Algae oil

I've been reading about biodiesel and about using vegitable oil from algae. It would seem that per acre you can produce 250 times as much vegitable oil using algae than soy beans. I've been looking into the necessary parts for a very small scale demonstration project, including production, harvesting, drying and converting oil into diesel, but I'm having problems finding information of oil extraction. There are some very large oil extractors using screw and expeller. Even a very small one would cost several thousand dollars and since it is made for seeds I'm not sure it would work with algae. Does anyone here know about oil extraction process and how it can be scaled down and used with algae? The system I envision would only take the first pass in extracting oil, about 70%. From what I've been reading it is possible to get another 25% but requires some very nasty chemicals. Also, taking only that first press, the leftovers (refered to as "oil cake") makes for an excellent animal feed. After extracting that last 25% the leftovers are no longer suitable because of the toxic chemicals used. I'd rather have the 70% and animal feed and not have to bother with some very elaborate procedures for handling toxic chemicals. Anyone else interested in helping to put together a demo project like this? I already have resources on converting voil to biodiesel. Like I said, I'm mostly looking for information on extracting the oil. Thanks

Do anyone have any information on growing and processing algae at home for bio fuel??

I have  been researching online  ways to  produce  bio fuel from algae at home. I have found  numerous ideas and was  wondering   if anyone has  tried to actual   put  it to work? I have been looking at what scale a person would need to produce 75 Gallon a month . I have seen   several calculations but they  vary a great  deal.

Algae biofuel oil refining?

I have long been a fan of the idea of renewable energy from algae colonies, but I have yet to find any information on actually refining the oil produced with the algae.  I am well aware of how to remove the oil, however at that point it is just an organic crude.  Is their a process to refine it to a more diesel or gasoline-like state, or is it efficient enough to run an engine on the crude.  I am currently growing a reasonable algae colony and would appreciate assistance in doing something with the algae after it is grown.

electronic speed control based emp?

Is it posible to use a 20 amp 8 khz esc to power an emp? as far as why, the induction pipe from origin clear i found out runs at 4.8v 20 amps and 2-4 khz. it would be amazing to have my own low scale model of their machines for research and testing. unfortunately my research funding is slim to none otherwise i would try this my self .  if anyone has a good esc that they could try this i would love to see the results. i cant im broke, therefore forced to live vicariously through others

how do you extract oil from algae ?

Well been reading that algae is a renewable fuel but I can't see how ? So how do you get the oil that is discussed out of the algae? Is it one of these non sustainable horribly expensive and hideous to the environment jobbies that we are told will save the world?

How can I turn algae into some sort of a biofuel?

I saw the instructable on the algae bio reactor. I then decided to use that as my Marine Biology final project but I also wanted to one up the instructable and put in my thesis that I would turn the algae into a bio fuel. How can I make this possible. Please help my grade depends on this.

How can I extract Peppermint (or another mint plant)'s oil?

I hear oil from algae is extracted by drying it, then soaking it in alcohol to dissolve the extract, then straining it and evaporating the alcohol. I might start experimenting with that, but any suggestions?

Are carbon neutral fuels good for the environment? Answered

I'm sort of confused about carbon neutrality and it's impact on our environment. I feel like I'm over thinking it, but could someone explain to me what exactly makes a carbon neutral fuel clean? If it's clean burning at all? I'm interested in making biofuels specifically algae fuel, and this is a term that keeps popping up.

Compressing home made biogas

Hi I'm working on a project where we are using an anaerobic digester along with a series of gas scrubbers that yields biogas containing roughly 80% methane (ch4) and 20% oxygen. I know that this proportion of methane is well above the upper explosive limit of methane (about 15% methane by volume) but the presence of that much oxygen makes me nervous.  Am I going to have trouble compressing this gas mixture without blowing a new hole in my head? I am planning on compressing the purified biogas to about 20psi at between 60-80 degrees farenheight and in a respectably blast proof gas container.  please help! (Trying to help our planet!)

A source for a small Diesel engine?

I'm doing a science fair project about algae biofuels, and was looking for a small, tabletop, less then 70 lb diesel engine. Oh, and cheap would be nice too :D.

CO2 extraction, SFE build ideas?

I'm wanting to build a SFE co2 extraction "plant" home or garage unit...i am trying to use it with essential oil extraction projects...especially with cedarwood ( i have a successful steam distillation business, distilling and fractionating cedarwood oil and blending it with various carriers to provide my cedar based pesticides and lawn care products)...but i want to increase efficiency and potency, etc. the USDA did testing with cedar and co2 SFE and had great success. i am trying to build a unit...many ideas out there...but very few clear details, videos, pictures, etc... i want to use for cedar, algae, kelp, bamboo, etc....various essential oil products... the sad thing is i can find vague info from either large commercial units or from cannabis users... IDEA's ?!?!?!?!?
