Introduction: Wooden Toy Car

I bought this really cool wheel cuter and wanted to make a project with my kids.

Step 1: Things You Will Need

Piece of timber - I used 150 X 65 X 19 Pine

I used 100 X 100 12 ply for the wheels with a Diameter of 40mm

Dowel 6mm X 100 long

Glue

I used coloured pencils for effect

Handsaw

Sandpaper

Rasp

Drill press

Circle cutter

Step 2: Body

I drew the shape of an old style car on the timber could be any style/shape you like. Could be a truck bus tractor etc.

Using a handsaw I cut out the shape.

I roughed out the shape with a wood rasp and finished with sandpaper.

Started with 60grit then 90, 120 and finished with 180.

Step 3: Wheels

Securing the timber in a vice and using the circle cutter cut about half way through. Then turn the timber over and using the center hole cut rest of wheel out,

Repeat for all 4 wheels.

The wheels need to be sanded to get a smooth finish.

Step 4: Fitting Wheels to Car

I sat the wheel on the car to make they looked right height and length wise.

Once I was happy I drilled a 7mm hole through. The dowel is 6mm I used 7mm for clearance to make sure they turned nicely.

I cut the dowel to length @ 50mm and glued one end. After it dried I push it through, checked length was right and glued other end.

Step 5: Finishing

Before I fitted the wheels I coloured the body and added stripes. I used boiled linseed oil to the wheels as I love the look of the grain but they needed some form of protection.

I used our sticker maker for the numbers just to make it look neat.

Step 6:
