Introduction: Wooden Bird Door Knocker

Hi Everyone,

I'm excited to share with you today a step-by-step guide on how to create this beautiful wooden bird door knocker using scrap plywood. This project is perfect for adding a touch of charm to any home, and it's a great way to use up any leftover wood you may have lying around. Without further ado, let's get started! Please feel free to share any suggestions or feedback you may have along the way.

Supplies

  • 19mm Plywood
  • 6mm wood flat stick
  • Jigsaw
  • Drilling machine - with 8mm, 6mm and 1mm drill bit
  • 60/150/220 grit sandpaper
  • Superglue
  • wood filler
  • 1mm GI wire
  • 2 beads
  • Pencil, eraser
  • Acrylic paint and brush
  • Double Side pate
  • Googly eyes

Step 1: Cutting- Body and Base

  • I hand-drew it, but you can print the template on an A4 sheet
  • Draw the outlines on a 19 mm plywood
  • Using Jigsaw, cut the bird's body and the base plate
  • Using 60-grit sandpaper, make the body smooth and remove sharp corners of the base plate
  • Using 150 grit sandpaper, sand the surface smooth

Step 2: Cutting- Wings and Head Feather

  • You can use the template and draw the outlines on a 6mm wooden stick
  • Cut the wings and head feather as shown
  • Use sandpaper to get the correct shape and smoothen the pieces

Step 3: Drilling Holes

  • Base
  • Drill 6mm hole and 1 mm holes as per template
  • Using a drilling machine carve a slot at the back of the plate, as shown
  • Use sandpaper to smoothen it
  • Birds
  • Drill an 8 mm hole for the beak
  • 6 MM hole for thread
  • 2 x 1mm hole for hinge as shown

Step 4: Hinge

  • The hinge is made using 2 pieces of 1mm GI wire
  • One piece is simply in a C shape that goes into the base plate
  • the other price is just twisted around the first piece

Step 5: Painting

  • Using wood filler, fill the unwanted gaps and holes
  • Let it dry and then sand all parts using 150-grit sandpaper
  • I used light brown acrylic paint for the body and dark brown for the wings and head feather
  • The base plate is painted using dark wood polish
  • Let this dry for a few hours apply vanish if needed

Step 6: Assemble

  • Using superglue stick the wings and head feather on the bird's body
  • Attach a string to the body, through the hole in the base plate
  • Connect two beads to the string
  • The first bead is connected so that the bird is slightly leaning due to gravity
  • The second bead is at the end of the thread

PS:

  • The string can be of any material but should not be elastic

Step 7: Installing

  • To install, apply doubleside-tape at the back of the base
  • Clean the surface of the door
  • Ans stick the base on it as shown
  • Test it

Hope you are inspired to make one.. Please share your suggestions and feedback

For people with 3d printers, I will soon publish STL files for this..
