Intro: Women's Shorts From Men's Jeans

I found these Men's Jeans in my Moms garage sale. I thought I could make a pair of high waisted shorts out of them. I am a lazy seamstress, please be kind!

They were way too big so this is a complete makeover.

STEP 1: Cut Off Legs

First decide what length you want them. Then cut off the legs. Be SURE of the length!

Save the legs. Make a skirt from them later.

STEP 2: Cut Sides

Since these are so big we have to take them in. Start by cutting along the side seams right through the waistband.

STEP 3: Trace a Pattern

Then, the hard part. You will need a pattern for your new shorts so take a pair that fits nicely and turn them inside out. Lay them together lining up the crotch seams. Pin together. Chalk a line adding a half inch seam allowance.

STEP 4: Cut Out

Cut on the chalk line. I only cut the back so I had enough cloth left on the front for adjustments.

Pin right sides together.

STEP 5: Sew

Sew up the side seams. Use a large basting stitch so you can check for size. This makes it easier to remove the stitching if you need to.

STEP 6: Check Fit

Adjust if needed. If not resew over your basted seams with a standard stitch length.

STEP 7: Finishing Details

Hem if you want.. You could also fray edges.

I liked the back pockets wrapped around for a unique look. You could remove them or resize them if you like.

STEP 8: Finished!

I love my new shorts!

not sure what look you are going for, but I'm sure if you were able to lower the waist 3-4 inches, the proportions would be better. if the back pockets get reduced, would that damage the jeans beyond use.

Well, I was going for a high waist so I like the proportions. Yes, the jeans would show that the pockets were reduced. Some people like that look as well. Just personal preference.
