RE CHROMING ZINC ALUMINIUM

I am looking for info on how to restore zinc aluminum car parts . like the automobile horns they tend to oxidize AND do not stand up to the Chemical's when re chroming. I be-leave that there is a process that will give them, a coating that can be used that will take the chroming posses   Regards John .

Laser cutting.

Hello (excuse my English really bad I'm Belgian and French) I would like to cut aluminum sheet of + - 5 mm thick and also cut paper without "burning the edges" I would like to know what kind of "laser head" the cheapest possible exists and what would be even better, whether this kind of "laser head" is recovering ... I was thinking of a DVD laser burner but, even though I I'm as good at DIY as an elephant is good at skydiving, I guess a DVD burner will not cut aluminum ... A big thank-you

where can i buy a fine mesh screen for separating aluminium powder? Answered

hello, i have discovered my ball mill with its large (2cm) grinding media, cant mill 100% of my aluminium powder, however it does mill roughly 50% after 8 hours, so i want to know where i can find a super thin aluminium mesh flake separator  which i can periodically sift out my powder, from the powder /flake mixture. the powder size i am looking to sift, is sufficient for use in thermite and flash powder, essentially just standard super fine aluminium powder that stains whatever it touches silvery. i have seen one before for sale on diversehobbies before, but now its gone, and i cant find one anywhere else. does anyone here know where i can find one online?

Is aluminium lose its electrical conductivity when it is oxidised ? Answered

I have a soil moisture probe that is generally use for gardening projects. So I read some articles that tell about oxidation of this probes in a week. I wanna make soil moisture sensors that I can use it in my experiments and you know inexpensiveness is important rule of DIY :). I planned to use aluminium plates as resesitive soil moisture sensor but I have still some doubt that oxidation of aluminium affects to conductivity or not ?  I will use the sensors for a year or at least 7-8 months. So I worry that couldn't measure soil moisture properly.

Is there a readily available alternative to sulphuric acid as the electolyte when anodising aluminium?

 I'm trying to anodise aluminium at home and have managed it once, dying the aluminium afterwards in ink to get pretty colours.  Sulphuric acid is the electrolyte we used, but it is virtually impossible to get hold off, is there anything else which could be used instead

Is it possible to prevent the chemical reaction that occurs when a tin is boiled in an aluminium pot?

When a tin is boiled in an aluminium pot a chemical reaction takes place that creates a grey film in the pot. This can be removed with some very vigorous scrubbing with steel wool - it takes hours! Can the chemical reaction be prevented or is there another reaction that can be created that will remove the grey film?

Computer PSU wire question? Answered

Hi all, I want to turn an old computer PSU into a lab bench PSU.  After cutting all the connectors at the end of the cables, I've noticed that some of the common (black) wires were made of copper, while some of them were made of nickel \ aluminum (Silverish). The same is true for the +5V (red) cables. It's not the first PSU I noticed that had the different materials, and I was wondering: 1) Why are there two different kinds of wire? 2) Is it OK to ignore the wire material and just splice all the blacks together, and all the reds together? Is this a mass change or disturbed local gravity? Answered

I dropped a single 6mm dia steel ball down a 3/8 copper tube 1.29m (50.75 in) long, it took less than 1 sec to pop out the other end. I then dropped a string of 5 X neo disc magnets, 5mm dia x 3mm thick, down the same tube and it floated down taking 7 seconds to pop out the other side. I tried the same experiment with an aluminium tube and observed the same results. What is causing this phenomenon? Could it be magnetic eddy currents in non ferrous material? Has the mass of the neo mags been changed or is it a local gravitational disturbance?

