I have an abundance of old network cards for pc, alot of which have removeable chips.  Are those things good for anything?  Some of the cards are pci and some are old isa cards.

Ethernet cable

I have broadband. I'm trying to set up a second network. The first one has a modem and a router. My second network just has a router so far. Since I'm subscribing for the internet, can I make an ethernet to coax cable. What I want to do is take one end of an ethernet cable and one end of a coax cable and put together. Which wires do I put on? This is probably really confusing, but this is the best way I can describe it.

Ethernet to USB 3.0?

I was looking around this afternoon and found the wonderful 'PCI Express X16 to USB 3.0 adapter' which got me thinking, This could be an awesome way to add a better graphics card to a small computer e.g. a laptop or preferably a Raspberry Pi. Now i know that the Pi doesn't have any USB 3.0 ports but it does have Ethernet (which from past experience is quite a lot faster than USB 2.0) My question to you is this: Is it possible to get a USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter so that we can have USB 3.0 ports on a Raspberry Pi, and if so would the Pi be fast enough to run an external graphics card connected through a PCI Express to USB 3.0 adapter?

Ethernet Wiring Order

Hi, I have a cat6 ethernet cable with 8 non-twisted wires all apparently being of different solid colors. Is it OK to attach both ends to the connectors in any order as long as both ends have the same color order? Since the colors are non-standard I can't go by any convention such as T-568A or T-568B. I am using this in my home and since it will be a one-off I don't care about convention standards as long as the configuration I use will work. By the way, do I need to be concerned about the fact that they are non-twisted wires? What's the difference anyway? I would appreciate your answer. Thanks.

I need to connect it to the internal network for others to share this printer as they do with the laser printer. There is a hub located in another part of the building that connects this intranet. Is it possible/can anyone explain how to transmit a USB signal through an "Ethernet over power" system.

OK, so we have seen "Ethernet over power" devices. In my home there is one with the "BT Vision" (its a UK thing). But I was wondering, does the input protocol of the signal in, allow you to send your own signal? I can understand if it can only send discreet digital signals, so analogue is probably out of the question. I'm sure you are all wondering what I mean. Well although my idea is for something completely different, involving a camera, and a mains powered reloading BB gun, I will appeal to the SPY cam enthusiasts, who are often very clever with lots of ingenuity. So you somehow manage to secrete a Spy-cam in somebodies stereo. How do you access the video? well there are 2 ways. one is to store is locally, this is limited by how bigger storage you can afford, and the limit of the device. The ones I know are normally limited at 4GB or so.  The other way is to use my suggested way, locate the AC input of the Stereo, implant the AC part of the "Ethernet over power" onto it, then plug the USB device into the Ethernet part.(probably with some kind of mods). Then at the computer in question, connect the output to your computer, there is bound to be a 5v supply inside the stereo, but if not, there are plenty of 5v regulators available. what does the community think?

I have an interesting, but simple task at hand here!

I have just been given an old laptop to checkout, a Toshiba Tecra 8000 at that. It's a fairly old laptop and needless to say, I don't have a pcmcia ethernet cards, or any at all! I should try and aquire a crapload of them, wifi would be nice. Anywho, I'm stuck with a built in modem here, a 56k modem. I know, and have seen it done, that you can connect two computers that have dialup modems, together, and transfer data between them, and possibly share an internet connection?? I've done a bit of googling but so far all I found was about connecting two windows 98 computers together. I'm currently installing a slipstreamed version of xp onto this laptop and I have xp on here, where should I try starting with this?? I need to get an internet connection on here somehow.

Arduino relay power over Ethernet cable?

Hi. I have an Arduino setup with 2 individual relay boards controlling two 240v power outlets. The relays are housed separately from the Arduino and I have connected the two via a standard ethernet cable. The relays I have are both 12v powered and switched via a 5v Arduino digital pin. I have currently wired the following. Orange and orange/white ---> 12v+ (from a 12v plug transformer) Blue and blue/white ---> GROUND (connected to both plug transformer and Arduino GROUND) Brown ---> Switched +5v from Arduino to relay 1. Brown/white ---> Switched +5v from Arduino to relay 2. SITUATION. One of these relays for some reason isn't working properly. The board is receiving the right power but the relay itself is not clicking/switching. Maybe sticky contacts. The whole thing is already wired and the unused cables of the network cable trimmed so I cannot use them.  MY QUESTION I have a spare single 5v powered relay board which I could replace the faulty 12v with, but with no wires left to connect it, could I pinch one from the orange pair that I am sending 12v through to the first relay and use that for the 5v to the replacement one? In a less round about summary... can I send 12v+ through a single strand of ethernet cable with a run of only about 30cm? Thanks, Steve.

Is there a way of making it work across the internet, rather than just the local network? I imagine it has something to do with port forwarding, but I don't know much about it. Thanks in advance.
