CPU grill?

I recently decided to make a mini-grill (similar to the gas/charcoal ones found around the site), but I want to be able to do it with electricity. My plan is to overheat a CPU with a heatsink attached and allow the actual heatsink to be the grill. The only trouble is that I can't figure out from the pinout which pins I have to supply power to. Could anyone give me an indication as to which pins they are? Also, any other advice would be appreciated. =) CPU Pinout: http://download.intel.com/design/Pentium4/datashts/29864312.pdf

CPU Overheating? Answered

I have an Acer Aspire x1700 that I am trying to fix. I have replaced the 220w psu with a Seasonic 250w because this model is known to have bad power supplies (it wouldn't power on at all with the original psu). I also replaced the original thermal paste since I removed the heatsink/fan to clean it. When I got everything back in and plugged it in, no power. I read that the graphics card (Nvidia Geforce G100) can sometimes fail and cause the pc to not power on. I removed that and turned it on. This time it had power and booted normally to the Windows desktop. After about a minute the cpu fan became very loud, like a jet taking off, then it completly shut down. Could I have not applied the thermal paste properly and it was overheating?

Multiple CPUs

Big movie companies have these server type things (rendering clusters?) for processing their 3D and graphics renderings. I found this on makezine as an example of someone who did a linux home version, but there is no description of how it works. I would like to make a windows render cluster but I need some help. There are two reasons I want to do this: 1- I will be able to run my PC uber-fast, and 2- I can create some big time giant renderings of 3d models. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks.

CPU Upgrade?

Hi all. I am looking to upgrade my CPU. I am currently running a Pentium 4 at about 3.0 GHZ. I was thinking about these: Pentium Dual Core Core 2 Duo Core 2 Quad Xeon E3110 I am running on a socket 775. I have a graphics card. I dont think there really is anything else to say. So, what cpu from the above would give the best Bang For Your Buck? The games i play are Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, and Call of Duty 2. I may get COD-MW2 and GTA4. Again, which CPU should i buy? I buy from Circuit City. THANKS!

Dead CPU? Answered

I have an HP dv7 1130us laptop that recently quit working. One day it worked, and when I went to turn it on the next day it gave me a black screen and the light by the caps lock button blinked every few seconds. Looking on the hp support page for my computer I found that the blink code meant that the CPU had a problem (see here). I tried taking the CPU out and plugging it back in. Then I bought a CPU from ebay (it is brand new) and put it in. Same problem. When I turn it on the fan comes on strongly then cuts to a lower rpm abruptly. No light comes from the screen. As I said the caps lock and num lock lights flash once every 2 or 3 seconds. The light by the power plug stays on solid. I am not sure how it could matter but I should also mention that we got a new wifi router the day before this happened. There is other helpfull information here. Do you have any ideas about what might be the problem?

How a CPU is born

While doing some research, I saw a link that said "How CPUs Are Made: From Sand to Silicon". Mildly intrigued and not knowing anything about how they are made, I clicked and went to the page and read.     The article briefly runs through a highly abridged series of steps in the making of what eventually turns out to be an Intel i7 processor. It starts off with the raw materials (SiO2, e.g., sand) and how they turn it into monstrous (about 220 pounds!), essentially pure, silicon ingots from which wafers are made. and many steps later the processors are boxed up and ready for store shelves.

How to correct bent cpu pins on motherboard in CPU socket? the pins are of motherboard not on cpu...(INTEL)?

There are several pins that are bent on the new INTEL MB that i recently purchased and found it to have some bent pins. I tried to get an RMA but they deny it. However the pins were not so much damaged as they are now. I've read a post here abt correcting CPU pins that are on CPU. But this one is even trickier. Its on the board, in the socket, the pins are thinner than that of CPU and its hard to take a knife or a smart  card in that area... I really need help on this topic as this is a new Board and I dont know how to react. Please help...

CPU architecture idea/concept? Answered

I don't know much about CPUs or computers for that matter, but why hasn't anyone got the idea to take a multicore CPU architecture, and stagger the clock frequency of each core and have one shared cache memory between them all in the center so that the 4 cores can run one thread of machine code super fast? I'd imagine the reason we don't see clock frequencies greater than 4GHz is a problem with getting silicon to switch at those frequencies (maybe internal parasitic inductive and capacitive effects at the silicon level?) hence why multicore processors have become a thing? The problem I see with multicore CPUs is that programs need to be written in such a way so they can take advantage of parallel processing threads, and some tasks simply do not lend themselves well to parallel processing. Also, what is it about a CPU that determines the performance? It can't be just clock frequency(s) and the number of CPU cores, surely it has to do with some architecture and instruction-set stuff, but what exactly?

