PC hard disk makes loud clicking sound and does not boot up

Hello, I had some fall on top of a hard disk and now the disk does not work or boot up. It appears the BOIS does detect it but it then makes a loud clicking sound and cannot be read. Is there anything I can do to retrieve the data? The model is Maxtor DiamondMax plus 9m 80GB. Thanks, Lucas

Distinguish glass hard disk platters from aluminum without marring the reflective surface? Answered

I have hundreds of hard disk platters from disassembled hard drives.  Some are made of glass, some are made of aluminum.  The glass ones, when flexed, shatter into thousands of razor shards which screech across the room. I would like to avoid that in the future.  I only want to use the aluminum ones, but I don't want to mar the reflective surface. I've thought of weighing them, but the platters some from many manufacturers and eras and so the weights won't be consistent.  Magnets don't attract glass or aluminum. Does glass float? (I'm guessing no.)  Is the reflective surface transparent? (I'm guessing no again, but maybe a strong light would work?) There has to be a way....

Reformatting a hard drive? Answered

Hi there. I know most of you reading this are thinking of the simple process that is reformatting a hard drive, and are prepared to offer me an obvious and somewhat novice explanation as "right click > format...". Please don't, this is not the case. I recently acquired an external hard drive previously used as a Direct TV Dvr. The hardware and everything is fine, and my computer recognizes it as a USB Mass Storage Device. However, the disk itself is in a format my Windows-based computer cannot recognize, read, or understand, and - as a result - does not acknowledge it exists. I need to figure out how to reformat this to NTFS / FAT32 to use on a windows machine. Also note, as a result of the lack of recognition of the disk, I can only guess its drive letter. CMD does not recognize it at all - I have tried mounting disks E - Z with no result. If needed, I have access to a Macintosh, but that is preferably the last resort as it resides about an hour away from where I am currently.

Disk boot error? Answered

Last night, I wanted some files off my laptop drive, so I stuck it in an external enclosure and plugged it into my desktop (whilst on). I then turned off the desktop without unplugging my laptop drive and turned it on again today, forgetting to unplug it. I have USB booting enabled, so it tried to boot from the laptop drive and as I was out of the room when it was booting, it entered the recovery partition as the hardware is incompatible. I have done this before, so I just turned off my computer, unplugged the drive, and restarted. Instead of booting from my primary internal drive, it got stuck on the post screen. It detected it, but wouldn't go any further. I then thought that it was still looking for the USB drive, so changed the boot order and removed usb boot, same problem. Removing my primary drive just returned the error "disk boot error, insert boot drive and press enter to continue", so I inserted the primary hard drive (I have it in a hot-swap bay, so it can easily be removed, although being my primary hard drive, not "hot"). After doing so, it kept returning a similar error. I then figured that it was still looking for my laptop drive as a primary boot device, so I cleared CMOS with the jumper and after setting it up again, disabling every other bootable interface except the sata port my primary drive is connected to, and it still just gets stuck on post. I have left it about 10 mins and still get the same problem. It is also hard to enter BIOS or any of the other utilities, as it waits until after post, so I have to either remove all drives or insert the laptop drive in it's enclosure. How can I get my desktop to boot from the primary hard drive again? Inserting the install disk is also hard, because I don't actually have a DVD drive yet, so I installed Windows 7 extended trial through a memory stick from my laptop with a disk drive. I have since deleted it off my memory stick, and my laptop is now in pieces hooked up to my monitor/keyboard/mouse instead of my desktop. It is on it's back and the hard drive bay is open in case I need it again. My BIOS is award with additional features on a Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3 board. Both drives are Hitachi sata-II drives, one being 3.5" and one being 2.5".

LED disk monitor

I'm thinking of making an LED based hard drive monitor that will show the % of free space. My thoughts are either an Electric Imp or a Spark Particle wifi controller and then some kind of OSX script that runs  on my server to read the disk usage and push it to a web server. I'll be using APA102 or LPD8806 strips. Any thoughts or suggestions? Cheers.

Boot disk error?

