Introduction: Wooden Golf Putter
What could I do to combine my love of golf with my love of wood? Why make wooden golf clubs of course! This instructable shows you a quick and easy way to make the most important thing in every golfer's bag, the putter.
Step 1: Getting the Supplies Together
You don't need a whole lot to make a club, it just depends on how good you want the club to look, and how effective it is. For this putter I used an old pool cue (or any other cylindrical wooden object, like a dowel), a block of wood (which you'll shape later), wood glue, varnish (I used a clear coat but feel free to use any color, its your preference), and your standard everyday power tools. It shouldn't take long; the quick step of getting the supplies together might even take longer than the process itself.
Step 2: Cutting the Wood
In this step I simply cut the pool cue to the length I felt comfortable with, and cut the block of wood into a rough version of what the putter head will look like.
Step 3: Drilling the Holes
This picture shows the practice holes I drilled in the other half of the wooden block, but feel free to drill your hole the first time. Make sure to drill the hole at a slight angle, because no putter is straight up and down. Or at least none I've ever used.
Step 4: Sand It Out
Once I finished drilling I sanded down all the rough edges, which was the bottom, the back, the front/face, and the sides. By the way those black lines were in the wooden block already; I kept them there for an aesthetic appeal.
Step 5: Attach the Head
Once I finished sanding I put wood glue in the drilled hole of the head and stuck the pool cue in. By the way, I didn't show it I put some electrical tape around the top for a grip, but its all about preference.
Step 6: Add the Coat
After finishing the attachment I varnished the whole club head.
Step 7: Let It Be
After varnishing I clamped it and let it dry for a couple hours.
Step 8: Finished
This is the finished product, and this picture shows the length of the wooden club versus my original putter.
