Symptoms of fault

If you have already had a break-in attempt made on your van then it is likely you will have a hole drilled in the door of your vehicle, this is done to allow criminals to reach inside and simply unlock your van from the internal mechanism.

The problem

The OEM door locking mechanism is easily bypassed by criminals.

It is very common for criminals to attempt break-ins on these vans by drilling a hole through the side door to access the internal mechanisms of the lock and open the door, thus being able to take whatever is stored in the back of the van. If your van has been broken into you would be required to replace the whole door, which can often prove expensive and time consuming, especially if you need to respray the new door.

A common deterrent against criminals would be an alarm system, however the alarm will only be triggered once the criminals are already inside of the van. Having a visible guard on show will send a message to any prospecting criminals.

Our solution

This X8R kit contains everything you need to repair a past break-in, as well as protect it from future attacks.

Rather than replace your door or install an expensive alarm system, install the X8R Door Lock Shield Kit. Our kit is also suitable if your van has been previously drilled in to. 

Our external and internal shields are both made from 2.5mm stainless steel. Adding 5mm stainless steel protection, the skin of most OEM doors is little over 1mm thick! 

Our shields come with a closed cell foam gasket which sits flush between the door & the exterior shield, creating a water-tight protective barrier to prevent rust and corrosion.

Supplies

For this installation you will need the following:

  • Small drill - used for drilling pilot holes.
  • 7mm drill bit - used for opening up the pilot holes.
  • 10mm spanner or socket - for installing the guard.
  • Electric drill - for cutting holes in the panel.
  • Center punch - for marking the holes out.
  • Rule - for measuring the position of the template.
  • Masking tape - for securing template to door.
  • Touch-up or paint pen - for rust-proofing the door.
  • Wax oil - for rust-proofing the door.

Step 1: Place the Template

Using a tape measure, measure 335mm up, from the swage line (the crease in the door at the top of the plastic trim) and make a mark using masking tape or a dry-wipe pen.

Dab grease around the area and offer up the bottom of the template to the mark you made in the previous step, you should see that the curve of the door fits with the curve on the template. Once you are happy with the position, use some masking tape to fix the template in position. Check the inside of the door skin to ensure drilling in these locations will not damage any interior components.

Step 2: Use a Center Punch to Mark the Drill Points

Using a center punch, align the tip to the exact center of the points marked on the template, and give it a good knock to leave an indentation in the metal surface. If you do not have a center punch you can use an old screwdriver bit and a hammer to knock in an indent.

Step 3: Drill the Holes

Using a 3mm drill bit, drill pilot holes on each center punch mark that you have made.

Now that you have drilled the first pilot holes, you can open them up to 9mm to allow the studs on the guard to pass through.

Step 4: Remove the Template

Remove the template and offer up the guard to the door. Check that the guard fits snuggly in the drilled holes.

Step 5: Protect Against Rust

Use a paint pen or touch-up kit and go over all of the drilled holes. This will prevent rust. If your vehicle has been broken into and has a hole drilled by thieves, ensure that this has also been touched up. Take a good quality wax oil and spray over the holes, this adds another layer of protection against rust.

Step 6: Install the Door Guard

Place the foam gasket over the door guard and install it into the drilled holes.

Step 7: Fit Outer Washers and Nuts

Fit 4 of the stainless steel washers over the outer-most studs, following by hand tightening the Nyloc nuts over the top.

Step 8: Remove the Locking Mechanism

Using a 10mm spanner or rachet remove the three bolts holding on the locking mechanism and slide the lock out of the way of the studs.

Step 9: Install the Interior Guard

Rotate the interior guard counterclockwise and fit in the inside of the door frame, sliding it over the studs from the exterior guard.

Step 10: Fit the Remaining Washers and Nuts

Fit the remaining 9 washers and Nyloc nuts over the top of the studs on the inside of the door. At first tighten the Nyloc nuts by hand, then use a 10mm spanner to tighten them until you feel slight resistence. Do not over tighten the nuts as this could cause the studs to snap. Do the same to the outer nuts. The gasket should sit flush between the guard and the door.

Step 11: Refit the Locking Mechanism

Move the locking mechanism back into place and tighten the nuts using a 10mm spanner.
