Problem with my variable regualted dc power supply.

I have a used variable voltage regulated power supply that does not work ; when i turn it on, the Volt meter tops, and if I switch to ammeter, it shows 0amp, if i plug a voltmeter on the female banana plugs there's no juice... I've checked the fuse, it is not damaged. i've also checked to potentiometer with my ohm-meter looks like it's working normally. I don't know what is wrong with it... Do anyone have any idea ?

Etching PCB boards

I know that copper is a better conductor than tin or aluminum. But one of my friends a few days ago told me that instead of etching his layout on copper, he used the bottom of an altoids tin. he said all he did was sand the bottom until there was no paint of the altoids can and then he etched his layout. (Chemical bath, toner, etc.) So my question is, Does anyone know how to etch custom layouts (toner layouts) on tin or aluminum? **I figure this could save people some money and time on some projects. :)

Power supply

Last time I tried to do my own homemade project I failed utterly, I think mostly because I had no idea what anything was (if you saw my last topic on a distortion petal, you know what I'm talking about). I decided instead to buy a book (Tab Electronics Guide to Understanding Electricity and Electronics by G. Randy Slone) which has projects in it, the first one being a power supply. I haven't started building it yet (waiting until I get back to the city) but I've started looking up parts. The thing is, I can't find a 4400-uF 50-WVdc capacitor anywhere! So my question is, can I just put two 2200-uF 50-WVdc capacitors in parallel to do the job of one of the 4400's? That isn't my only question, just the first which I'll ask later in this thread. Thank you (PS: Has anyone had a problem with using Chrome and entering text into these fields? I had to switch to Firefox to get it to work)

Sequential, multiple output relay circuit?

I am trying to make a sequential relay circuit on 12-14V DC (automotive power). I need a circuit that will toggle up or down four different ouputs each "latching" until triggered to move up or down the series. Only one relay can be on at a time. One momentary switch will control "up" and the other "down" with the positions holding until the next trigger impulse either way. I will be using the circuit to control paddle shifters on a transmission. Thanks in advance! Dave

New 'ibles

Decided it would be a good idea to offer both sides of the discussion to the lockpick group. I'm hoping (fingers crossed here) that the community is capable of handling this entire group intelligently and maturely. As such, I figure pros and hobbyists alike can benefit not only from the opening and bypassing methods, but from more information about what's being done to prevent such things. All the information here is for educational purposes, and it helps me in my line of work to see what non-commercial solutions there may be. Also, with the shared knowledge here, it's possible we can come up with even better security options. Afterall, part of the job is getting in, another big part is keeping others out. *In my own opinion, the best security option anyone has is to install a decent security system. That way, even when the physical locks fail (I refuse to believe there is a lock that cannot be picked or bypassed), there is still an added security. Besides that, even having the alarm company's sign in your yard/window really is enough to deter most would-be intruders* So, feel free to post methods for getting in, or keeping others out.

Regulating a Spark

I need to build a unit capable of supplying a timed spark. At approx 1 sec intervals. The unit will need to be small/cheap to build and be able to supply current as to generate a timed spark across two electrodes via 240v power supply. The unit I am attempting to build is a flammable gas warning/ignition device. The purpose of it is to ignite the first immediate gas detected, as to avoid a larger detination later. The unit will be made of machined aluminum. It will consist of a vapour detector hooked to a fan unit, which inturn vents the gas to the ignition device. Thus igniting the gas. At the moment I am working on the ignition system, hence the question. Thanks for any help.

I'm still using it sometimes, to help beta test it and all, but my heart belongs to another. So I downloaded FF the other day, and am installing addons like a madwoman. Greasemonkey (the comment rater script! No knex! No yarn!), themes, games, rss feeds-it's like a whole new dimension to the internet. It does run better in vista though-still slow on my XP machine. I should have listened to you earlier, skate!

Mosfet Question

Hey guys, I am doing the arduino controlled rgb leds (1 watt leds) project and I am going to use mosfets for the leds. I ordered 3 IRF540 mosfets, 1 for each color of leds (Red, Green, Blue). the arduino is going to use pwm to control the leds but the arduino can only supply 5V at 40mA max. The mosfet have gate-source voltage of +/- 20V and a gate-threshold voltage of 2.0V to 4.0V. Do i need a driver circuit between the arduino and the mosfets and if not is 5V sufficient to run the mosfets in pwm? If i do need a drive circuit, does someone have a schematic since i am inexperienced at electronics? Would i need a heatsinks for the mosfets? thankx for any insight...

