Natty Narwhal Help (Urgent)?

Tried to upgrade to Natty Narwhal last night, but it looked like it ruined my computer. Its an old laptop Dell Inspiron 86000. It seems to install fine, but when it boots the words are blurry to the point where it is unreadable and the desktop flickers constantly. The bar at the top doesn't even load. The icons jump around the screen. Its impossible to use. PLEASE HELP. I know this is more a thing for the Ubuntu forums, but I don't have an account yet. Also I booted with a Live version of Ubuntu 10.10 to try and recover my files, but it looks like I can't get at them because it is in a password protected folder. HELP.

Need advice for adding aux-in/line-in to Philips AE2160/00-A AM/MW/LW portable radio

Hey there, this is my first post! :) I'm from Germany, so please excuse my grammar! :D The reason why I'm opening up this new topic is, I didn't find any instructable or guide on how to add an aux-in/line-in to my simple mono AM/MW/LW radio Philips AE2160/00-A. There's not much to find out about the technical specifications besides the standard product information: Tuner • Analogue tuning • Wave ranges FM 87.5 - 108 MHz MW 525 - 1606.5 kHz /04 LW 150 -255 kHz /00c FM/MW /04 FM/MW/LW /05 FM/MW/LW • Ferroceptor for MW (and LW) • Telescopic aerial for FM (and SW) Amplifier • Max. output power 300 mW RMS • Tone control Music /News Sound system • Loud speaker 100 mm • Metal grill Power supply • External supply /00c, /04 230V /05 240V AC • Batteries 2 x 1.5V , type R20/D cell/UM1 Connections • Headphone socket 3.5mm General • Material Polystyrene, metal grill • Weight (g) 520 • Dimensions (mm) 210 W x 150H Here's a link to a photo of the device: http://images.philips.com/is/image/PhilipsConsumer/AE2160_00-_FP-global-001?wid=2000&hei;=2000&$jpglarge$ I didn't even find schematics/circuit diagrams for this or a similar device. There are lots of tutorials on how to add such an input to a car radio or a boombox/stereo cassette player a.s.o., but not for a simple AM/MW/LW radio. My questions are: 1.) Are there any similar hack projects here in the step-by-step or forum section? 2.) How do I find the right connector or place to solder a 2-way-switch between the sections (tuner, amp, speaker)? After the hacking job, it should be possible to switch between normal radio listening mode and aux-in/line-in mode from an external mp3 player, notebook, a.s.o.. 3.) Is there anything else to know for this project? Yesterday I've opened up the case for the first time and looked over the circuit board and the connections. I had no cam to take pictures, but I try to take some mobile phone cam pictures of the circuitry and parts at the next opportunity! Cheers, arok1

Arduino Code Modification Help (Change of Display Type Used)

This is my first post, so I hope I'm doing this correctly. For reference, I'm new to Arduino, and with no experience with code. I want to try and do a battery tester with an Uno, as seen here (http://denishennessy.com/2012/04/08/measuring-battery-capacity-with-an-arduino/). I'm trying to follow the instructions given, and use the code (https://github.com/dhennessy/BatteryCapacityTester/blob/master/BatteryTester/BatteryTester.ino) that the author has provided. However, due to lack of availability of parts, I don't have a temperature sensor, and instead of the 16x2 LCD screen, I have an Adafruit 1.8' TFT shield. So my query is, how can I modify the code such that it works on this type of display? Again, the code is from (https://github.com/dhennessy/BatteryCapacityTester/blob/master/BatteryTester/BatteryTester.ino), and I have not directly copied it in the post so that it is easier to read. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Using USB to control an LED display

Hey, this is my first post so bere with me as I may be a bit all over the place. I am trying to control an LED message board via usb.  It has a manual keyboard on the bottom that upon closer inspection has 8 wires on one side and 7 on the other. By placing a wire between a wire on one side and a wire on the other a character is inputed. So by using some sort of USB interface with at least 15 pins I think it must be possible to input to it via USB. e.g. When A is pressed wires 8 and 15 should be connected in order to input A, for B wires 8 and 14 should be connected, ect..... I am also getting my Rasberry Pi sonn and was thinking that the GPIO pins could do this but i'm not sure. This website documents a similar project using the same display but via a different method: http://srimech.blogspot.co.uk/2003/04/led-message-board-hacking.html Thanks for reading, please help!!!!

