These whimsical pompom-topped tree decorations were inspired by Dr. Seuss' The Lorax. We made them to decorate our makerspace's parade float this summer.

The truffula trees would make great party decorations!

YuKonstruct is the first makerspace in Canada's north. Our mission is to provide access to shared space, quality tools, available expertise, and a collaborative environment to help makers build anything!

Step 1: Materials

You'll need:

  • pool noodles, foam pipe insulation or something similar (we used donated foam tubes that used to protect the posts of an old trampoline)
  • duct tape in a contrasting colour
  • tissue paper
  • string or thin wire

Step 2: Making the Trunks

Wrap the foam noodles with duct tape stripes.

For longer trunks, we taped together a few foam tubes.

Step 3: Making the Tree Tops

The tree tops are made of Martha Stewart style tissue paper pompoms.

Layer together several sheets of tissue paper. Accordion fold the tissue paper and then tie it together in the center. Fluff it out into a pompom shape by carefully pulling apart each tissue paper layer.

On some of the pompoms we rounded the edges or cut them into points with scissors before fluffing them.

Tie or wire the pompoms to the tops of the trunks. You can make sure they are secure with a bit of extra duct tape.
