STEP 1: Gather Your Supplies

You will need:

*1 Can of Sweetened Condensed Milk (NOT EVAPORATED)
*1 Large Pan. The pan must allow the water to cover the can with out boiling over at a hard boil.
*1 Egg Timer/Alarm/Reminder System (Something so you don't forget about it)
*1 Washcloth or Small Towel
*A Stove top/Range
*Tongs (The longer the better)
*Can Opener
*3 Hours of spare time :)

*Place washcloth in the bottom of the pan.

STEP 3: BOIL

1. Turn on your burner to the highest setting and boil the water, washcloth, and milk. Turn on the Range Hood Vent Fan.

2. As soon as the water is boiling, set your timer for 15 minutes.

3. Go do something, NOT TOO FAR AWAY. If you stand there and watch it it'll feel like forever. If you get to far away you may not know if your smoke detector is going off.

4. After you timer goes off, check your water level.

4a. If its below the halfway point on the can, reduce your heat, add HOT water to original water level, repeat steps 2-3.
4b. If it's still above the can or only slightly below the top of the can, add HOT water to the original water level, set your timer for 30 min, then repeat steps 2-4 with your new 30 Min time limit.

STEP 4: After 3 Hours

After 3 Hours of repeating the previous step.

Move the pan to an unused, switched off, Burner. (you may need hot pads)

Using the tongs... Set your can of, now, caramel to the side and let cool. Use a hot pad or wet newspaper to protect counter tops.

(Optional Step: After 15-20 min of counter top cooling, place in refrigerator [NOT FREEZER], )

After about 1-2 hours of refrigerated cooling, or 2-4 hours of counter top cooling you may open the can CAREFULLY. and scoop out into small reusable container.

Cover and Refrigerate. (Carmel will not usually harden, but if it does heat in microwave for 15-30 seconds to soften.)

any ideas (anyone) how to make caramel flavoured milk ***its my fave***
WHy is there a strange black line on the can that is in the pot?
lol that was my attempt at un branding everything. but after viewing some other instructables I realized it wasn't a big issue... :)
I see... And great instructable! My mom always use the boiling can method when she want caramel.
Looks yummy and easy... What is the wash cloth for???
to protect my wifes pot, and to keep the can from creating a mini vacume between it and the pan. enjoy
I love this stuff, been making it for years. Really, it's dulce de leche but when you try explaining it to people, it's easier to just say it is caramel. This stuff can also be done in a pot next to the fire while camping. It goes great with s'mores.
wow I had no idea the real name, thanks for the info. ENJOY
I have never bovered with a cloth or removing the label, just chuck it in water, boil it, turn off the heat then just leave it in the pan overnight
the cloth protects my wife's pots and the label is messy at the end when it comes off on it's own.