Roberts Clock Radio - dimmer - Model CRD 26

Clock working fine except that when it is dark there is no time displayed and it is obvious that the dimmer is sensitive.Open up the clock by removing four tiny posidrive screws and carefully prising the top and bottom apart. ( preferably with a plastic prising tool to avoid damaging it). Disconnect the supply to clock. Small white two pin plug in the motherboard attached to dimmer. Remove plug and short out (connect together) the two pins that it plugs into. For a simple repair push some aluminium foil trimmed to size (like the thickness of aluminium foil on shop bought mice pies) between them. This will eliminate the dimmer and allow the time to be displayed in the dark. unaffected by the dimmer.. OR simply snip the red and black wires and join them together.These clocks cost about £60.00 so it's worth doing.

I am designing a gamma Stirling engine (this type) and I am unsure how long the piston should be and how long its stroke length should be the specs for the cylinder and piston pipes are below. The pipe for the cylinder is stainless steel. Wall thickness: 1.56mm Outer diameter: 31.7mm Inner diameter: 28.6 Length: 200mm (can be cut smaller) (Stainless steel cap will be welded to one end, the other end where the shaft comes out will be plugged with this nylon/graphite stuff) The pipe for the displacer piston is aluminium pipe.  Wall thickness: 1mm Outer diameter: 27.88mm Inner diameter: 25.88mm Length: ? (Two aluminium plugs will be used to seal its ends) How long should the piston, cylinder and stroke lengths be based on the specs?

Electrolytic Capacitor types/ uses? Answered

About electrolytic (aluminium) capacitors..... what do the low ESR ones do that normal ones don't? And how come they have these capacitors in bipolar types, but not all are bipolar? Is it because of the size/cost? And lastly, can you make an LC circuit with any electrolytic capacitor?                                                                                                             Many thanks P.S: In which frequency range are LC resonant ciruits best used? Cos I heard that lower/higher than a specific point, they become impractical or something....

I am currently in the finnishing stages of a new aluminium print nozzle for 3D printers. Of course I would like to share my project here soon but I also would like to see if it has any commercial value. I would only be able to make a very small amount of them each month and the hours I have to spend in my workshop for it would not be justified by any price. So if someone would have an interest to mass produce this nozzle what would be the correct type of license to choose from when publishing the Instructable?

I want to make a CNC machine but I don't have the tools or access to tools that I'd like to make one,  all I have is a simple drill press, a little stand-alone vice that I can use on it, calipers, and micrometers. What I want to know is how can I, limited tools only (I hope), precisely drill (and possibly tap, I do have a tap set) a bunch of holes in aluminium angle/channel, acrylic, and MDF?

Has anyone made there own smelting furnace and how did you do it?

I just need one to start my own mini casting house (my garage to be exact). I want to run it on gas and be hot enought to melt copper, brass , and aluminium. but only on a small scale to make castings for projects i have in mind. I know how the concept works but does anyone know any good tips eg what materials, how hot do it need to go, safety, and anyone how has expience in castings, making them or both.

Will a glued acrylic structure hold for a 3d printer ?

Hi,  I'm designing a delta style 3d printer from scratch while trying to use only laser cut acrylic sheets and aluminium extrusions. The entire design is based on the T Bolt construction idea. But there are a few parts that simply need to be glued together. I'm trying to avoid using such joints in load bearing areas but there are a few areas where this is becoming difficult such as the carriage. I'd like to know if i can safely glue the laser cut parts together with out the entire thing falling apart and if yes what kind of glue should I look for? Blckthng

Help converting a Greenlite LED light Bulb to DC power?

I have a GreenLite LED bulb that I took apart and cannot for the life of me figure out how to power it via DC without blowing it up. There are 21 LED's on an Aluminium plate, after mapping out the traces there are 3 series of 7 LED's with it running at 43.9-44.0 Volts. So I figure thats 6.2V per LED but everywhere I read White should be 3.0-3.2V  I cannot for the life of me figure out the current and voltage to provide to them without ruining them. Here is some pictures of the whole thing with the board that converts from AC to DC.  the 1,2, and 3's are me just labeling the mapping of the series.