What to do with a bricked all-in-one pc?

I have a bricked Dell Studio 19 All-In-One PC, and wanted to know if I could use it for something. It was bricked by a failed BIOS update. There was a program from dell which came installed and updated any other of their software and drivers on the computer. Only after the failed update I found out that updating the BIOS is really unnecessary. The only fix I know for the motherboard is replacing it, and the only place I found out that refurbishes them are from a company in the US, and it's not cheap at all. (I used to live in the US, and moved to Brazil later) Well anyway, I wanted to know if I can use the computer for something else, like use the monitor for a different computer and use its bluetooth mouse and keyboard on a different computer too. I think the only thing really useful in it is the processor which is already old (Intel E7500 and a 320GB HDD). http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/studio-one-19/pd http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/studio-one-19/diagnose Thanks for the help!

adding aux line in directly to boombox ampli

Hi guys i am Ramanta from Indonesia i have an old boombox, Sony CFS-1110s (similar mechanism with CFS-1100s) what i want to do is add an aux input to them. I have seen a lot of instrucrables about it, but nothing about this model. I find a similar unit here https://cocodrilabs.wordpress.com/2012/04/05/installing-an-auxiliary-input-on-a-stereo/ the aux in is conected directly to the IC Amps pin. I have the IC diagram, what i dont understand is this model have a dual IC8207k. One for each channel. TA8207K is a stereo IC, so how do i do the wiring? For single IC its just INPUT1-INPUT2-GND. In dual setting they have 4 input and 2 ground. I dont want to use any tape adapter since its sound terrible here i attach the complete diagram and schematic in PDF please give some tutorial, im a beginner in this kind of thing) hehe my email zramanta@gmail.com sorry for the bad english :D

How do I create a 5 second soft-start with an LM334Z current regulator?

Hey all, A bit of a newbie to creating circuits I have a 12V battery regulated to 2mA with an LM334Z current regulator. Here are the docs for the current regulator: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm134.pdf I would like to create a soft start, so that when I turn the device on there is not a rush of current.  I’d like it to ramp up over 5 seconds. I’ve breadboarded a few schematics I found online but I can’t get them working. Even if the battery power is slowly ramped up, the LM334 rams the voltage to get the current at exactly 2mA. (my Rset w/ a 33ohm resistor) Here’s a couple I’ve tried unsuccessfully. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5822/softstart1.gif (might be b/c the 317 is different?) I even tried this schematic to no avail: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5822/Screen%20Shot%202012-04-29%20at%209.16.57%20AM.png But I was using different transistors, didn’t think that mattered- let me know if it does Can anyone help me figure this out? I’ve been stumped for days. Starting to pull my hair out :) Thanks Nick

Treadmill Motor Control

I have a Horizon T101-04 treadmill that has a control problem. The motor is definitely good. I suspect that the motor control board is good, and the control panel board is bad. The control will not reset or go into diagnostic mode. I want to replace either the control panel board or the entire control system. The motor is 90V DC. For amperage, the motor label says "19A S6 25%" which has no meaning that I understand, other than perhaps that the maximum amperage is 19. The label says "APMS" rather than "AMPS", and I wonder if the "S6" is supposed to be "SC" for "stall current." All of the characters on the label are very legible. To replace the entire set of controls, I can use an industrial DC motor control, but how much horsepower does the control actually need to be able to provide? I don't think that the one on the treadmill actually provides 19A, and is probably close to 1 HP or so in its capability.  To replace the control panel with something else and keep the existing motor control, what do I need? Do I need some type of complex driver circuit? Does it need feed back from tach sensor to do a good job of keeping the speed steady?  If it will work well, I want a simple control set up like a KB Electronics KBMD-240D to which I will add a safety cut-off switch with a lanyard.

Cooling of Laptops - It it possible to use copper pipe and heat convection to achieve this?? Answered

I have a compaq laptop that runs the cpu at 55 °C which is equal to 130 - +°F. I have constructed a fan extraction system using my computer desk that has two fans underneath extracting the hot air from the bottom of the laptop unit and 2 fans directing cool air into the laptop  from behind. I am only getting a 5C temperature drop. That is when the computer is idle. If the computer is actively processing this temperature goes up. The core temperature is constant 4 degrees high the cpu. I have read that using a hot water bottle is an effective way of reducing the temperature. I actually tried this method and it gave me much the same result as the fans. see this site http://digitalcomposting.wordpress.com/2008/04/30/water-cooled-laptop-stand-6/ Has anyone tinkered with the notion of using  a sealed copper coiled tubing with water or coolant. That the laptop can sit on via a thin aluminum plate as its base and acting as a heat transference agent then using the  natural heat convection en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_transfer to cool the laptop. This is achieved by having one of the sealed ends of the copper tube immersed into cold liquid. The convection would presumably happen due to the heat and cold differences. Your opinions and further Ideas are welcome.

