Introduction: Voodoo Heart | Pulsating Glow Quartz Necklace
Living in Lousiana, I am very interested in the voodoo culture. This necklace is an inspiration of it. Voodoo Heart slowly glows with a purple light... Its magical attribute you may ask ? Turns heads everywhere you go and sparks a conversation ;)
Step 1: Materials & Tools
- Quartz
- Leather & Suede Lace Cord
- Fairy Berry LED (or any other mini led)
- Silver Beads & Little Skulls Beads
- Mod Podge
- Fabric Flexible Glue & Super Glue
- Thread & needle
- Scissors (rotary & normal)
- Ruler
You can use any kind of semi-precious stone instead of the quartz, just make sure it's transparent enough for the LED to lighten it up. I've chosen black leather and lace but you can play around with different colors as well as different beads :)
Step 2: Choose Your Quartz & Repair Edges
Choose a quartz with a nice shape and good transparency. Be sure it is big enough on top to be able to install the Fairy Berry LED.
Now that you have found your best quartz for the project, repair sharp edges by adding Mod Podge.
Step 3: Leather LED Container
Cut a first piece of leather long enough to wrap your quartz 2 or 3 times and a second one that will serve as a cover flap.
I like to keep the rough cut of the leather untouched to add a bit of wilderness to the pendant.
Use the flexible fabric glue to secure wrap your quartz once with the first piece of leather, keeping the rough edges to the bottom and leaving enough space atop to add the LED.
Glue the second piece on the first wrap to make the cover flap.
Step 4: Suede Lace Cord & Skull Beads
Take 2 long pieces of suede lace cord, measure the top of your head to your belly for the length of each lace. Add the skull beads a bit above the end of the laces and glue them in place.
Glue the laces to the first layer of the wrapping leather on each side of the pendant.
Step 5: LED Fitting
Take your Fairy Berry LED and make sure it does fit on top of the quartz.
Optional : Add leather sides flap so you can't see the LED from the sides.
Step 6: Velcro Closing
Glue one side of velcro on the flap and the other (soft) side to the pendant.
Step 7: Decorating Beads
Use more skulls beads or any other charms to embellish your Pendant.
On the top left image is another example of the glowing pendant ;)

Hmmmm, now I'll have to sort through all my quartz crystals. There's a crystal mine not far from here, the tailings piles are open to the public. I've found some beautiful crystals.
Does anyone know how to cut quartz crystals? Most of my large ones have a chunk of quartz attached to one end, or are part of a cluster.

I think any tile cutting blade should work. Or you could use a file for ceramics if you do not have a tile saw. Just a lot slower. Just guessing though

Wow lucky you !!!!! I would spend my days in that mine !!! As it is said that quartz crystals in big quantity could open a quantum door !!! Anything strange ever happened around there ??? XD

Evidently I don't have enough yet for a quantum door. Hmmm, maybe I'd better go back in the spring! =)

diamond drill bits... LOTS OF THEM!!!!!! XD I'm a jewelry designer so just be forewarned that they're costly for top notch quality.

That thing looks amazing! Totally up my street :D And I have several bits of quartz, too! Do you have a link to the LED module?

Very cool. I wonder if it could be made to match your actual heartbeat somehow.

That would be neat, I agree ! It could be connected with Bluetooth with a Fuel band or Fit smart watch...

didn't get the idea why it pulsates in the first place? Does it have some microcontroller or so?
Reply 9 years ago
It's only the LED light you can find in the Fairy Berries decoration lights... There must be a micro controller on the mini card but I am honestly no expert in electronics sadly...

soooo cool! I have never used "dimensional magic" Modge Podge.
Looks very eclectic.
