Intro: WRX Trunk Rebuild - $24

So, I had some water damage in my trunk and for the longest time thought it was the wing on my trunk leaking.  Turns out I had 1" of water in the wheel well.  Finally decided to fix the problem.  This is being done on my 2004 Subaru WRX.

Things to do before: Make sure you locate the source of the water.  In my case it was water under the carpet.  However your issue maybe bigger than this.

Tools:
-Paper Towels
-Heater (to ensure all cracks are dried)
-Marker
-Scissors
-Jig Saw

Materials:
- 4' x 4' x 1/4" plywood - $12
- 4' x 6' Carpet - $12
(All from Lowe's)

STEP 1: CLEAN

Once the leak/ problem is solved its time to clean.  Mine had 1" of water in the wheel well and I don't know how it got there.  I also had the smell of mildew throughout the entire trunk.

STEP 2: Cut Out the Board

The board the car came with is like a compressed cardboard sheet.  So I decided to upgrade since it was thoroughly soaked and smelled of mildew. 

STEP 3: Make the Carpet

Simple process same as the last step, just trace and cut out.

STEP 4: Assemble

This is the final product.  Although only $24, it in my opinion looks very professional.  It sure beats the retail price of a new trunk liner.

I’m looking to do the same for my subie but I bought it without a liner or any type of cardboard; it’s just the wheel well. I would like to do the hard wood floor but I don’t know where to start with sizing. Do you know the precise measurements or maybe of a template that does? Kinda of stuck here, haha, thanks.

I bet that plywood weighs way more than the compressed cardboard that the factory had there. When my taillights leaked, I just removed all of the carpet back there, and tossed it. I'm going to put truck bedliner back there just because it'll seal it, and it's functional.

Not a bad idea to use bedliner in the trunk.

 That a lot stronger than the original as well but did you find/fix the leak ?

Yeah, I'd been looking for weeks and it was all from before I bought the car.
