Hello, In the this project, I will paint Russian KV1 rc tank 1/16 scale from Heng Long. It’s a second hand tank with metal running gear, drive sprocket, and track. The colors of the tank, not really good, and not correct, and also missing some parts. So I did change the looks of the tank, to make it look better. This Russian KV1 is dark green (Tamiya TS- 2). This time it will be simple to spray use only 2 colors and I also make tow cable and rusted chain. It’s fun and looks realistic to the scale model. The step is simple and basic and easy to do. The result looks great. Let’s begin.

Supplies that you need to do This Russian KV1’s project.

1. Heng Long This Russian KV1 rc tank (or other models)

2. Arcylic paints, (matt black, red brown, dark yellow), paint tray, water spray, and paint brushes different sizes.

3. Spray paints surface primer (red brown primer), (If you want to be correct in color, need to buy Tamiya’s spray color TS-2 dark green). Metal iron paint and use rust activator

4. Masking tape, baby oil, paper tower, sling cable 1.5 mm., some dental floss.

Step 1: The Basics

First, I use alcohol to clean of the grease and dust. Then I disassembly the Russian KV1 rc tank by unscrew at the bottom of the tank, it should be about 6 screws. I took the track off and the body with wheels (bottom part), then disconnected the wires ports. Next I spray paint the lower hull and road wheel and spray red- brown primer, when it dry, spray dark green (TS-2) to all area. Next is use the band saw to cut some plastic the track cover and use the heat gun to bend the plastic to make it look like in ww2, after it look right, now I spray the upper hull and turret with red- brown primer, when it dry, spray dark green (TS-2) to all area. Let it really dry. I paint the track with the red-brown, and dark yellow also.

Step 2: Weathering KV1

Then prepare the Russian KV1 for the look, next I use coin to scrape some of the edges around the tank. This will look like the paint is chip off and peel off in some area. Scrape from the turret, upper hull, lower hull, and all wheels. Then I apply metal iron paint at the areas, that I scrapped areas and some areas that I think the rust will appeared. Let it dry for a day. Then I apply liquid activator to the areas, and let it dry, maybe in the sun light. The rust will appear faster. I painted the decal, lettering on the turret and paint dark yellow to the nut that on the turret, that will look like the rusted areas. Next I assemble the tank, so that I can see what I should adjust to make it look better. For the exhaust pipe, air intake, radiator fan, and all the wheels (just like the oil is leaking from the wheel bearing). I paint black and apply the body oil to make it shine. I look around the tank and paint more to make it look realistic. It looks real and it run or can be a show piece as well.

Step 3: Rest Chain and Tow Cable

Then I make 2 tow cables that will hook to the front of the tank and the wire to connect at the other end. I use the sling cable 1.5 mm. and I tied with the dental floss. After that I paint it dark green and apply metal iron paint deluded with some water. Let it dry, then I apply the rust activator. Leave it overnight, it should rusted and hook the tow cables to the KV1 tank. When the tank finish, it looks good.
