Introduction: Wooden Spoiler for 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander

We are making a wooden spoiler for a Mitsubishi Outlander, while this project is specifically for the 2007 Outlander the process can still be followed for other cars.

Supplies

  • Wood Plank 7 in x 70 in
  • Wood Panel 24 in x 18 in
  • 2 U-bolts 3/8" x 3-5/8" x 7"
  • 4 Nuts
  • 4 Wood Screws
  • Spray Paint
  • Drill
  • Saw Stop Table Saw
  • ShopBot CNC Machine

Step 1: Cutting and Sanding Main Board

  1. Take the wood plank and cut it down to fit over the car without much hangover. We cut it to 65 inches to match the car
  2. If required Trim the sides of the Board so it is not too wide, our piece was fine at 7 inches.
  3. Sand down the board and prep it for painting

Step 2: CNC Side Panels

  1. Create a design on your computer for a side panel for the wing
  2. Transfer it over to a CNC machine and cut out two panels, for each side.
  3. Sand down these as well to prep them for paint

Step 3: Painting

  1. Either set up a paint booth or layout paper outside
  2. Set down the pieces
  3. Apply coats of paint and let it dry
  4. Keep applying coats until the wood grain is not visible

Step 4: Assembling

  1. After the paint has dried mark out holes on the side panels and sides of the main plank for wood screws
  2. Drill pilot holes in those points to prep for assembly
  3. Align holes and drill wood screws in to connect the pieces

Step 5: Prep for Ubolts and Car Attachment

  1. find the middle of the board and draw a 48-inch line with 24 inches on each side of the midpoint
  2. drill a hole at both sides 21 inches from the mide
  3. drill another hole on both sides at 24 inches from the middle

Step 6: Attach to Car

  1. put UBolts under rails on both sides of the car facing up
  2. put the spoiler above the rails and insert the U bolts into the spoilers corresponding sockets
  3. use nuts to fasten the spoiler down against the rail and tighten them on the bolts