Suggested Project/Instructable: Holo Display

Hello all, I had an idea a moment ago for a "holographic" display but I realise that I do not currently have the supplies necessary to complete it. It is actually a combination of a couple other peoples ideas to form a new concept. Someone on here, (open new tab>search) NK5, made an instructable on how to make a kind of hologram. Another cool frood, Johny Chung Lee, came up with and did some basic programming for a different kind of simulated hologram and a multitouch system. And lastly there was a group that made a pair of specialised LED gloves to go with the multitouch system. My thought was: make a reflection hologram and use the Wiimote multitouch system to make it interactive. Project the screen onto the floor or put a large screen tv on the floor (if you want to risk it. and place the glass over it at 45 like with NK5's idea. Put the wiimote at the base of the glass. (it would be simpler if it were behind the glass but I think glass disables IR cameras) Then put on the IR gloves and run it all together with a program that supports the multitouch. Once you got the hang of it it would be more or less a "Minority Report" type display. Well, that's it. I can't make this because I do not have a projector or a pane of glass anywhere near large enough. Nor do I have sufficient expandable cash to purchase such objects. Good luck.

Op-Amp Help

Hi- So, I made the circuit below to make sound-reactive blinky LEDs for a halloween costume (the round thing on the left is a condenser mic). I think I just got lucky that it worked, because I'm no genius when it comes to op-amp usage or design. Now I want to adapt it to control something else that needs a slightly higher voltage than the LEDs. Basically, I'd like the output to swing as high as V+ when the mic input is "loud" (a relative and possibly adjustable level). I've messed around with various resistor values as well as adding or removing resistors in places it seemed like it would help (according to the LM741 datasheet). All to no avail. Anyone out there who might know what to do? Again, I want the mic input to cause the output to go as hight as V+ (9V in this case) when it's loud, and be more or less at 0V when it's "quiet." Thanks in advance, _mykle

I need help about a laser cutter design.

OK,here is my plan. I thought of making a laser cutter using a printer and DVD drive laser. I plan on replacing the print head with the laser,or mod a black cartridge to activate a laser instead of squirting ink. The work will be moved by the mechanism that once moved the paper. However,I cannot seem to find the pinouts of a cartridge or at least a diagram of the insides of a cartridge. Needless to say,I need help about the project. Note:The project will probably be done a few years later. Another note:I do not have good image to put here,so I am putting a random pic from one of my instructables.

Aarrghghgh!!!!! Why does the universe hate me?!!?!?!?!?!?!??!?

I think the universe has something against me. On Sunday my computer's wireless card suddenly stopped working, and this was about a week after I fixed my touchscreen. So I took apart my laptop (again) and checked the connections and they were fine so I had no clue what it was. I tried connecting my computer to the server with a wire and for some reason my computer had a multiple server problem because my computer was not connected but others were. My dad did finally connect it but when he adjusted it a little, it disconnected and didn't re connect. Then, suddenly, on Tuesday after having my computer plugged into the server for a few hours, I unplugged it and moved it to my room and I noticed something, I was still connected to the internet, it was weird. So suddenly, for some reason, the wireless card came back on. Then on Thursday, my wireless card died again, so when I turned on my computer after school, it didn't connect to the internet. So now today, Friday, I plugged in my computer to the internet and it wouldn't work. At first I thought it was the multiple server problem again so I plugged in my computer directly to the server, and it didn't work. At this point I had to work hard to prevent myself from pulling my hair out in clumps because I was so frustrated. So after a while my dad came home and he couldn't connect to the internet either but it was because the plug I pulled out to connect my computer was the one that connected to his computer. So right after I pulled my plug out and put his in, literally a millisecond afterword, the yellow-green activity light started to light up and flash on the thing that accesses the internet. So I check with both of my mom and dad and both of their computers just got connection to the internet, one was a laptop, one was a desktop, this was the point at which I thought I did something to upset the universe. So now I am posting on the wire from my laptop. Any ideas on what is causing it, any? My computer is an hp tx1320 with vista home premium and please help me!!!! EDIT: it is fixed, sent it in to HP a long time ago, no need to bump this up so don't comment.

I need help setting up a 2Mhz oscillator circuit

So here's the backstory : Last night I was poking around in our shed looking for ..... when I came across a box of old electronics. Inside was a lot of old parts, from about the 1970's, a few 555's and 741's and a big 28 pin chip I didn't recognize. After plugging the numbers on the chip into google (AY-3-8500) I found out that it was freaking pong on a chip. Apparently my dad had bought it as a kit in the 70's but never got around to make it.So I took a look around the net for schematics and foundhttp://www.electronixandmore.com/project/pongman/http://www.datasheetarchive.com/pdf-datasheets/DataBooks/Book241-59.pdfHere's the problem, I don't have easy access to the 90uH inductor in the schematics or a 2Mhz crystal. So how can I create the 2Mhz I need to run the chip? It's the only thing between me and pong X(
