Door Picked From the Trash Becomes a Dinning Room Table

Door Table:

 In the mist of my daily travels, I noticed on the side of the road an old door, in a pile of trash. (Yes I love to trash pick) I brought it to my garage and got right to work! I put the door on folding legs so it was off the ground. I used an electric hand sander to get the first couple layers of paint off. (That was a lot of work). Once I got it to almost its first coat of paint and original wood, I then started to chip off some of the paint to give it a rustic, shabby chic look. Then once I was happy with the look, I then lightly sanded it by hand. Once it was nice and smooth I put one coat of polyester stain on the door. On the other side of the door I sanded it down with an electric sander and put polyester stain on, (That way when you sitting at your table your legs aren’t rubbing against something sharp).

     Now I am ready to attach the legs to the table. I purchased 4 table legs from my local home improvement store (unfinished).  Then I painted and aged the legs myself, to match my door. I turned my door face down on the folding legs, so I can nail my legs to the door. I used metal brackets to screw the legs down. You can purchase them at your local home improvement store. Once the legs were in place, I had to measure the length of my dinning room chairs from seat to floor. I realized that the table was to tall for my chairs so then I had to shave off just a few inches on all four legs and sanded it down to make them smooth and even. Before you turn your table over, you must attach support beams from leg to leg, I also did a support beam down the middle of the table. Just measure the length in-between the legs and cut your support beams to that size and nail them to your legs. Now you are ready to turn your table over!!

     I needed to make the surface of my table even, because it is a four panel door so my plate settings would not have laid right. So I measured the width and length of my door panels and had my local home improvement store cut me pexti-glass to fit inside the panels. Your door table is now done!!!

     But I of course wanted to add just one more thing. I love to collect cute door knobs so I drilled a hold on the face of the leg and filled it with wood glue and place little antique door knobs along each leg.
