Satellite images.

Does anybody know where i can get highly detailed satellite images? Higher than google. Google has this thing that you can pay $20 to get better quality, but to me that seems like a rip off. Anyone know any places to get better pictures? Thanks

DTH satellite receiver problem

I have a DTH satellite receiver which has a burnt SMPS power supply (image attached). I replaced the burnt components but again when powered with 220V ac supply to test the output voltages the same components burnt again within a few seconds. I could not figure out what is the actual faulty part. If anyone has any suggestion please feel free to answer. My second problem is the satellite receiver board (image attached) has 6 pins for power connection but I could not figure out what voltage is to be applied to which pin. So I was unable to use a separate power supply for the receiver board. The part number can be seen from the image itself. Please look at the receiver board and help me if anyone has any idea about this board. I tried searching in google with the part number but could not find the same board. Please help me. Any suggestion is welcome. Satellite receiver: Hicway ali M3328C(10039)-11

Watch out for falling satellites

Watch out for falling satellitesWith no one at the wheel, should we be worried about the large US spy satellite now headed for a crash landing?US spy satellite 193 is predicted to de-orbit less than gracefully in Feburary or early March. The chances of it actually hitting a populated area are exceedingly small, but perhaps you can catch a few micrograms of it using Kiteman's How to catch a star Instructable. What is happening? An out-of-control US spy satellite will crash to Earth in the coming months, government officials say. The satellite is large enough that remnants are likely to survive atmospheric re-entry and strike the Earth, sometime in late February or early March, says Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council. Is that normal?"This is relatively routine in that satellites de-orbit all the time," says Johndroe. Pieces of uncontrolled debris heavier than two tonnes -- mostly discarded rocket stages -- crash to Earth as often as once every three weeks, says Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer and launch observer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Many discarded pieces retain some power, so that controllers on Earth can guide them to a point far from human habitation, usually using a final dive into an ocean. In 2001, Russian space officials broke up the old Mir space station in this way over the South Pacific. That's not the case for this US one, however."Obviously, we want to take a look at the potential for it to land in a populated area," says Johndroe. What are the chances of it crashing through my roof?Exceedingly slim, says McDowell. Remember that some 70% of the Earth is water, and most lands are void of people. "There is no reason for people to get alarmed about it," he says.According to the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office, there have been no confirmed instances of serious property damage or injury caused by crashing debris in 40 years.

How would I go about creating a device that will move on its x and z axis according to an input degree?

I am looking to set up a satellite on my roof and am hoping to be able to control it from my room. For now I just need to create a base that can move on its x axis and later the z axis. I can understand for the first part I would need a motor but have no idea on how to interface it with the ability to recognise the compass degree it is facing. For the second part, I believe I may want a hydraulic arm that is hinged to the base (which the satellite lies on) but again have little idea on how to interface it with the ability to detect the angle it is pointed at. My final hurdle is to be able to control all of this. This may well be ambitious when i have little experience with motors and interface but it's something I want to do.

What do you think about this dish as a WiFi signal booster? Answered

Hello everybody, I am in the process of setting up wireless internet at home, but am still a complete novice in this field. I have just bought a ZyXEL G-202 USB wireless adapter and I am making an antenna of sorts following some instructables as we speak. On my laptop I usually get 1-2 stripes at most when it comes to signal strength, so I was planning to do some piggybacking with my desktop. :) (hey, internet is not cheap here in the Balkans. :P) Anyway, I live in the capital where we have many Cafes and institutions providing free wireless, so why not make the most of it, it's not illegal here. :) The only problem is, I live in an block of flats; so many surrounding buildings tend to block and corrupt the signal. For instance, in my room (using an Acer laptop with built-in wireless) I get a list of 5-6 free (read: unsecured) APs, but the signal is so weak, it's good for nothing. :( Now, having examined my options, I was planning to make an antenna and put it on the roof of the building. But, when I climbed to the top, I found this old abandoned satellite dish SEE PHOTO (I asked around the building and nobody knows who it belongs to. Additionally, it's very run down as you can see, and the cables are torn out, so I was planning on claiming it. :p). Now, my questions are: 1. Can anyone tell me if it's a good idea to use this dish as an antenna, if I weather proof my USB receiver and mount it on the focal point of the dish? (Line of sight (aerial) distance from it to the nearest free wifi hotspot is approx. 600 meters) 2. Is there a possibility that my USB will get too hot, maybe catch fire, because of the signal boost? (Maybe this is a dumb question, but I really don't know much about these things) 3. Finally, I would also need an advice in regard to the cables needed. I already downloaded the "How to extend your USB using UTP" instructable, but since the cable should be about 60 meters long, is there a way to make it not loose too much signal? Thank you all for reading this, and thank you in advance for your advice. Any type of help is welcomed. :)