LED Light Strips to light Art Booth?

I would like to create lighting for my art booth using LED lighting strips. I have already worked with these and really like them, but never in the size I would need to light my booth. Everything I have done, was powered but 8 AA batteries. Example of a lite booth, with conventional track lighting. http://jwallacephoto.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/2008-04-booth-paseo.jpg My idea is to light my 10x10 booth with 3 10' lengths of aluminum angle iron http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/9/91/913173c2_vbattach89423.jpeg and put two 10' strips on each of the 2 inner surfaces (inside the L shape). So I would have a total of 60' of LED strips. I need to illuminate 3 of the 4 walls. My first question, would this be too bright? If so, would a single row on each piece of angle iron do the job? Second question is connecting it together and powering it. My only option is to run it off batteries, because not all events have easy access to power and the ones that do, charge a hefty fee. I need something light weight to carry, I don't want to go with a car battery, but feel with this many lights, I might have to. Considering they need to be run for at least 8 hours. But, I really want each 10' section to be self powered and contained. So that I can hang it from inside the tent and not have to run wires all over the place to power the 3 sections. In a perfect world, each one would self powered with a single battery box attached to it at one end and at the other would be a short wires to connect the top and bottom strip inside the V grove to make it all one piece. Making it a 20' length in one 10' section. Anyways, it's late and I think I am starting to ramble. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Broken backlight on laptop screen - Project ideas anyone?

I'm opening up to this lovely community since your creativity never fails to amaze me. I've had a laptop that has been sitting in my closet for about a year (Its a Thinkpad T43 i believe) which was in fair shape until one day it would no longer function, hence the closet bit. I got a little curious when I was digging through clothes and found it again, and played around on it and noticed if you held a light directly on it you could just barely see the screen, so I managed to reinstall windows, hook it up through S-video to my TV, and voila. But I dont use it that much, so I wanted to do some kind of project with it. I've seen the DIY projectors made form overheads, which would seem like a logical choice since it'd be easy enough with a working screen that has no backlight, but the thing is I already own a projector capable of 720p/1080i so I'm skipping this one.I've seen people do multi touch with screens before (ie things like http://multitouch.fieryferret.com/2008/04/finished-table.html) . but I'd want to do something larger. Then there's things like https://www.instructables.com/id/Back-projection-56-inch-multitouch-television./which are cool, but i dont have the need for something large in that format. I'd like to do something like a large coffee table with multitouch (like Surface) but I'm not sure how possible that is to do. Here's a rough sketchup of the basic idea (very basic, very rough. I'm at work wiht only access to MSPaint, and should be doing work anyway :) but with the 56 inch they have that mirror setup and I dont think you could do that with something that low to the ground (like a coffee table), correct?i'd love to hear your thoughts on that, but also.. what do you guys think? Got any good ideas for laptop with just the backlight blown? I dont really need a fileserver, and I have another laptop, so if you guys have any wild ideas out there.. I'm game.Cheers,Ian

Wii - Play Backup Games without modchip -- System Menu V 4.0 ?

