Introduction: Vehicle Oil Change

Hello, my name is Traver Hansmann. I have been changing oil in vehicles for four years now, ever since I was able to drive. I have been helping people service there own vehicles. Servicing your own vehicle is easy and fun, also will save money. Today I will be showing you how to do an oil change. Knowing how to change your own oil will save money on having to take it somewhere and paying somebody else.

Step 1: Gather Supplies

For step one you will need to gather the supplies, you will need, the correct amount of oil, new oil filter, correct size socket, ratchet, drain pan, oil filter wrench, and a funnel.

Step 2: Locate Oil Drain Plug

For step two you will need to locate your oil pan drain plug, you do not want to just start taking random bolts out of things or start draining thing you don’t know what they are for.

Step 3: Drain Oil

After you locate the drain plug, take the drain plug out and drain the oil, you will want to make sure the drain pan is located in a good spot, so oil doesn't drain all over the floor.

Step 4: Locate Oil Filter

Vehicles oil filters are all located in different spots and locations. Mine in located in the front of the motor.

Step 5: Removing and Replacing Oil Filter

Once you have located the oil filter, you will want to position your drain pan under where the oil filter is located, a little bit of oil will drain out once its taken off. Use your oil filter wrench to take off the old oil filter. Before putting the new filter on you will want to take some of the old or new oil and place a little oil around seal and threads of the new filter, then thread new filter on, also only hand tighten the filter back on.

Step 6: Replacing Oil Drain Plug

Once all the oil has drained out of you oil pan and you have replace your filter, put the drain plug back in the same spot you took it out of. You don't want to torque the plug down or use an impact to put back the plug and you won't want to over tighten it because it will be very challenging to get back off next time.

Step 7: Locate Oil Fill Cap and Putting Oil Back Into Vehicle

After you have drained the old oil, put back the drain plug, and replaced the filter. Locate your oil fill cap, should be located somewhere on the top of the motor. Take off the cap and place the funnel to where the oil will go into the motor and not spill everywhere. Then dump the new oil into the funnel. Don't put too much oil in but make sure you put enough back in. If you don't know how much to put in ask an auto parts store or a dealership, sometime it will say somewhere on the vehicle.

Step 8: Disposing of Old Oil and Cleaning Mess

Once you have successfully changed the oil in your vehicle, you will have to dispose your old oil, and clean up any messes that were made. To dispose the old oil you can dump it back into the old oil jug and take it to any auto parts store and they will dispose it properly. You can take the old oil filter and just throw it away.