Metal to Metal Sealant? Answered

Hello Everyone, I want to screw two parts of aluminium 2014 together ..... one is a hollow cube with at-least 5 mm shell width without the top face and one is it's cap/metal sheet with 3 mm height with holes for two m12 to 8mm pneumatic fittings through which pipes will be connected... it is actually a water block ,cooling a part of my next project.. so i want to ask which kind of adhesive or gasket should i use in between them while screwing those two pieces together so that water or any other coolant doesn't leaks from the block and damages the electronic components. A non-native English speaker here, please ignore grammatical mistakes. :)

How make a waterbird (pumpabike)

I am an Engineering science student doing my fifth year at Technology University in Vietnam. Part of our studies involves a final year project, and I have selected one on building a water craft similar in principle to the waterbird. Part of this project will primarily involve modelling this craft, how it works, simulation operation, structure analysis. Ultimately we will build a full size craft and test the design. However, some problems in structure and operating priciples which i don't understand, such as: - Properties spring? - Why they choose NACA 63-412? - time of a cycle action (jump down--> jump up) and amplitude ( only consider rear wing)? - properties aluminium used? Thermal insulation/cover for heating water bottle

I am building a water bottle that can heat water inside up to 80 degree Celsius for my engineering project. The design of the bottle is as follows:1. an aluminium or steel flask2. heating coil at the bottom of the flask(for heating)3. battery and circuit for the heating coil is located below the heating coil.I want to design a cover such that a person can hold the bottle when the water is hot. Also, i want to protect the circuit and battery at the bottom from the heating coil. How can I do this? (As of now, i was thinking to spray polyurethane foam around the bottle and use a plastic cover. Also, using a polystyrene board below the heating coil to separate it from circuit board/battery). Are there any other insulating materials that can be used? Considerations for cover and insulation: 1. Should be able to hold the bottle 2. Wash the bottle (hence, waterproof)

Needle valve on the cheap?

I need a needle valve or similar to adjust some pressure with more or less precision. Problems I am facing with commercial solutions at the moment: Needs to withstand about 300psi max pressure, must survive contionous exposure to concentrated ammonia vapour. I already wasted too much money on stainless steel valves claiming to be chemical proof and capable of 6000psi only to find out they use seals that turn to goo in the ammonia vapour and fail. And since the stuff is not really healthy, not easy to get, I would prefer something safer. Real problem is also that the thing should be able to allow for good flow rates when opened fully. Modes of operation: During the active cycle ammonia vapour needs to pass through an opening as big as possible while after that the flow must be shut off. The reverse cycle needs to be adjustable from closed to fully open with great detail to control the flow rate. Current ways to compensate: With a ball valves and extra piping I could seperate the two cycles so I won't have to bother with tiny openings but I would prefer to use only a single connection. With a bypass around the needle valve this could be accomplished better but still looks ugly. Materials out of the question: Copper, brass, normal seals based on rubber, nitrile or similar. Questions: I know fully sealed in.line valves exist for LPG system and similar. Are any of these magnetic valves available for the use with ammonia? And if so: Can they be operated with a neodymium magnet instead of the coil? Even stainless steel valves rated for chemical use and high pressure fail quickly on the seals. Is there anything available that does not use soft seals but for example aluminium instead? Thinking spray pump here... One way ball valve systems like used in simple spray pumps are a great thing. With some aluminium tubing I was able to make a simple valve that with some more attention to detail might even work. But of course there no other way of moving the ball then to use a magnet and with sufficient back pressure even neodymium ones fail to get the ball in the open position and keep it there. Now getting this combine with a needle... If, instead of the ball, a magnet in a teflon shell is used on a spindle I could spin a magnet around the outside to turn the valve with great precision. Has anyone already designed such a thing or would I have to start from scratch here?

idea for a simple and thin contact based sensor

Hello instructacles, I'm trying to build a simple contact-based set of sensors embedded in card board, paper or thin plastic sheets. I want to make a simple game for my kids that could detect/react to the presence/absence of some random items positionned on such a board? (empty glass bottle of coke, cereal box, shampoo bootle, you name it) Ideally i would use something like those books for kids where they have metallic threads "printed" on think plastic sheets and when you press them, it triggers a music. But i dont know how to print metal basically. don't really know how to get started. I was thinking of sewing conductive thread but i'm not really sure it would work. I have seen many attempts with aluminium foil (ex: https://www.instructables.com/id/Interactive-Art-With-Scratch-and-Makey-Makey/) but those are based on the fact that a human finger touches them (basically it uses the conductivity of skin), whereas in my game i was to use the weight of random objects from the house (in the 50g to 500g range typically) Any idea how i should get started ? thanks fourchu

So I'm trying to find the focal point of a satellite dish.

