Vacuum Digging

Intro: Vacuum Digging

Lazy digging in the garden

STEP 1: Making Holes

I had some plants to get into the earth, and as the soil was very dry, the dirt kept falling back, and the hole was widening all the time.

So I decided to limit the width by inserting an old mason bucket with the bottom removed and excavate from inside with my shop vac.

STEP 2: Obstacles

The first holes was made fast and easy, but of course you will find roots and stones somewhere.

STEP 3: Support the Vac

Some old bricks had to be removed here, and ordinary garden tools made quick work as the vac removed all free dirt.

STEP 4: Empty the Separator

My homemade separator has limited capacity, so I had to empty it after each hole.

Digging is hard work, but this way it is much easier.

I love this idea. I used my shop vac directly a month ago like this. Here in N Phoenix the soil is dry and claylike. After digging normally with alot of effort and soil falling back in, I tried this method. I used a 2" and 3" auger bit and power drill to loosen the areas, then shop-vac. Worked perfectly!!!!
As the one who does the digging in our garden, I LOVE this idea.