Again, my choices are: Pentium Dual-Core E6500 Core 2 Duo E7600 I want something BETTER than the Pentium 4, but I dont want to spend much more than 200 dollars, preferably.. closer to 120 or so.. I know that those prices are CHEAP for a CPU, but well.. I dont have the money for a NEW pc, or a Core 2 Quad or expensive Core 2 Duo. If you're wondering why I dont have the money for a new pc or a more expensive CPU, Its because im 12. :D PLEASE REPLY ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!

Custom uber simple OS?

After playing in the world of arduino for a while I have become curious if it is possible to use a common cpu, motherboard ect. To do the same thing as with a small microprocessor. Could one for example load the arduino bootloader to a cpu or just write to it with serial in order to use it for purposes similar to arduino and picaxe.  I know its a weird and wasteful idea but im just curious if it is even possible with modern electronics. I dont think it would be hard to find a junked old desktop and even if it was 1 mhz (much more likely to be 1 ghz) it would be extremely fast. Could you imagine an arduino with that clock speed! You could measure the length of pulses much smaller and you would be able to potentially handle 32 bit and maybe even 64 bit operations. Just a curious thought I had, could it be done and what would you do with such a system

How can I build a simple computer around a retro cpu like the Z80?

I am interested in building a small computer and had previously opted to build a very minimal computer out of discrete components (think 4- bit). Due to cost constraints and my skill level in electronics I don't think I can do this at the current time. So, I have opted to try building a small computer with a pre-built retro cpu. First, my two goals: <>I do not want a computer with extra capabilities like serial output or the ability to drive a display. I want a "bare bone" computer. This entails a dip switch input and led indicating output. I would also like the option to switch to some sort of latching system for the inputs and outputs so my computer can control and be controlled by peripherals as my skill level increases. <>Ideally I would like to have as few chips as possible. I was initially planning to use a Z80 as the cpu because wikipedia says it had the need for less supporting ic's than its predecessors. Also, there is a lot of documentation out there on the cpu. You may be asking why I am asking for advice then but the truth is because the Z80 computer building tutorials I have found all involve a screen and are more complex than I can manage. If there is another processor that is easier to work with, please tell me! As best I can figure, for my basic computer I would need: the processor, a ram chip, a rom chip, 8 latches for the input and for the output (for an 8 bit processor), an 8 switch dip switch, a clock, and an 8 led display. Are there any other chips I am missing (buffers or the like)? Also, how can a program be written to the cpu? My thoughts on this were that the very first address of the rom section would have instructions to read say bit 1 and bit 2 of the input. It would keep doing this if both were low. When bit 1 goes high it triggers the cpu to jump to a section of rom which performs a loop where it reads the input->stores it in a certain memory address allocated to storing programs-> increments this memory address by 1->reads and stores the next input. If it read a bit 2 initially it would jump to the memory address where program starts. All in all this seems like a very bad way to program, what is the best way to program? I am fairly certain that some startup program will need to be written to the first address of memory in the rom. Thanks for your help.

CPU: Multiplier vs. Bus Speed? Answered

Hi. I have been overclocking my new cpu (AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE) and I was all excited about having an unlocked multiplier, because of the Black Edition, yet I can't even stably change it! I was told that you should up the CPU bus speed as much as you can while leaving the CPU stable, then move on to the multiplier. Yet after I get to the stable bus speed (235) I can't up the multiplier even one notch. It is currently 15.5. This was the stock multiplier. My question is, is it worth it to lower the bus speed so I can stably increase the multiplier. And is there a way to stably increase the multiplier even after you max out the bus speed that I am obviously not doing? Thanks in advance.

Will this motherboard support a dual core CPU? Answered

I'm helping my friend do some upgrades on his computer, it's a Compaq Presario SR2034NX desktop. I'm wondering if it will support a dual core processor or not. According to HP, it doesn't, but looking around on the internet, I've seen quite a few people have upgraded to dual cores. However, there's some minor differences with this particular motherboard. It seems that there are actually two different types of motherboards with the same model number from Asus (A8M2N-LA). On the HP site they have different HP model numbers (a more advanced board - the NodusM3-GL8E, and the one I have - the Naos-GL6; both with the same A8M2N-LA number for Asus) It appears that the NodusM3-GL8E supports all sorts of fun things like 8 GiB of DDR2 800 RAM and dual cores up the wazoo. However, the Naos-GL6 looks like a stripped down version of the NodusM3-GL8E (two less RAM sockets, etc.), so it might not support a dual core. I'd like to know before purchasing, since Newegg won't accept processor returns for a refund. Also, 800 Mhz RAM would be nice to have, HP says it only supports 667 Mhz RAM but other people have put 800 Mhz in with no issues. Does anyone know if my friend's mobo will support a dual core and 800 Mhz RAM?
