Intro: Umbrella Wasp Removal.

Umbrella wasp or paper wasp build their nest from plant cellulose by chewing on it to make paper mache like materials. Wasp are consider beneficial insect but may pose considerable risk when they build their nest to close to sensitive areas such as playgrounds or high pedestrian traffic areas.

This Instructable is only one method of removing unwanted nest by using a least environmentally impactful method.

STEP 1: Materials:

De-webbing tool.

Squeeze bottle, spray bottle or a bucket.

Detergent water or insecticidal soap.

STEP 2: Soap Up Webber

Using the soapy water saturate the head of your de-webbing tool.

STEP 3: Foam

Saturate the de-webbing tool until it creates a thick foam and coats the entire head of the webbing tool.

STEP 4: Make Contact.

Press and hold saturated de-webbing tool onto hanging umbrella nest. Hold for 45sec to a minute.

STEP 5: Results.

The soapy water needs to smother the wasp in order to keep them from flying away. The soapy water inhibits flight and will suffocate some wasp. The nest can be knocked down at this point and removed.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE!
Your actions should be done EARLY in the morning, when the wasps are inactive due to the cooler temps. If you goof you'll have far less chance of being swarmed.

Wasps are never inactive. They might be less active in the cooler morning temps but are still able to fly and sting.

True. Less active. If I can, first thing, is fog them with a CO2 fire extinguisher. Makes them so slow, you can remove the nests by hand quite often. Then I spray the area with CRC. It's biodegradable and seems to discourage reinfesting.
