Introduction: WALNUT JEWELRY BOX
I made this cute jewelry box with a big walnut.
If you like it vote it in the contests, thank you!
Step 1: WHAT YOU NEED
MATERIAL:
-a big walnut;
-scrap thin cotton fabric;
-piece of satin ribbon.
TOOLS:
-pliers;
-scissors;
-brush;
-wood glue;
-knife;
-rotary tool (or drill with small drill bit).
Step 2: CUT THE WALNUT
Cut the walnut in half with the jewelry saw.
Step 3: CLEAN IT
Clean the inside of the walnut with a knife or something.
Step 4: PUT THE FABRIC
Cut a round piece of thin cotton fabric, brush it full of wood glue.
Place the fabric in the walnut and press it really well.
Cut out the excess fabric.
Step 5: MAKE HOLES
Make four holes on the back and two in the front, like in the photos.
Step 6: MAKE a SPRING
Make a spring with the copper wire, with both the edge long (as in the photo).
You should use the measurement of your holes to make the hinge right for you walnut box.
Step 7: COMPLETE THE HINGE
Place another piece of copper inside of the spring, than fold both the edges at 90° (see photos).
Step 8: BENT THE HINGE
Bent all the edges of the hinge at 90° again (see photos).
Step 9: PLACE THE HINGE
Place the hinge on one side, clip close the copper wire in the inside of the walnut.
Place and close the other side too.
Make sure it open and close well.
NOTE: thinking back, I will suggest to place the hinge before you place the fabric!
Step 10: RIBBON
Now you just need to place a ribbon to close it.
I used a silk satin ribbon.
Make a knot on one end of the ribbon and insert in the front hole, do it to the other hole too.
Close it with a bow.
NOTE: thinking back, I will suggest to place the hinge before you place the fabric!
Step 11: FILL IT UP
Fill it up with jewelry and close it!

I love it! I have black walnut trees everywhere, I have to start saving the biggest ones for these. Thanks so much, I am always making jewelry a box for it will be a fun addition!

Very nice! I've tried cutting walnuts and found it didn't work very neatly. I found the best way was to use a pointy kitchen knife (sharp isn't important). Stick the knife in the hinge end and twist gently. If the nuts are fresh, most will open neatly. Conversely, if the nuts are old, most will fail.

This is very cute. I am thinking I would make a clasp with a loop and button/bead instead of a ribbon tie... I have granddaughters who would love one of these!
