Introduction: Tribal Mask Using Air Dry Clay

Let's Make A Simple And Colorful Tribal Mask Using Air Drying Clay In Just A Few Steps.

Supplies

  1. Air Dying Clay (amount depending on size of the mask)
  2. A Cylindrical Basket
  3. Paper
  4. Gloves
  5. Rolling Pin
  6. A Sharping Tool (eg. small knife)
  7. Toothbrush
  8. Acryllic Paints or markers
  9. An Elastic Band

Step 1: Draw Your Mask Design

On a piece of paper draw a starting image of what u want your mask to look like.

It doesn't have to be exact. Just a vague image.

Step 2: Prepare Your Base

Take a Cylindrical basket with a large enough radius and cover it with a newspaper page or any kind of paper.

Make sure that the basket is fixed and not free to roll around by keeping a wedge on both sides.

Step 3: Prepare Your Clay

Knead and roll your air drying clay into a ball and then flatten it into plane sheet with the help of a rolling pin with a thickness of at least 5mm.

You can wear hand gloves to keep your hands clean and use water to smoothen the ball.

Then use a knife to cut out the shape of your face and put it on the basket

Step 4: Get Ready to Add Features

Drag a toothbrush over the face to give it a wood grain effect.

Make holes for the eyes with a knife and make vague marks over where you're going make your features

Step 5: Add Features and Let It Dry

Make the features like nose, lips etc. with clay and stick it to the face.

To stick it onto the face you're going to need slip. Slip is just some clay mixed with water to make a paste like compound.

Before pasting the features onto the mask roughen both the surfaces with a knife or a fork and then apply some slip on both surfaces and paste them together.

U can also add some extra design with some other tools like a pen top.

After u are done let it dry for at least 24 hours

Step 6: Make It Colorful

After its completely dry paint the mask with Acrylic paint/Oil paints or Markers.

Make it as colorful as you want.

Step 7: Attach Elastic Band

Stick an elastic band from a normal face mask on the back of your mask with the help of a glue gun and some tape.

Step 8: Enjoy Your Beautiful Creation

Use the Mask to decorate your rooms and liven up your space by hanging it on the wall or placing it on a table or a stand or u can just wear it as a face mask and show your friends.

Feel free to make creative adjustments to any or all the steps above as much as you want.
