DC motor regulation

I am planning to build a small gearbox that depends on a steady rpm from a 3V dc motor. I understand that the output rpms will change in correlation to the fluctuation of input power. My question is, if I used a regulator to regulate the input voltage from 5V to 3V, will that keep the motor rpms steady?

DC Motor Problem?

Hi , to whoever is reading this .I wired 2  3v dc toy motors in series and I used about 4.5v as the power source. As I powered it up one motor spun fast and the other spun slower , so I thought the one running slower was defective an so I bought another motor and wired it in series with the  that was spinning fast and thought their speeds would be equalled, however the new one I bought started running faster and the old I one I had that spun faster began spinning slower than the new one. I tried the new one with the old one that had been spinning slower and arrived at the same result.. Could this be because I wired the motors in series ? I  Really need help s o please help me and thank you in advance and for taking the time the read this.

PIR DC Motor? Answered

Hi all, I am trying to set up a dc motor controlled by a PIR sensor using an arduino.  When the PIR sensor is triggered, I would like the motor to turn on for half a second and then off.  However, no matter what "delay" I write into the sketch, the motor always stays on for around four seconds.  Could someone please help me? I've got a DC motor from a treadmill that when I spin it generates a small voltage then drops off to zero even as the motor continues to spin. Is it shot? Can it be repaired, if so, at what cost.?

DC Motor Control Help?

A very long story short, I desperately need assistance in knowledge with some motor control. I need to control 2,DC 6v motors with encoders that include 6-pin 2.0mm pitch PH JST cables that break out motor inputs. The bottom line would be what do I need to control these motors, to go forward and reverse, and operate it from a wireless controller? I appreciate any and all help! spec a dc motor for a vehicle

I am making an electric vehicle. Assume no friction on a flat surface. The vehicle will have two dc electric motors preferably 24v or 48v system as space is an issue(about 3.5 x 4 feet) one motor on each drive axle. The vehicle will weigh 2000lbs have a max speed of 10miles per hour be able to reach max speed in under 5 seconds overall wheel diameter will be 16 inches Can be geared down to attain needed torque but must go up to 10miles per hour. Please include formulas so I can at least know how to do this in the future. I need to know power, torque, rpm needed for electric motor. Thank you

DC motor speed controling Answered

HI! I'm trying to mod my Tascam cassette recorder. I want to be able control speed of the motor. So I bought on ebay PWM controller and after installation thing don't run so smooth as I wish. the problem is ... when pot is all the way down at 7 clock motor is off, when I turn it to 8 a clock motor starts spinning and reaches its full speed at 9 a clock. and from 9 a clock to 4 there is no effect on speed. Hey Guys, Today I Need help selecting a potentionmeter for my 3v dc batteries, The setup will be like this, There will be 4 3v dc motors in parelllel drawing about 800 mah i think with a 6v 2 amp 4 aa cell battery pack. I want it to be so that when i turn the potentiometer to the lowest the motor goes to the slowest speed (or close) and when i do it the other way it goes to the highest speed (at 6v). I have 2 dc motors that i will control using an arduino using pwm, my input voltage is 9.6 volts from a battery, but i will use a 5v voltage regulator to power the arduino, the motors are 3v motors. DC motors as generators in parallel?

Hey guys, im doin a project, ill be using two cordless drill motors with a maximum output of 12v each and unknown amp atm. My question is this: Both the outputs of those two motors will equal 24 volts, but I want 12 volts and increased amperage - this will, for the most part, be used to charge a 12 volt lead acid battery and I dont require the safety police on this one. So, can I take both outputs of the dc motors and wire them in parallel and have a resultant potental 12v maximum? Or will I have to use electrickery?? I have only a novice/intermediate skill in electronics and my parts come from re-using old scrap technology. tx, Sky

How to size a DC motor? Answered

I want to rotate a stainless steel shaft that is in a vertical position having a 40 mm diameter and 300 mm length. The motor will be attached to the bottom of the shaft, so when the motor is turned, the said shaft will rotate. The shaft is not driving anything, it just turns on its own. The shaft's mass is 3kg(according to my calculations).  I want the shaft to rotate at an angular speed of 45 degrees per second. Having this information, how can i size the motor that will do the job. What kind of torque would i need, what kind of wattage. Please show me some calculations so I can know how motor sizing is correctly done.  Very much appreciated, Chris

Running DC motor underwater? Answered

I have heard that DC motors can run underwater and am trying to build a project with them running underwater. I recently tried running a brush less DC cooling fan underwater and it broke. Meanwhile I tried another mini DC motor, the kind that cost $.99 each and it worked fine. Does anyone have any ideas why one worked and the other did not? Does it have to do with being brushed or not? Lastly would something like http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1117 theoretically run underwater? Thanks.

DC P.M. motor help

Went to the scrapyard and pulled out the motor that runs a treadmill... thinking the treadmill plugs into the wall I thought the motor was going to be AC...WRONG, it a DC P.M. I want to build a home made disc sander and was wondering if it possible to make this motor run from the wall outlet? There was a small circuit board next to the motor but I didnt grab it since I had disconnected all the wires from it. BTW, Im completely clueless to electrical stuff so be gentle with me. Dask

dc- motor ultracapacitive skateboard

Need help in this project as I am abit lost with the programming of my project. My skateboard will be able to charge by manual moving and then discharge to electrically move the skateboard when needed. Adjustment of the speed of a DC motor Answered

I'm working on something that requires a very low speed motor (~.5-4 RPM). I found a motor that runs at 1.5v @ a maximum of 7rpm (5040RPM max with 1428:1 ratio) I need however, something to lower and raise the speed of this motor. I know that people say PWMs for this, but the only one I can find is a 12 volt and has gotten mediocre reviews. Could I use this 12 volt PWM in this system, or could someone point me to a reasonable PWM that would work?

