Shift register too slow for multiplexing?

Hi, I'm trying to figure out working with shift registers. I bought a couple of 74HCT4094's, hooked them up through my breadboard to a small matrix with some LEDs and my Arduino. Without multiplexing everything works fine, but no matter what circuit I build (changing wires, resistors, transistors, even the Arduino code), when I start to multiplex the LEDS clearly 'flicker' (is that the correct term?). Is it possible that some shift registers are 'too slow' for multiplexing with Arduino?

HELP....Flysky with arduino

Hello, Basically i am making a robot for a competition called "robowars". I want to control the robot with the transmitter i.e. the flysky transmitter, like if i want a rotating disc to cut someone, or a hammer, etc i will have to control it with the transmitter right and i want to use the arduino for this, for example, to change the speed of the disc or change the speed of thee robot itself.I want to read the stick values and assign them for different tasks. My robot is about 15 kg, so i need a high power battery to run it, . I guess i can use a BEC for this....i just need help in reading the stick values from the transmitter. Please help in the hardware and software. I am using an ARDUINO MEGA 2560. I am totally new to robotics and have no experience so please help. I need the code and the connections. Thanks in advance

I need help with an electrical schematic

I'm working on a project where you press a normally open button that lights an amber light (represents Master), this button then lights other buttons that are lit green (represents Slave). The accompanying schematic should be fairly clear and also repeats this question. What I want to have happen is when you press one Master, the corresponding Slaves light. Release it and the board goes dark. Then if you press one of the other buttons in the Slave category, it becomes the new Master and lights up other corresponding buttons. I'm sorry if it's confusing. The project is a flow chart of sub-subsystems that when completed link to a larger tab, then that tab links to another set of subsystems finally culminating to a final result.

Cannot connect to my home network unless a specific laptop is connected first

This is the strangest problem. My family has 3 laptops: a Samsung laptop (Windows 7), a HP Elitebook (Windows 8) and a Macbook pro.  All of a sudden, the HP and the Mac cannot connect to my home network unless the Samsung is connected first.  Once the Samsung connects (which it does automatically), both other devices will connect as well.  If the Samsung is turned off, I will receive an error message saying that the computer (HP or Mac) cannot connect to the internet--it will try troubleshooting (resetting the wireless adapter) but still will be unable to connect. If I turn off the Samsung, the other two laptops will stay connected, but if they are turned off, the Samsung has to be turned on and connected to the internet before they can connect.  I have spoken to the ISP provider and they cannot provide me with a solution. I have deleted and re-installed the home network on all 3 devices, but that hasn't solved the problem.  The computers are not set up on a HomeGroup.  One ISP technician told me to have all 3 computers on a Public network. (The Samsung automatically is set for Home Network.) The options for the HP windows 8 are Private or Public.  I have switched them all to Public and/or Home-Private, but that hasn't solved the problem.  (I don't understand why I should have my computers on a Public network if I am using my home ISP--I just moved to this town and am using a different internet provider--my previous ISP always said my computers should be on Home Network) I am not very computer literate but I have looked at the command prompt to see if the IPv Address was the issue. It appears to be correct--the only number that is different is the last one. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  If the Samsung laptop breaks or is taken out of the house--the other 2 computers won't ever connect! Thank you!

USB WiFi Antenna Mod

I am working on adding a helical antenna to a cheap USB WiFi adapter.  My question is where do I connect the antenna to existing circuit.  I've attached a closeup picture with three likely points.  My three main questions are: 1) Where to connect the external antenna 2) Do I disconnect the rest of the onboard antenna (my gut says yes) or just add in the new 3) What impedance will the external antenna need to match?  I assume the components between points C&B; and B&A; are for some kind of impedance matching.

Raspberry Pi (or similar) to control LED strip via commands etc?

I'm trying to achieve something which I would imagine isn't all that difficult. Basically, I would like something like a Raspberry Pi to connect to a set of LED strips.  Then via Bluetooth or WiFi I could send a command to turn them off or on from my phone. Thats it. I'd also like the same unit to power a little OLED or LCD screen that displays the time if possible. Does anyone know exactly what kit i'm going to need.  THere seems to be hundreds of different ways of doing this and I've got no idea where to start.

Teach me a bit about lasers

Im in the process of piecing together parts for a 2 axis CNC and I would like to use it for laser cutting/etching. Since I'm new to building CNCs and I also dont have a ton of extra money I plan to build one using a DVD-r laser (200mW?) and just do some tests to get the basics down and play around with it. I would love to be able to cut 1/4'' acrylic as I have some laying around and I love some of the projects possible with it. What is the cheapest laser that is capable of cutting clear 1/4" acrylic? I have used a 40W co2 laser and it flew through the acrylic like it was nothing. Is there something for <$200 that would cut it?  And is it something that you can just use a lower power and go super slow or do you need the power? I did some light searching and didnt really find what I was looking for but if someone has a link to some helpful info I would appreciate any help I can get. Otherwise ill just spend my days cutting and etching paper!

