Introduction: UPCYCLE a T-SHIRT INTO a SUMMER TOP USING AN EXISTING TOP AS a MODEL

Hi! In this instructubles I´ll show you how to make a Top from an old T-shirt using a Top that you have at home (and fits you) as a model.

Supplies

Materials:

-And old T-shirt

-A big paper (to do the pattern)

Supplies:

-Sewing machine

-Iron

-Scissors

-Pencil and eraser

-Pins/ sewing pegs

-Bias maker (Depends on the top that you are making, but if you have to make bias, it´s so useful!)

Step 1: MAKING THE PATTERN

Making the pattern is very simple. You need a big sheet of paper and the top reference. I decided to do half and half because is more symmetrical if you use half pattern for both sides of the front and the other half in the back part. You can see it more clearly in the second image.

Step 2: CUTTING THE FABRIC

Once you have the pattern, draw it in your fabric and cut it!

Step 3: SEWING THE DOWN HEM

I recommend to sew this first. You have to bend 0,5cm two times so the corner of the fabric is hidden. Then you hold it with the pins and sew it with the sewing machine. I used the simple straight line for this.

Step 4: MAKING THE BIAS

Making the bias with the bias maker is more simple. You have to cut the fabric x2 of the final widt. That means that if you are going to do a 12mm bias, you must cut a 24mm widt fabric.

In my case, the fabric was very flexible and difficult to iron properly with the bias maker. So I decided to sew it before and it curled less. Then I introduced in the bias maker and iron it as you can see in the photos. You can also buy the bias made but if your fabric is different and you want to use it in the bias, is interesting to have this little gadget.

Step 5: SEWING THE BIAS

To sew the bias you can tie it up with pins or sewing it with red thread. Initially I tied it up with pins but this fabric curls a lot so I sew it with red Thread.

The bias is also sewed with a simple and straight sewing pattern.

I recommend to sew first the top bias and then the sides bias.

Step 6: SEWING THE FRONT AND BACK PARTS. SEWING THE BRACES

Once the front and the back parts are finished, it´s time to sew them! You can put pins so it does´t move. In this case, I used the S1 C sewing pattern of my sewing machine (see in the picture)

Once you have sewn both parts, it´s time to sew the braces. Then, I recommend to try on the top so you can see if is something strange. Probably no, because you used your own reference top!

Step 7: FINAL RESULT

Here we have the final result! As you can see in the second photo, The result is very similar to the original one.

Also, you can use this technique with all the clothes that you can imagine! Pants, shirts, skirts...

If you make it, I would love to see what you create. Surely it´s amazing!!