Would I be able to extend an amplified antenna's range with a satellite dish?

Hi all, I have a small portable T.V. that will only work when tethered to a converter box. I noticed that when I attached a rabbit ear antenna to the "TV OUT" port on the box, I was able to get signal from the box wirelessly from a few feet away. I had a crazy idea that if I bought an amplified antenna, replaced the LNB on a satellite dish with it, and aimed it at the satellite closest to Earth, I would be able to have the converter box signal bounce back to the T.V. Is this even possible?

So I'm trying to find the focal point of a satellite dish.

The dish is oval, and I am not sure if it is parabolic/spherical. Here is a picture, with measurements: http://s753.photobucket.com/albums/xx180/EternityTransfer/ I'm not too sure how this dish focuses, as it seems that vertical waves will be focussed differently to horizontal ones, due to the oval shape and that the depths are different depending on which axis is measured. I ideally want to make a parabolic microphone from this dish. There seems to be a focal point about 60cm from directly above the center of the dish, but when viewed from very off-centre angles, the dish seem to have other points too. How would I determine the "optimal" one? It is coated in a thin layer of aluminium foil, which I put on to reflect light when finding the focal point. Unfortunately there are no serial/part numbers, and the dish is missing its feed horn and support so I can't approximate the focal point form there or from datasheet(s). Any help would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: Oh and the dish originates in South Africa, and is stamped with a number which looks like a date of manufacture: 19950610. Googling the number yielded no results so its probably a date.

I need a hardware volume leveller/normalizer for analog audio from cable box to tv. (schematic or product)? Answered

Searching around I've found several shareware software programs - installing an extra computer for this task isn't an option. Ibles doesnt seem to have anything like this... I'm thinking an arduino, a sneaky sketch, and an lm-series stereo volume regulator. All the hardware I've seen dies a quick death - presumably the way of the electric car - too much lobbying from advertising industry to stop them hitting store shelves. Frankly, I think its beyond un-ethical. In my particular situation, its potentially dangerous.

How can I boost satellite internet signal for laptop housed in building located fair distance from dish

Hello. First time question-poser. I need really basic information (no freaky-tech-talk, please). How do I summarize? Dial-up, broadband through cell phone provider, DSL ( although discovered our location is too far out), and now satellite internet through Hughesnet. Iffy at best. Here is my dilemma: I need to boost the satellite internet signal for my laptop that will be located in my new handy-dandy office (when it is finallly constructed: a month or so) on the back of the property? Haven't measured the distance but more than a hop, skip, and jump. More like 100 hops, skips, and jumps. May have old Dish dish as was a suggestion on a page that I can't get back to now that I am officially a member, thank you very much. I know way more about this internet thing than I want and not enough to help my situation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have an old Toshiba satellite laptop with a bad motherboard; is there anything I can do with it?

The original problem was that the laptop wasn't getting power. The shop I took it to said it was the motherboard and that it wasn't worth the price of a replacement. So, I'm not 100% positive that this is the actual problem, since i declined repair, but that's what they said. Everything else is in good working condition as far as I know (including the power supply and battery--we tested those). I'm now running snow leopard on a macbook--I was hoping that the screen might be turned into an external monitor without using the motherboard, but i've seen all the answers about needing a controller and all, so I don't expect that. Still, getting any use from this thing would be great. Any ideas?