Getting copper out of cables the low-cost low-tech way

Hi all, I'm working on a project aimed at helping e-waste workers in Ghana. They collect cables and burn them to get the copper (see video 6min). Burning them is toxic and they damage their health. I'm looking for alternatives to this burning process. - First idea would be stripping cables. I will need a very basic tool, man-powered, to strip them. - Second idea would be shredding and sorting out. Probably something like this bike (http://www.halwatts.co.uk/Esource). I would like to do it open source hardware to facilitate replication. I'm looking for people who can help by giving tips on how to build a prototype, and maybe get more involved.  Do you know about tools that can serve this purpose of getting copper out the cables, low-cost, low-tech? Thanks

Motorcycle Shed Turntable

Im making a log cabin in my back garden, im short for space so its 16ft wide and 10ft deep.  I dont want to reverse the bike out of the shed each time so im going to make a turntable, id like it to be electric but I dont know how. Here are the engineering plans for the turntable, dont worry about how im getting the 50mm circle in the concrete, im doing that with a polythene plug. Im going to use the largest "Lazy Susan 24" to hold and turn the middle of the table, then im going to use min i fixed casters to keep the edges stable. Im an engineer so I can maipulate any metal on my lathe/mill etc.  Ive thought of 2 ways to use the winch to turn the table: 1- Bellow the table: exchanging the wire for a pulley system which will turn the lazy susan, im not eqactly sure how this will work. 2- Above the table, Very easy, exchange the wire for a rubber wheel that will turn the edge of the table. Question: If anyone can think of any better, easier ideas id love to hear from you? Regards ant... anthonyhague@gmail.com

Shop made bench power supply.

Hello I have an atx dual sata 550 watt power supply... I have seen a bunch of instructables on here that allow just a few different voltage selections.. I have also seen a few with potentiometers to allow it to be more adjustable (dial up or down the voltage). That is what i want, i dont want to be limited to just three different options. S my question to you is, what type of potentiometer do i need to buy for this? And will a regular autostore purchased dashboard voltage meter window work? Also, what type of fuse/or breaker should i use?. Do i even need one? I also head i need some kind of "switch" for this as well. I found circut diagrams, i found list of items needed, but most of the instructables ihave found arent very specific on the specs of these extra items needed... Any help or direction would greatly help. Im going out to radio shack today and would love to grab the items needed to finish this priject. Thanks all...

Lighting with RGB LEDs

Hi all. I am wanting to get into using led lighting for long exposure photos (for the purpose of thermal imaging) and I am looking at RGB LEDs for providing the colour. My question being, should I try finding LEDs that have similar light output in mcd or stick with RGB LEDs? The reason I am asking is when I am looking at specs, the green seems to be 2 to 4 times as bright. Is this an issue?  Also, the RGB LEDs seem to have a much wider viewing/ lighting angle.  I am not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you all very much for the time.  Professorred

Increasing DC voltage

I need to increase the voltage of a battery from ~30v to ~230v, the only way i can think of doing this is somehow pulsing the DC rapidly to create a sort of "pseudo AC" then using a standard transformer to increase the voltage, followed by the standard rectification process. My problem is how to pulse the DC (bearing in mind the pulse will probably need to be in the order of kHz, and the device being powered at 230v has a power rating of 400W) and how to after the rectification process implement a pwm system. In addition, the method of increasing the voltage strikes me as extremely inefficient, so if anyone has any other ideas I would be very great full. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Ideas for "Consuming" Outdated LEDs

Hello all! I have many of Cheap and Outdated LEDs (In thousands) lying around. These were purchased long time ago (2003~2005) when luxeon Stars were hardly available and costed Rs 1000 a piece. These LEDs are- 5mm 20 deg White ~100pc 4.8mm "Straw Hat" Low dome 100 deg White.~ Many 1)Both of them are rated at 20ma, 3.2 volts. 2) Straw hats are twice as better (Life, brightness, Even-ness) than low beam angle 5mm ones 3)I learnt the hard way using these in many precious projects. Now I know very well that 5mm LEDs dim considerably even at 20ma after a year intermittent use. I had made 36-LED matrixes (about 2 watts) with good spacing between LEDs, Legs uncut still went dim after a year. 4)There is a huge variation in Tint, Voltage and output of these. Straw hats are better , but still 5)These are not entirely Cheap in money per-se. Costed 3 Rs per piece. Today a reasonable spec Chinese 350ma Star costs 40 a piece. If we consider a bunch of 18 of these to make that wattage, They add up to Rs 55 6)Advices to throw them in the bin/ Donating/ smashing with bulldozers./ Overvoltage Fun etc are not my idea. 7)Don't want to spend tremendous time/energy/money than they're worth.

iPhone app For Making an Instructable

An idea I have is for an app, for iPhone or Android or both, which is used to make an Instructable. This would mean using the built-in phone camera to take the necessary photos, in order, for each step of the Instructable. Then the user would be able to add text, photo tags, and other things included in the Instructable-making process, without having to transfer their photos to a computer and upload them to Instructables. They would simply upload the finished product directly to the site. I would make this myself, but my knowledge of the required software is very basic. I might be able to do it, as long as I had some help, and information on the formatting used on this site i.e colors, logos, basic layout, etc