The dish is oval, and I am not sure if it is parabolic/spherical. Here is a picture, with measurements: http://s753.photobucket.com/albums/xx180/EternityTransfer/ I'm not too sure how this dish focuses, as it seems that vertical waves will be focussed differently to horizontal ones, due to the oval shape and that the depths are different depending on which axis is measured. I ideally want to make a parabolic microphone from this dish. There seems to be a focal point about 60cm from directly above the center of the dish, but when viewed from very off-centre angles, the dish seem to have other points too. How would I determine the "optimal" one? It is coated in a thin layer of aluminium foil, which I put on to reflect light when finding the focal point. Unfortunately there are no serial/part numbers, and the dish is missing its feed horn and support so I can't approximate the focal point form there or from datasheet(s). Any help would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: Oh and the dish originates in South Africa, and is stamped with a number which looks like a date of manufacture: 19950610. Googling the number yielded no results so its probably a date.

Where to get piezo igniters?

I have several lighters that I still like, either for their design or intended purpose. But over the years some failed to produce proper sparks with the piezo. For some I could salvage replacements from cheap lighters but not so much for the longer ones - the type to get your bbq or oven going. Here the wire from the igniter is in ne long piece going all the way from the piezo, through the long neck to the flame outlet. As the wires in those piezo igniters are aluminium it is next to impossible to attach a longer wire as usually there is no room for crimped connections and the isolation is a problem too. I also have one particular lighter that uses a slightly longer and thicker piezo igniter, the common ones don't work here as they are too short. Adding more support underneath is a no go as the shorter ones have less travel when activated. Last but not least is one lighter that requires a piezo with not just the little metal cap at the end but with a full metal body for the stationary part. The lighter in question does not work with standard types even if I add a little metal strip to make proper contact. Problem is simply put that like this the standard ones arch over and no spark comes out of the wire. So big question: Is there any supplier or Ebay shop where one could actuall see the various types of piezo igniters and order them in small or single quantities? So far I already struggled to find a source for the crappy standard ones and the only one I found wanted to charge $ 2.95 US per igniter plus postage. Sounded a bit greedy to me considering I can buy a complete lighter with it for around one single buck...

Making a magnetically suspended puppet. Answered

Hi, I'm thinking of making a magnetically suspended puppet. The idea is to make a puppet with a neodymium magnet in its head, and suspend it under an electromagnet, using a microcontroller to control the (DC) suspension current. To regulate the current, I'll probably use a D/A converter chip controlling an op-amp current sink, though I might use low-pass filtered PWM D/A conversion. I was thinking of a way of sensing the vertical height where I put a small chunk of metal in the head as well as the magnet, modulate the suspension field slightly at a high frequency (20 kHz?), and have an extra sense coil around the suspension coil. The idea is there would be an induced current in the sense coil from the modulation. This would change as the metal chunk came nearer to the centre of the coil. The signal from the sense coil would go through a high-pass-filter (to remove any low frequency components like mains), an op-amp rectifier, and then a low-pass filter, to produce a sense voltage. I might try both para- and dia- magnetic metals (iron and aluminium) to see which works better. I'm not entirely sure whether this will work, but I'd like to try it as it seems more elegant than using a hall effect sensor. The questions I have are: - How would I go about calculating roughly what length of wire and current I'm likely to need to suspend a given weight? Just a pointer to the relevant maths should be OK - don't feel like you to have to spell it out. - Does it make any difference whether the electromagnet is long or short along its central axis? I had an idea that the field from a longer coil might extend further below the magnet than one from a shorter one, but I don't know if this is so. - Does the method I've described for sensing the height sound practical? Windows - Monitor turning itself off after a few minutes.

