RFID questions

I am wanting to create a fun RFID / NFC device that will detect when different people walk into a room. We all have individual RFID door tags to open a door so I was wondering what the range was on RFID, would the person need to tap their fob or is RFID strong enough to detect if somebody is just carrying the fob in their pocket? If the RFID isn't strong enough, could I use something in their phone to detect them? Bluetooth maybe? Everybody has an iPhone, could I detect something on that? Any thoughts? Thanks. Phil

RFID antenna question. Answered

How sensitive is RFID functionality to the length of its antenna? Specifically, if I had an RFID like this one, cut the antenna and then resoldered it, would the loss in antenna length (I'm guessing about half an inch) affect the workings of the device?

RFID READER HELP

Hello, can anyone help me design an RFID reader which can tell me when something is missing. I would like to build a reader for my file cabinet. I know this is hard but the reader will have to keep reading the files by maybe pinging and when a file is missing from the cabinet an LED will light up and maybe a small readout telling me what file is gone. Cabinet is small only 300mm so if anything is more than 300mm away from the reader it will light up. Can anyone help?

Arduino with RFID MFRC522

Hi, I need your help with Arduino and RFID MRC522. I need a program that reads the card blocks and stores them in an array, reads the UID of the card and saves it in a variable, then instead, the opposite direction, that is, write the card blocks with values in an array and write to the UID of the card with a code contained in a variable .. I hope for your help because I'm desperate with a school project to be urgent, sorry, unfortunately I do not speak English and I had to rely on google translator.

Arduino and a RFID lock? Answered

I am trying to get the arduino to know when a certain RFID tag has been read.(so it can be used in a lock application) I tried taking the code array variable and seeing if it was equal to the the what showed up in the serial monitor window with the program on the arduino playground page.  But it came up with the error "exponent has no digits" .  So what would I have to use so that the arduino can interpret the "code" array and see if it is equal to a certain tag? I know that there are already door lock programs out there, but I like to know how programs work so I can learn from them and apply that to future projects. Thanks in Advance! AI

RFID tag ideas

I've got a handful of RI-TRP-DR2B 32-mm Glass Transponders...Don't really know what to do with them so I figured I'd ask around here.  I've attached a picture and the data sheet for this item.  Has anyone worked with these or similar devices before?  Also, any recommendations for a reader/writer (preferably something that'd work with a Raspberry Pi or Arduino)?  They operate on 134.2 kHz. Thank you.

RFID query: Programming RFID lock to accept "pre-existing" RFID chips?

I have no prior programming skills, and only a basic understanding of RFID technology. As my initiation to Arduino programming, I would like to build an RFID door lock/catch. I know you can buy RFID tags to program the system to accept, but can you also program the reader to accept other items you may have with an RFID chip? I'm not sure what other components might be in place to prevent that from functioning. Disney has RFID chip embedded bracelets, for instance which are used for a variety of things around the park.  They way I imagine the programming is that the reader reads an RFID and then records that ID to accept? Is there much more to that? Apologies for my ignorance at this point. Thanks to anyone for their clarification!

How to emulate a RFID key, cheaply?

I've gotten into this nasty little habit of locking my keys in my apartment (twice this month). It costs me 20 bucks to get back in! We have a RFID key which costs 50 bucks to get a copy of!, There is no code on the back of it either. So, I figure, I'm mechanically inclined, I know how to solder, I can read electrical schematics, I understand diodes, caps, variable resistors, resistors, switches, leds, grounds...so on and so forth. I by no means understand it all. Anyways, I am rambling. How could I build a cheap (under 50) key emulator? Just to keep in the Jeep for when this happens again

Will mylar block RFID signals? Answered

I have an idea for a small leather work project that would utilize mylar film as an RFID signal blocker.  I have tried to research the effectiveness of mylar film for this purpose and the consensus opinion seems to be a resounding "Yes, No and Maybe." If anyone can point me to an authoritative source or has personal information relating to this, I would be most appreciative. Thanks Addendum: Much as I anticipated, you have posted a host of excellent answers that gave me a lot of information I hadn't yet considered. For my part, I should have included more information concerning my project in my question. The Skinnerz response reminded me that I have some scraps of fine mesh stainless steel screen termite shield and I will give that a try rather than mylar for my wallet and passport case.