Attempting to create tiny, wearable, covert, simple button click counter for behavioral mod

Hi all, I've been searching both this forum and the internet in general and strangely have not come across what I'm looking to do even though to me it seems very simple. Here are the specifications/requirements of the device that I am trying to create: -extremely tiny form factor (ideally a ring sized device but I'll settle for a thin bracelet) -unobtrusive/inconspicuous (I guess a thin bracelet that could hide under a sleeve might be best) -battery powered/untethered (This is essential. The device would be useless if depended on a connection to a computer or wall socket) -battery life must last a full day -data logged is just a simple time/day stamp that would indicate when a button was clicked by the wearer      (wearer would manually click the button during the day when certain thoughts came up for him/her)       This requirement indicates that the micro controller chosen would need a clock built in and        some kind of storage - be able to upload the data to a computer I did my preliminary research considering these requirements and I came up with the following electronic components that might work: - teensy 3 (has real time clock and 2K EEPROM which should be plenty of memory for storing date stamps) - ulog (1MB of usable space across 3 analog channels, couldn't find anything about a built in clock) - Pro Micro - 3.3V/8MHz (not sure about built in real clock  but storage is 32K flash space) - OpenLog (wasn't clear about how much built in storage and didn't see any build in real time clock) These are the best I could find. If anyone has better suggestions please let me know? My idea is to connect a Mini Push Button Switch to one of the digital inputs on one these micro controllers/data loggers and write a simple sketch that records the time the button was pushed in a MMDDYYhhmm format (10 bytes per click). To power any of these micro controllers/data loggers I was planning to use a Coin Cell Battery - 12mm. I was going to sew the micro controllers/data loggers on one side of a thin piece of material that would serve as a bracelet and sew the battery on the other side. Although I'm not sure how to fix the battery to the cloth and how to connect it to the micro controllers/data loggers. I'm guessing I could find some kind of battery holder for the 12mm cell battery? Other Questions about my assumptions: Will I have enough storage left over on the flash space or EEPROM to store the data click after the sketch code has been loaded in? Will a watch battery provide enough energy to run this device all day? Is the Coin Cell Battery - 12mm the correct external power source for this project? I encourage any feed back, criticism, comments, help of any kind to move me along with this preparation so that I can move forward and purchase the parts I need. Thanks! Michael

Solar/Wind Forum for DIYers?

Does anyone know of a good DIY forum for solar/wind? I need a community to help with some real basic questions and this site while it is amazing has a low social to it. Looking for a group of solar/wind enthusiasts.

Nerf Dragonfire Drone

I have been thinking about a design for a nerf variation of the dragonfire drones from black ops 2. It would consist of two remote control helecopters of relatively large size, and some kind of firing mechanism mounted in between them. Any suggestions or input? I need ideas!

Youtube Ideas

I wanted to ask for some advice and feedback on my youtube channel as well as some new movie ideas. First off my Youtube Channel is very special to me and i think with the right work and attitude i cant get to to go farther: my youtube channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/Thelostrolo. Why the name Thelostrolo? well i created the channel when i was 11 (now nearly 15) and i thought i might as well keep the name! (I am working a big hunger games related project which will be uploaded to another channel) I am not sure if i should create a new channel. but that would mean starting from scratch and trying to get recognition again, but maybe you guys could help!? Anyway back to my idea: I had a phew ideas and of course ill need help as i cannot film on my own! The first idea is a simple idea called: 'The Confrontation" which is a simple action thriller type movie with gun movie effects and explosions! THe other on was: "Never look back"  a more serious film in which there is a kid who is bullied and one day is knocked out. He wakes up at home, but no-one was at home, so he decides to go out for a dog walk, he then comes across the bullies except they're afraid of him. etc etc and it ends with him finding out that he is not who he used to be! I could really do with some peoples feedback... not just because this took me a long time to type up! Also if you did check out my channel post your below and i might subscribe :D Thanks for the help Rowan Prosser- Rowans Movies - Thelostrolo RATE, COMMENT AND SUBCRIBE!

Local text only chat room for under 100$: This may be a little insane

I am looking to create a local text only chatroom as a gallery installation for a sculpture class. In the most basic terms I want 4 text output displays and 4 text inputs to be connected through a cheap computer allowing people to carry on a simple conversation locally. As this makes absolutely no sense and has no practical applications it is difficult to find similar projects. Oh and because it just seemed too easy to wire some laptops together I am trying to do this for around 100$  There are Three basic problems I need to solve: Output:  So far my best idea is to use a monochrome lcd such as this:  https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10168 and soup up/ replace the back-light and create and old school overhead projector.  Input: burner cell phone keyboards? cheap keyboards from goodwill? Alternatives?  Make them work together: some unholy union of breadboards arduino and raspberry pi So basically this is barely possible if at all, and I am amateur at best in the hardware department (although I have a CS degree in a couple months) Any help from the seasoned veterans of this community would be greatly appreciated. (and I mean anything like if you have a favorite cheap keyboard or lcd that would be an immense help)
