Introduction: Try Sea Hunting at Home !

About: The Innokick Master’s enables students from Engineering and Architecture, Business, Management and Services, and Design and Visual Arts backgrounds to acquire the interdisciplinary skills they need to create i…

Here's how it works :

Try and hit the sea urchins when they pop out from the surface of the sea ! You need to be at least two people to play (you can also invite your imaginary friend). The person manipulating the handles can play around bringing up sea urchins. It is up to the opponent to remain focused and try to hit the sea urchin as soon as it appears ! The winner is determined by his or her speed : count how many sea urchins you catch in 15 seconds for example.

Have fun with this easily home-made game and go crazy with the decorations !

Feel free to share pictures or videos of your prototypes & and of you interactive with the game :-)

Step 1: What You'll Need

Tools :

  • Hot glue gun
  • Stick glue
  • Cutter
  • Cutting Mat
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Printer (for patterns)
  • Scissors

Materials :

  • Ball (for example a cat toy)
  • 1x Cardboard box (we use a 37cms x 24cms x 22 cms)
  • Some extra thick and thin cardboard
  • 3x finished toilet paper rolls
  • 11x Barbecue grill sticks (25 cm)
  • 5x Straws
  • 1x Ball of yarn
  • 10x Googly eyes
  • 6x Thick coloured sheets (ideally blue)
  • 2x Thick sheets of glossy paper
  • Seller tape
  • Duct tape
  • Glue stick

Step 2: Print & Cut Out Your Template

This is a template to make a pom pom / fuzz ball. It represents a sea urchin.

  1. Print the template
  2. Cut it

Step 3: Create 5x Pom Poms

  1. Grab your 2x cut out cardboards
  2. Place them on top of each other
  3. Take your wool through the centre and tie a knot
  4. Wind the wool round the cardboard - until it is completely covered
  5. Make sure to secure the last thread by sticking it underneath or glueing it to the cardboard
  6. Now cut threads in-between the two cardboards
  7. Secure it by adding another thread in the middle and tie a knot - to make a fuzz ball
  8. Take out the cardboard and trim the pom pom if necessary
  9. Repeat this four times
  10. WARNING ! It should not make it easily into the hole, otherwise the game will not work (see 2 last pictures)

Step 4: Build the Intern Lever

  1. Take a stras, some seller tape and a barbecue grill stick
  2. Place the straw and the stick on you mat
  3. Place them in a straight line leaving 2 cm in-between
  4. Add a piece of seller tape underneath (as shown on the picture)
  5. Stick them together with two additional pieces of seller tape
  6. The mechanism must remain flexible as well as keep the two bits fully secure

Step 5: Pierce the Box

  1. Take your cardboard box and one toilet roll
  2. Place the toilet roll on the top of the cardboard box to situate the hole
  3. Draw a circle around your toilet roll
  4. Using the bodkin, pierce through the cardboard following the line
  5. Take out the circles
  6. Repeat four more times
  7. While you're at it, cut out any other useless bit in or out of your bow

Step 6: Add in Your Sea Tubes

  1. Cut the toilet rolls to a length of 4cm
  2. Work on the inside of your cardboard box
  3. Place the tubes in the holes
  4. Stick them on using your glue gun

Step 7: Add an Extra Level to Secure Your Tubes

  1. Cut 2x pieces of cardboard the length of your box and height of 4cm
  2. Glue them on the sides of the inside of your box
  3. Now cut a rectangular piece that you can fit inside your box
  4. Now pierce 5x holes at the back of your box, to allow your straws to fit through and reach the tubes
  5. Glue your rectangular piece to the bottom of you box, right on top of the rolls

Step 8: Install the Levers

  1. Pierce the back of your box - aligned to the tubes (and where you wish your sea urchins to pop out off)
  2. Insert a staw through the hole and out of the tube
  3. Insert the BBQ stick in the hole at the back of the box
  4. Stick it on with seller tape / duct tape
  5. Make sure the lever noves correctly and isn't stuck
  6. Repeat this step for the 4x other levers
  7. Feel free to add-on more seller tape whenever necessary, the structure must be secure !

Step 9: Welcome Little Sea Urchins !

  1. Cut off the extremeties of the straw so that they will poke out at approx. 6cm when the lever is lifted up
  2. Drop a "tiny" bit of hot glue on the pom pom to attach it to your stick
  3. Hold it & press it for a couple seconds
  4. Trim the pumps so that they stay on the surface, but fall into the tube if they are hit.
  5. Then why not add some cute little googly eyes, with glue again. You could even stick on a mouth and ears with draw-on paper ! Go crazy !

Step 10: Now Let’s Decorate Our Box !

  1. Pick a colour for you background - for instance blue.
  2. Grab 3 sheets of A4 blue paper
  3. Place them on you box to check the fit than stick the 3 sheets together to make it easier to stick on.
  4. Make a clear cut on each corner and fold the edges.
  5. When you’re ready, apply glue on 3 surfaces : the front of the box and the sides. Apply it close to the edges and draw and X in the middle.
  6. Now carefully apply your paper and use a ruler to flatten the surface. Make sure you stick all the edges as well.

Step 11: Now Let’s Add Some Waves !

  1. Pick another colour - for instance dark blue.
  2. Cut the paper into the shape of waves.
  3. Apply glue on the bottom of the background/box than then stick your waves on.

Step 12: Now That the Background Is On, Let’s Apply Shiny Sides !

  1. Pick another colour of your choice - for instance silver.
  2. Measure the height of you box and cut the paper accordingly, with a 4 cm width.
  3. Cut out 4 shiny sides then stick the them on each corner of the box.

Step 13: Finally Lets Cover Up the Top of Our Box With Shiny Paper !

  1. Pick you colour, or like us, select a textured paper that reminds you of water and with make your box look funky !
  2. Your piece of paper should be of the same dimensions as the box [xxx].
  3. Now cut out the 5 circles through which will jump the sea urchin.
  4. And you’re ready to glue ! Position you paper correctly and make sure to clean the surface real quick form any glue residue or fingerprints.

Step 14: Decorate the Sticks Handles

  1. We can also decorate this sticks by adding handles - in the shape of fish !
  2. Cut out a fish shape from thick cardboard. If it’s thick it’ll be easier to pass the stick through.
  3. Cut out a fish shape from thick paper - for instance silver like the top of the box.
  4. Now glue the paper fish on the cardboard and your handle is done !

Step 15: Make a Cool Hammer Out of a Cat Toy !

  1. Stick you cat ball to the end of the stick with hot glue.
  2. Keep it still while t dries.
  3. Now to make it look like an octopus, let’s pass some wool through the holes and plat them.
  4. Repeat until your octopus looks realistic.
  5. Add on some home-made or store bought googly eyes (optional).
  6. Then paint the whole surface of the ball / head.
  7. There you have it ! An octopus ready to catch some sea urchins

Step 16: LET'S PLAY

Invite a friend to play

  1. One player operates the levers
  2. The other tries to crush the sea urchins as quickly as possible.
  3. Use a 15 second timer, who will crush the most sea urchins?!
  4. Bonus points can be earned if sea urchins are destroyed or lose an eye! XD

! HAVE FUN ! :)