I recently built two computers with amd fx-4300 processors, geforce 650 ti video cards, generic 4Gb memory, generic power supplies and GIGABYTE 78LMT-S2P motherboards. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on the systems and began installing various programs I needed. When I was done for the day I shut down the computers and turned off the powerstrip. The next day when I went to start them up, I was getting a boot error. After inserting an Ubuntu live disk into the computer, I checked the hard drive, which opened up no problem and still contained all of the files from the os. The rule out the software I was installing, I reinstalled Linux on both computers, and rebooted, after which point there seemed to be no problem, until I turned off the powerstrip again and I got another boot error when I went to turn them back on. Thinking it might be the disk I was using to install linux, I burned another disk with the same os and tried that, and the problem persisted. The fact that it happened on both systems leads me to beleive that it isnt a hardware defect, but possibly and incompatibility between hardware parts, or a bios issue. Has anyone else ever encountered a situation like this where the os doesn't load after the power supply is switched on and off? If so, what causes it and what can I do to fix it? Edit: It seems that it actually fails to boot every time it is shut down, though it works fine when it is only rebooted. Edit#2: Interestingly enough, if i run a hard disk check from the live dvd, and then reboot with the disk in, it loads from the hard drive, but then after the next shutdown, it does the same thing Edit#3: After doing a disk check and it says no errors, it says to click a button to reboot. When I do this it gives me this message after it reboots, "Errors were found while checking the disk drive for /. Press F to attempt to fix the errors, I to ignore, S to skip mounting, or M for manual recovery" on the one computer I hit f to automatically fix it, which isn't a permanent fix because the drive coninues to have problems, but will boot after i hit f, and then not after i shutdown again. On the other computer, I hit m, and it gave me the message, "Root filesystem check failed. A maintanence shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system." The shell is from the hard drive, not the cd.

Computer not booting when Hard disk is connected?

Hello, I bought a new system with Segate 2 TB internal hard disk about a week ago. I have Windows 7 running on my PC. Till yesterday my system working fine. Today when i tried to start my system, I see the Intel logo and press f2 for bios and F10 for Boot menu. It does not move from there. I am not able to access BIOS Setup. And BIOS is accessible if I remove the hard disk. If i connect hard disk it does not move from the Intel logo. I tried to connect my hard disk (2TB Segate) to another system, it booting and working fine. I even tried other hard disks (500gb & 1TG Segate) in my new system it booting and working fine. But when i try with the 2TB in my new system I see the Intel logo and press f2 for bios and F10 for Boot menu. It does not move from there. I am not able to access BIOS Setup. I did not get any error message. Hard disk platters all the same? Anatomy??

Found a broken HDD of 1 Tb today. Always good to take apart for the magnets. The platters were 'slightly' warped; must have been thrown around... The highly reflective platters can always be looped on a string, to chase away crows from my garden.  By now, I have several dozens of old platters.  I was thinking, apart from practicalities like dust and gentle handling, could it be possible to just substitute the platters with  other (old= much lower capacity) platters?  The 1 Tb mechanism, including the heads, would want to format the platters for a Tb amount of storage I assume. If the platters are mechanically identical (I notice they don't have a standard thickness), could this work?  Does anyone know what alloys are used, are they coated, with what??? I see no attraction when I hold a supermagnet to it, but there ought to be some kind of magnetic carrier on it.... The shine on the platters might suggest some exotic metal coating; palladium or something like that....???

Floppy Disk Converter?

How does a Floppy Disk Converter work? Heres my problem. I have recently bought a laptop which has Windows Vista. I have an old desktop computer with Windows 98SE. I have no floppy disk drive on the laptop. I want to save the material on the floppy disks onto a USB memory stick. I bought a USB that works for Windows 98SE only to find that you need to download drivers for it from the Internet before it will work. So I plugged my Broadband connection (which is from Vodafone) into the desktop computer to get an Internet connection only to find that the Internet is too new a version for Windows 98SE to read so therefore I cant download the drivers. Also I thought I could save to CD and then put the CD into the laptop to save them to the hard disk but the desktop only has a CD-ROM whereas the laptop has CD-RW. So that wont work either. So I was wondering if a Floppy Disk Converter would be the answer to my problem. Like do you just insert a floppy and a USB into the Floppy Disk Converter and transfer the files. Do you need to connect it to a computer. Sorry for rambling on but I have so many questions about it and I really want to know before I go out and buy one only to find that it is also useless to me. Thanks

