Instructables got a nice write-up in SmartComputing here:http://www.smartcomputing.com/email.asp?emid=168188Plugged InJanuary 2008 Vol.19 Issue 1Page(s) 46-48 in print issueDIY Web SitesThink It, Learn It, Do It Instructables are step-by-step instructions that are accompanied by pictures and sometimes even video on anything and everything, from how to trigger green traffic lights to how to clean your sinuses to how to make a crossbow out of a pencil. This site is definitely all about having a good -- and sometimes mischievous -- time with all sorts of fun ideas. DIY projects from other sites can also be found here on occasion. Some of the most interesting categories are Art, Life, Offbeat, and Ride, although that by no means is the complete list. The Offbeat section is aptly named, so consider this fair warning: Some of the content there definitely meanders off the usual path.Members submit their ideas with visual aids and step-by-step instructions, and others can comment on their creations, ask questions, or make suggestions for improvements. It is free to sign up for an account; in addition to the aforementioned privileges, members can print instructions, post a question on the forum, message other members privately, and receive the weekly newsletter.Instructables also features contests, such as Launch It!, wherein contestants offer their best projectile creation. There is a new contest theme every so often, sometimes reflecting the current holiday season. Contests such as these bring out some of the wildest, most interesting designs you can find on the site.More news articles about Instructables here.

So I know this idea has been floating around for a while. I want to try to put this into action. However, in here I will be telling you guys what I plan to do... I know killerjackalope, =smart=, and others were doing this. This is only a proposal, in part with them...? Well, for the show. I can be one of the host. That's right, only one. Along with a few 'regulars' and the Instructables crew. Then, we'd let the viewers, and community do this, too. We'd get everyone to videotape a small portion, or segment, of the show. Then get someone, with nice video editing skills, to blend it all together. So tell me what you think?Eric said yes. We are allowed to move forward.Everyday you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, im me at mg0930mg on aim, or reach me on skype at mikeyg0930Where are the meetings held? Skype. Download it hereWhens the next meeting? or meeting schedule? On Wendsday, 6 p.m. est on skype. The one after will be on Friday, 7 p.m. est. Email me if you can't make it.Will the podcast be weekly or monthly? It will most likely be monthly, for now. Maybe, we can have our first one out near Christmas time.Who minds if their face is on camera? W'burg.Who can help edit this? No one?Know anyone who wants to help? Tell them.

Don't you hate it, when you've finished building something outside and you've forgotten your camera? Can't wait to publish an instructable when you're out and about, and have no access to a computer? Both of these have happened to me, and I had a good idea. I propose an iPhone app for instructables. This app would be better than browsing on your internet browser on the iPhone because it would be made for the iPhone screen rather than for a 16:9 monitor. I think that it should have at least the following features: * Offline Instructable Editor * Instructable uploader * Online instructable browser * User page, in which you can check comments and edit your profile etc. * Onboard instructable saver - instead of having to go online and browse the site to find the instructable again, the app could have, for example, 2MB of allocated memory in which to save one or more simple pdf files or similar of instructables, which may be viewed at any time, even when the internet connection is faulty. I truly believe that this has potential, and I just hope that the admins see this. I don't have the means, funds or time to make this app but hopefully somebody does. Feel free to post any more ideas, as this would be a community app and I'd like it to be suitable for as many people as possible.

I believe there should be an instructables app for the ipod touch/ iphone. The app would be a simplified version of the website; users could veiw featured ibles, guides, contests, and their "You" page. Iphone users could make and publish and entire ible because of the camera. Users could also use the "search" bar(obviously). If any of you have any ideas or suggestions post them when you comment below. If enough people comment in favor of this idea we may be able to make it happen. To "sign" this "petition" just comment on this forum saying that you agree with this idea. At this time you can also add any ideas to improve this app.

Eric and I will be at SXSW Interactive from March 7-11 in Austin, TX. If you're there too, come find us for some Robot stickers! No table or booth - we're just there to schmooze and have fun. We're bringing some neat toys, like a kinetic chain sculpture and Potenco's human power generator (used with the OLPC).We'll be attending as many of the geek parties as we can; tell us which you'd recommend. Right now the tentative plan is Saturday: Bike Hugger Beer & BBQ, Dorkbot, Opening Party, and one of the afterparties TBD.Sunday: Pre-party, PopSci.com after-party, and the Etsy/Threadless/Timbuk2/Moo People Powered Party.Monday: The Plutopia EFF shindig, Next New Networks party, plus the Facebook party primarily to hear BT.(Any suggestions? We like interesting people, blinky lights, fun art, and dancing to electronic music.)Come see us at the PopSci.com awards after-party on Sunday night, and help us make LED Floaties!

If you have revised a project that you wrote an Instructable for, is it common practice to update the instructable or write a new one? My changes are not really full 2.0 level, but they are a significant new step. I have an Arduino based project, and I've pulled out the relatively expensive Arduino and replaced it with a dollar ATtiny85.

I am getting really bored in these loooooonnnnnnnggggggggg summer vacations and found no good instructables to make :( . So please can anyone suggest some good instructables? Some good, easy and cheap instructables related to technology, but not as simple as led throwies. Those related to mechanics would also be appreciated.

Here's an idea I thought of a few weeks ago: Subscribing to Users on Instructables. It will be exactly like YouTube kind of, except you can see the New Instructables/ Slideshows/ Videos any of the users you subscribed to posted.Picture 1) This will be on each users page. Obviously the button will not be like that, it will be like the buttons on Instructables, gray and orange words.Picture 2) Next to Submit, it will say "Subscriptions v" (v is the little arrow), and when you hover over it, it will say New Instructables, New Slideshows, New Videos.Picture 3) Couldn't make my own, so I used YouTube. It won't be like this, but it will be close. See the New Videos/ Instructables/ Slideshows? Click on any, and it shows any of those from any user you are subscribed to. And when you click their user name, it shows all the new stuff from them. See how right now in the picture it just shows a video? Exact same thing will be for the Instructables and Slideshows, so they won't have a video time under it unless it is a video. It shows the date it was posted, the views, the ratings, the usual. If you have any suggestions, please comment! Thanks!NOTE.Click the i in the picture to see it full size.

Dear Fellow Forum Readers, A while ago, I posted an idea/request asking about the possibility of making the names of Instructable PDF files conform to a certain standard for ease of filing. I found my own best solution. If anyone can use this idea, please do! What this project does is to add symbols to the titles of instructables which indicate awards and featured status for each downloaded Instructable. I am using a Mac and purchased the app "A Better Finder Rename 9". Within a parent folder entitled 'Instructables Downloads' I created a group of folders with the symbols corresponding to the featured/awards symbols of the given Instructables. For example, if there is one star for an Instructable, I designate that this way: (*). If there is a star and a goblet, it is designated like this: (*+). I make a folder for each of the combinations of stars and goblets and then as I download (I download many at a time) I just save them to these folders. Then afterwards, I use "A Better Finder Rename" to add the designations as a suffix to the Instructable titles. When I want to quickly pick out the most awarded Instructable out of several options for a given project, I can see right away which one is most recognized as excellent. Finally, I made a master Instructables folder with broad catagories within which to sort my downloads, e.g. Electronics & Computer Instructables, Maker & Prototyping Instructables, Gardening & Homesteading Instructables, etc. Now I have a nice library for portability and offline use! Will many people want this? I doubt it. But it makes my substantial collection easy to go through and saves time when I want to look for recognized excellence among many choices of projects. Besides, it's fun and 'therapeutic' for me to idly sort, rename and file these great projects on a lazy afternoon (not enough of those!). Helps me mull what I'll work on next, too. :-) TN