Please note: I am beginner at this. Ok, here is what I have done: 1. I have upgraded my System Menu to version 4.0 using the update option from the Wii2. Following this instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/S9RV0FWFN4H8OED/ I have installed cIOS36 Rev7. This means that I have also installed Homebrew Channel (using Bannerbomb exploit ). 3. Following the same instructable I have got to the point where I got the Error ret-2011 which a lot of other people (with System Menu 4.0) got: " tried to install the 04-BackupLauncher0.3g+_249-NeoRame.rar like instructed below.I get a installing ticket...ERROR! (ret = -2011)"4. After that everything went down the drain. I have tried to follow this instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/SQHX9S3FUNOXOKE/ with both versions (offline and online), but I kept getting the -2011 error. 5. I have tried to follow other tutorials out there but I did not get any further because of different errors. Now I do not know what version of cIOS or other files I have installed on my Wii.I have tried to update again my System Menu 4.0 in case I have messed up anything but my Wii says that I already have the latest version installed. So my questions are: 1. How do I know what version of the Files I have and whether I have messed up my System Menu ? And how do I get back to the original System Menu 4.0 of the files? 2. Since the aim of this entire thing is to play backup games, how do I fix this and how do I get my Wii to play the backup games, from backup DVDs (I've seen that it might be possible to play them from USB devices, I am not interested in that right now). Also, I do not want to install any other homebrew applications (like DVD players or video players).3. If in the process I have to downgrade my System Menu, what are the exact steps to do that? Thank you very much for your help and I hope someone will be able to help me make things work !If you think you can help but you need more information, please comment on my question and I will provide as much information as I can

I cant quite get it to work properly. You can make changes anywhere.

Where did I go wrong [Batch]?

What is wrong with this code? I have it open this program: @echo off mode 18,4 title Actions :1 cls echo (B)           (Y) echo   (A)       (X) echo. set /p a= echo %a%> link.txt goto 1 And this prgram is supposed to read the input. Basically, the first one sends a message to a TXT file. Then this program picks up the message from the TXT file and turns it into a variable. @echo off title Whack-a-Mole set a=10 set mole=0 set time=0 set timeend=0 :Start cls set /a a=%a%-1 echo This game uses the "Actions" gamepad unit. echo. echo. echo Hit the most moles to win! echo. echo Game starts in %a% seconds. ping localhost -n 2 > nul if %a% equ 0 goto Game goto Start :Game if exist Actions.bat start Actions.bat cls echo Press "A" on the gamepad unit to swing your bat. Press "B" to stop. echo. if not exist link.txt ( echo The file "link.txt" could not be found. This game cannot be played without it. ping localhost -n 4 > nul ) if not exist Actions.bat ( echo The file "Actions.bat" could not be found. This game cannot be played without it. ping localhost -n 4 > nul ) ping localhost -n 4 > nul :GameBegin cls echo Ready... ping localhost -n 4 > nul cls echo GO! ping localhost -n 2 > nul :Mole1 cls set /a time=%random%/7000 echo Reaction Time:%timeend% echo Moles Hit:%mole% echo. echo [__][__][__][__] echo   [__][__][__][__] echo     [__][__][__][__] ping localhost -n 2 > nul set a=< link.txt echo 00> link.txt if /i "%a%"=="a" goto gameover if /i "%a%"=="b" goto gameover if /i "%a%"=="00" goto gameover set a= ping localhost -n %time% > nul goto Mole2 :Mole2 cls set /a time=%random%/7000 echo Reaction Time:%timeend% echo Moles Hit:%mole% echo. echo [__][__((O.O))_] echo   [__][__/:_][__] echo     [__][/ [__][__] ping localhost -n 2 > nul set a=< link.txt echo 00> link.txt if /i "%a%"=="a" ( set /a mole=%mole%+1 goto Time ) if /i "%a%"=="b" goto gameover if /i "%a%"=="00" goto gameover set a= ping localhost -n %time% > nul goto gameover :Time set timestart=%time:~2% set timeend=%timestart:~4,2% if /i %timeend% equ 01 set timeend=1 if /i %timeend% equ 02 set timeend=2 if /i %timeend% equ 03 set timeend=3 if /i %timeend% equ 04 set timeend=4 if /i %timeend% equ 05 set timeend=5 if /i %timeend% equ 06 set timeend=6 if /i %timeend% equ 07 set timeend=7 if /i %timeend% equ 08 set timeend=8 if /i %timeend% equ 09 set timeend=9 set /a timeend= %timeend%+2+%random:~1,1% if %timeend% geq 60 ( goto gameover ) goto Mole1 :gameover cls echo You got %mole% moles. echo Your fastest time was %timeend%. echo. echo Type in "B" on the gamepad unit to go back to the main menu. :input set a=< link.txt if /i "%a%"=="b" goto Start goto input It may look kinda wierd here, but that's because of instructables, not me. Anyways, it goes through the animations and doesn't even notice that there are any IF commands. Where did I go wrong? EDIT: Figured it out. Corrected: SET /P a=< link.txt Forgot the /p!