Computer hard drive wiping problems

Hi, I have a  custom made computer that has gotten very corrupt (viruses, useless crap, etc.) over the years, and I would like to erase the hard drive. I've tried stuff like Dban (Darik's boot and nuke), only for some reason, when I try to boot from the cd, it just gives me an error like "ERROR CANNOT BOOT FROM CD".  No, I don't have the Windows XP install disk, or any other installation disks. I haven't used it in years, so I don't remember the password. What I'm asking is, is there any way to erase the hard drive without having to get into the account. By the way, yes, I know I would need the XP disk if I were to install XP after, but instead I'm going to install Ubuntu. I can't even boot from the Ubuntu disk, I've tried it. Thanks in advance.

How to recover lost data from a hard-disk ?

Hello everybody, I really need your help in this problem ... Few days ago, my uncle needed to recover his laptop, but he had about 250 GB of important data which I could temporarly take on mine, w transfered every thing using a 16GB flash memory and an old 40 GB hard-disk, and he recovered his laptop and every thing was good then we started to roll back and retransfer the files to his laptop. Here came the problem, the images was transferred to the hard-disk, and then when we connected the hard-disk to his laptop, we were surprised that the hard-disk is empty, totally empty ! So, I tried EaseUS data recovery, Data recovery wizard, recuva, 7 data recovery suit, -and another program i don't remember- on both my laptop and the hard-disk but they get me every thing except these images ! Please help me these images are very important to my uncle and he can't get any another copy of them, any advice is acceptable and thank you for any help :)

Dead external hard drive?

I've been searching the internet for answers for the last couple of hours, but no solutions have helped me so far. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that I have to either take it to an expert for data recovery, or if that isn't possible I'll have to accept the fact that the files are gone. So earlier today I was frapsing some PS4 content with the help of a Roxio video capture (PS4 signal blocked so I used Fraps to get around that). I've been saving the files on my C: drive, but since fraps files tend to get quite big, I changed the save destination to my external hard drive (Buffalo). Immediately after I ended the recording, my computer froze and I had to force shutdown. Upon restart, it started to repair damage to the disc (translated from Finnish), and once it was ready, it then proceeded to the system recovery menu. After at least 2 hours of trying all other options, I ended up choosing the option that resets my computer. Well that really wasn't the end of the world, since the most important files are on my Buffalo hard drive, but after the reset was complete, I couldn't access my external hard drive. I tried everything in Disk Management, at least what was suggested in similar issues, but nothing really changed anything. I can see my external hard drive in the Disk Management, but can't access it. When I try to initialize the disk, an error pops up that says: "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)", and it just shows that the disc is not initialized, and that it is unallocated. Is there any other option than either taking it to an expert for data recovery, or is that too late now? Thanks in advance.

It works great! Except it doesn’t record video, it has great sound quality and a handful of cool features. I've already taken it to the store and was told it would be around $200 or more to get it fixed, when I asked what was wrong with it i didnt get a responce from the man at the store. If anyone has any idea what’s happening or how to fix it without spending $200 I would much appreciate it! Hard drive won't mount?

So, I've had a toshiba 2.5" SATA 250 GB internal HD for a while now. I got it from an old toshiba laptop. I finally got an enclosure for it, and I plugged it in. windows made the sound it makes when you plug something in, and in device manager the usb port said a usb mass storage device was plugged in, but it didn't show up in my computer, nor did it show up in disk management. I searched the net for hours trying to find the problem, reading about how you might need to assign it a letter in disk management, and other more "grim" outlooks on how it might be dead. I listened to it closely, and heard it making very VERY soft ticking noises at a regular rate. I immediately thought the worst, and came to the conclusion that it was dead. The next day, I decided to take it into school with me, as my teacher was pretty smart when it came to computers, and maybe she could provide the tiniest shred of hope. She asked me to plug it into one of the school's desktops. I plugged it in and...it began running like normal. It showed up  on my computer, and showed the correct disk size, as well as a document I'd put on there long ago. I couldn't believe it!  When I got home, I plugged it into my computer, but surprisingly encountered the same problem. I decided to do a bit of experimenting, and I started plugging it into various computers we had around the house, and lined up all the facts I had: It didn't work on my laptop. (runs windows 7 home premium) It DID work on my mom's laptop. (also runs windows 7 home premium) It didn't work on my old desktop. (runs windows xp home edition, but I don't trust it. It's been acting very weird lately) It DID work on my school's desktop. (runs windows 7 enterprise) It DID work on my sister's laptop. (runs windows 7 home premium) I was stumped, to say the least. Can any of you tell me WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?!?!?! The strongest lead I have is that it might not be working correctly on my computer because the usb ports can't provide enough power to mount it. But if my laptop can't mount it, why should my mom's or my sisters be able to? Please provide any other theories you may think are plausible too!

