Small Walkie Talkies are useful when kayaking for communicating between boats.

This Instructable shows how to make small walkie talkies water proof and able to float. It came about after trying to keep one dry by placing it in a zip lock bag and finding the bag damaged easily and let water in.

It was also tested using it underwater: Listening worked well a couple of feet under water, speaking was pretty garbled.

Supplies

2 small 500 mw Walkie Talkies

Packing Foam

Vacuum food Sealer

Step 1: Cut Out a Bit of Foam

Cut out a piece of foam .

Lay a walkie talkie on top of the foam and draw out its outline

Cut away the foam with a craft knife so the walkie talkie will fit into it, with the press to talk button (PTT) on the outside.

Step 2: Secure With Masking Tape

Wrap around some making tape to secure the walkie talkie and foam together.

Step 3: Suck Out Most of the Air With a Food Vacuum Machine

Place the foam and walkie talkie into a food vacuum bag, trim to size and use a food vacuum machine to vacuum out most of the air, but not all. (If you vacuum out too much air the buttons may be unintentionally pressed in) - the volume is also lowered.

Seal the bag using the machine.

Cut away excess plastic from the edges and you are good to go.

To replace batteries: cut open the bag, replace batteries, place in a new bag and reseal.

Just sealing a walkie talkie, also made it waterproof and just able to float.