Variable Speed on a DC motor

Hi everyone, Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can slow down the roatational speed of a 14.4V DC motor? Its come out of a cordless drill and I have another project to put it to use but it rotates too fast at the moment. I have 2 options: 1) Use a variable resistor to slow down the speed 2) Use a gearing system In an ideal world I would prefer to use the variable resistor, as then I could change the speed of the motor quickly and effortlessly. Mechanical circuits are not my best skill and Ive already burnt out a cheap potentiometer (presumably too much current?) so I need to think more inteligently about what the design should be rather than just bolting components on the side of it. If anyone has any ideas please feel free, im open to all suggestions at the moment. Thanks Mat.

Hi all Can anyone suggest the best way to replace the variable speed trigger of a 18v battery drill, with a remote from the drill adjustable speed control. I want to control the speed and have it stay at the setting until I turn it off or adjust the speed. The drill will be clamped to a board with no battery and powered by a power supply. Need help choosing a dc motor!!

 Hi, My students are building model cars our of balsa wood that move b/c of a dc motor.  All of the motors I have are burning out - they can't run long, I used to have a dc motor that started out slow, built up speed and then ran fast and for a looooooong time.  Does anyone know what type of motor i'm talking about?  please help.....i gotta get them asap.  thanks! patti:)

stock dc motor with 3 switches that spins, stop/lock in place or stay neutral?

I'm trying to build a motorized yarn spooler. The motor is controlled by 3 switches, one to spin it, one to stop or lock it in place and a neutral switch, so the spool can turn freely if it need be. Is there a motor that can be operated that way? Thank you.

I want to use a 12/6vdc motor that will generate its own renewable power to be stored in batteries.  I want to use a small motor where the outer casing will rotate and the armature will act as a fixed support to a frame. However a small outside diameter is an issue, so it should not exceed 2inches. Is this possible????? I could go another way with gears but I am trying to develop a unique  propulsion method

Universal motor

After disassembling a hedge trimmer I have obtained a universal motor (meaning it can run on either ac or dc) It has a power rating of 400W, and a label indicates that it has 1/2 horsepower. Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do with it? it's fairly small (15cm X 5cm X 5cm) and in reasonable condition. Thank you for any responses.

Does a 12V DC motor output DC current? ?

I am doing a science fair project that involves a solar panel, connected to a charge controller, connected to a 12V battery, connected to a switch system that can either go to a flywheel with a 12V DC motor or straight to a DC to AC inverter which leads to light standard light bulbs. The system worked (light bulbs lit) when I connected the panel to the controller to the battery to the inverter. However, when I had the battery power the flywheel and then have the flywheel output its energy to the inverter, the inverter shut down and would not work (red alarm went off). The flywheel is producing more than 10V (starts at about 11V) for at least 30 seconds, and the inverter's low voltage shut down in 10.5 plus or minus 5 volts. So why doesn't it work? Is the inverter messed up or is the flywheel outputing AC power? Also, when I connected the solar panel to the charge controller to the flywheel, the charge controller completely shut off. Are charge controllers not able to be directly linked to motors? And if I tried to directly connect the solar panel (which has 20V) to the flywheel (with a 12V motor), without a charge controller in between, what would happen?

Stepper motor driver?

Hi! I am trying to find a good h-bridge for a 3 volt stepper motor. Basically my plan is to build a stepper motor controller with an arduino for controlling various functions in a model kit. I have the arduino-kit and the motors. But I need a good reference for a h-bridge, but all i can find are chips rated for much larger drive currents. Also exactly how hot does a hbridge get when under load? I would like to integrate the bridges into the kit, but since it is plastic, I would like to know in advance how hot it gets, and if it gets too hot I'll have to look at another solution.Any help appreciated! PS. If you can please put the hbridge part ID in your answer for easy reference. DS.

Have a timed switch on motor ?

Hello, Im very new with electronics and im working on a project, but I need to make a motor go forward then after a few seconds reverse and so on. A simple controller for a dc treadmill motor?

I have a United Technologies dc motor, 2.5 hp @ 120VDC, but no controller.  It has a red & black wire, plus 2 blue wires.  The black goes through a choke coil.  Anybody have a breadboard type of design for a speed controller with hookup instructions?  I can solder, follow a schematic, and  wire a house, but  am not up on electronics.  Last radio I built was in the mid 50's, so I probably need more than usual specifics.  Thanks for any help you can offer.  Ed B

Treadmill Motor Controller

HI, I would like to make a very simple controller my treadmill's Motor. Its MoBo went bad and I dont wanna fork over $200 for a new one. The motor works fine. I just want to make a very basic DC Motor speed controller. I know just a simple Pot or other variable resistor wont do.Will it? I've been messing around with Electronics since I was 9 so I'm not afraid to solder up some circuits even if its a complicated one. Im looking to spend around $50. Thanks.

help building a dc motor controller

I am trying to build a simple dc motor controller.  The motor is from a treadmill rated at 90v dc, 21 amps.  I have a PWM (rated at a 90 v dc, capable of controlling 0.01-1000w max 15a)  and a bridge rectifier model mp3510s (35 amp single phase).  I can get the dc out of the rectifier at 106 volts.  How can I drop this to 90v  safely to make it work?  I have just enough electrical knowledge to be dangerous, and I know this!  any suggestions?     The end result will be to power a 12 inch metal lathe