RFID BLOCKING, MADE SIMPLE

I have seen RFID wallets, sleeves, and cards.  I like the IDEA of RFID blocking cards that you sandwich your credit cards between. So, my question is thus... If I had two cards made of 21 gauge aluminum and placed them on in the last pocket on both sides of my wallet, would this block the RFID scanners?  If not, then what would it take? What just programming some RFID chips and put them in my wallet to eff with the scanners?  I know there are things like this in the market, but very over priced.  I have contacts in the RFID scanning and deployment world, so it would not be hard for my to get my hands on this stuff. What do you all think!?

RFID/NFC computer lock?

I am curious if any of you have an idea for something that could detect a bracelet from 5-10 feet and when it leaves, issue a sleep command to a computer.  I think it would be relatively easy to issue the command from an arduino, but I'm not very sure on which tags and readers to use for the right range.  The idea would be for the computer to automatically sleep/lock when you leave the room.  So what frequencies/types of tags and readers should I look into that will offer a decent range, that is close enough not to loose connection reaching across the desk or walking a few feet across the room, but won't work from a few rooms down the hall, and will interface well with an arduino.

Arduino pro micro RFID and servo

I've successfully implemented Door Unlock system described in this tutorial. At first I used Arduino Uno and RFID RC522 Reader and MG90S Micro servo. When I used Arduino Uno with Arduino Pro Micro for arduino ATmega32U4 5V/16MHz, the RFID reader stops wirking after pluging the servo. Since Arduino Pro Micro have only 5v output, I used resistors to downgrade 5v to 3v in order to poser the RFID reader. I used same output 'vcc' to select 5v for the servo and 3v converted to the reader. The problem is that each component woks perfectly independent each other, however, when I place them together they stop working.

RFID - Metal blocking receiver issues?

Please can anyone advise? So we've built a prototype that detects when a bottle is opened And triggers a software response. We need to build the real thing next. The prototype: We've used a small passive UHF RFID tag mounted on the lid of the bottle, hidden under foil. When the bottle is opened this tag pops out and can be sensed. We have a long range RFID scanner that recognised the appearance of the tag and send the signal onwards. This currently works ok at a Distance of around two meters. Problems with the prototype: The action of revealing the tag is not very reliable. Currently we've just experimented with various pieces of tape and foil attached to the tag and bottle. We need to develop something reliable that could be applied to a couple of hundred bottles. The range is a bit shorter than we'd hoped as well - ideally we need the range to be over 5 meters. Our reader has the option of adding multiple aerials though which may help. And perhaps we could have a set of readers linked It's not necessary to use RFID if some other way of detecting when the bottle has been opened could be used instead. The reason we chose RFID is that the bottle doesn't need anything very large added to it. We are trying to sell these things after all. We really could do with someone who can help make this system more reliable Both by helping us with improving the mechanism for revealing the tag and increasing the RFID sensing range

Interfacing the arduino with the parallax RFID reader? Answered

I want to interface the parallax RFID reader with the arduino.  I have done some research and found some programs, but I can't quite understand what is going on it the programs.  Here is one that I found on the arduino playground: www.arduino.cc/playground/Learning/PRFID I couldn't paste the code, because when I did it just went on one line, but the program I looked is the first one. The questions I have are: char code[10] ---- what does the 10 mean? Also how does the program read each byte individually, and then combine them into the whole byte string for the rfid tag. I am just learning about using serial with the arduino so not much in the program made sense to me and the programs didn't say how they worked. Thanks in advance!

How to make a RFID bracelet for a travel card (Oyster card)?

Im trying to make a bracelet which incorporates my London Oyster Card (RFID travel card) so i can just swipe my wrist and not faff about with wallets or pockets etc but I am having a few issues. The basic design is going to be simple and effective. I will have a length of regular guage wire around the wrist, secured by a single wire connector/ terminal block (see photo). It will prob be a earth wire, as it is a fancy colour. The RFID will be placed inside the plastic connector and hot glued end end to secure it and keep out the elements. The RFID's aeriel wire will be inside the earth wire heatshrink, it will be a loop of wire and can be as thick as it needs to be. I keep having problems though, I cant get the chip out of the card in one piece. I have been using nail varnish remover but with mixed results.   When/if I do get the RFID chip out of the card, i will need to solder a new aerial and I am unsure about the process. Does the length/gauge of wire matter for the function of the RFID? im thinking about its frequency. Will it need to be ceramic covered wire to avoid shorts? Has anyone put a contactless travel card into other things? Or has any experience dealing with this sort of area? I would very much appreciate any help or advice.

Arduino: HELP: How to perform action if two rfid tag UIDs have been detected?

I'm using an rfid-rc522 and I want to print to the serial a string of text if two rfid tags have been read in a given time period. Essentially this: 1.