Hard drive wiping problems REFRASED

Hi, I posted another question on the same topic, but I don't think I got my point across. I'll lay down the basics - Is there any way to erase a hard drive WITHOUT having to boot from a cd (like dban or the windows xp install cd) and WITHOUT having to access the accounts. My computer is so corrupt, I can't do either. Don't tell me what I could check to make it work, just answer the question. No, I don't want to take the hard drive out and use another computer to erase it. I do know that I would need the XP disk to reinstall it, but I would need that if I weren't going to install Ubuntu instead. Yes, I tried booting from the ubuntu disk, it didn't work. Also, don't say "well, you're out of luck, take it into a repair shop." That's NOT answering the question. Thanks in advance.

External Hard Drive enclosure for eSATAp connection

Hey, I want to buy a Power over eSATA kit (aka eSATAp) to use with 3.5inch internal hard drives (which are cheaper and faster than laptop 2,5inch drives). I'll be using it on desktop computers on and off, so the higher power consumption of desktop drives is not the issue. Thing is, I want to enclose the internal 3.5inch hard disk in something, for transport. Some case that leaves room for the cable connection (see GIF). Does anyone know if I can adapt existing SATA hard disk enclosures? Or if there is some boxy-thingy out there that I can best adapt to suit my purpose? I was looking for an instructable on this but couldn't find any. Thanks!

The other three lines are connected to each of comparators (+) inputs. Not shown in the schematic, but also important, are the power supply pins of the comparators. The negative supply is connected to ground, while the positive supply is connected to Vcc (in our case +5V)."Which wire I have to use as the reference? Maybe why? What is Vcc? an energie source, like a batterie? If I amplified the output which microcontroller I could use, can I use any mikrochip, or do I have to use a special?and how do I install the firmware?Maybe someone could help me with my questions. How can I get a Vista boot disk for a Dell Studio 1737 with the SATA drivers for the hard drive controller? Answered

P.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0.0cm; font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Times New Roman; } div.Section1 { page: Section1; } I have been asked to do a rebuild on friends Dell laptop, unfortunately the guy who had it before me formatted the drive so I cannot create a recovery disk set &  owner has lost the recovery disk set I made her a few months ago. To make matters worse the guy who formatted it also managed to delete the recovery partition. The problem basically is that without the SATA drivers even though I can boot to a Vista disk I cannot access the hard drive as it keeps asking for the sata drive. I have tried the Dell support web site but that was no help as I have tried ALL the drivers available there to no avail & a call to them by the owner was a waste of time. I can get a replacement set from Dell but they don't really like to supply them & to be honest I would rather not have to wait weeks for them to get here before I can get the machine running again. Any ideas folks?

What do you know about the Mebroot trojan, also known as Sinowal?

I did a clean Windows install on a brand new hard disk for a friend. But when transferring her files over, we discovered she had Mebroot on her old hard disk and thumb drives. AVG antivirus did not detest it at all! Symantec does detect it, but cannot remove it. After doing some searching, this is what I've found. It's a boot sector trojan that apparently takes an expert to remove?? 80% of antivirus software does not even detect it? It allows a backdoor into your computer which can steal any information, including your online banking information, and no antivirus program can remove it or protect against it?? Even a reformatting of the hard disk (or thumb drive) does not remove it??!