Today I faced a problem that according to my internet research on the tablet is quite costly and annoying. First off my specs for the computer in the basic form: Windows 7 on 32GB of RAM with a decent Nvidia graphics card. Problem: After a few minutes of use the screen suddenly goes dark, like when going on standby but Windows itself still runs as normal. Quite often when it happens the screen brightness goes up to max right before the screen goes dark. Taking out the monitor cable and pluggin it back in usually gives the screen a few seconds until it goes dark again. Official solution as suggested in many forums and knowledgebases: Take check if the problem is the same when using a different video port on the card - checked and it was for me. Check it the fan is working as it could be the card shuts down from heat problems - checked and cleaned the heatsink while at it. Replace the graphics card if problem persists - Why the hell would I do that???? My solution: Take the card out. Clean it with some air, especially the heatsink and fan. If have and old school office using paper and pen you might have one of these fancy easers with a blue part that is really coarse and has some fine particles in it. They were used to remove ink or pen writings instead of pencil marks. If you don't have one take some aluminium foil and crunch it to a small ball. Use the eraser/foil to clean the contacts of the card. The gold plating should come out nice and shiny, if it still looks dull keep working it a few minutes longer. Just rub from one side to the other over the contacts. Once fully shiny remove all debris by blowing it off - pay special attention to the tiny gaps between the contacts!! If in doubt use an old toothbrush (dry and clean of course) to clean between the contacts, a cottum bud works too if you are desperate. Put the card back into the computer and you have a really high chance the monitor stays on and will work fine from now on.

At the moment i sell 70mw green laser modules (not pointer pens), carbon graphite rods 5/7/10mm wide at any length and from time to time i try and get rid off my liquid a$$ stink spray, though people tend not to buy that as postage is $6, and lastly long range, but very cheap, 433mhz receiver transmitter pairs . All of this , from within australia, i plan on selling things which are awsome, as well as generally inaccessible by many australians. Currently i intent to buy up 6v spark gap ignitors , identical to those on sparkfun, different coloured laser modules, titanium to weld to my MMO anode mesht cuts, more wireless receiver/transmitter pairs, though, this time, toggle/momentary ones, currently my ones are latching, i plan on buying small shockers, and lastly, Nitrates, Aluminium powder, sulfur, and all those chems which are so hard to find in australia. Also, i will start buying more, and in larger amounts, thermochromic pigment. I also plan on building DC-DC HV converters, for charging coil gun capacitors, (based on the instructable of the same name, once i get permission to use the schematic to base my design off to sell), small shocker modules (to make taser things from), Various oscillators, like flyback ones, 3D printing services and 1W regulated 808nm burner modules. Now, ever since i discovered the spark gap ignitor wholesaler, ive been thinking, "what else could i sell thats awsome and hard to come by?", but legal too, this is ebay after all. I would really like some help in finding things which arent especially expensive or big (im not buying stuff which costs like $100 a peice), but also things you would like to see sold in your local gadget stores. Really, just anything in this general catagory, stuff which is really awsome or very hard to get, either in australia or anywhere, but not illegal. like novelty gadgets, or things which do amazing things, such as mini spy cam bugs or something. I really need help, i know what kind of things I LIKE, and want, but not what others like and want. please help me out!

<5mm distance sensing, <100micron accuracy, GUI, RasPi or Arduino?

Hi there, I am trying to keep my hardware/ coding skills alive and spruce up my bicycle wheel truing stand. I need to figure out the required hardware + software for the following: I want to build a non-contact distance measurement sensor system and get the output "into" my computer for display in a graphical user interface. I know I could omit the latter step with going directly onto a mini-LCD screen, but trying to use this a learn-another-programming-language learning experience (I've coded Matlab galore, pondering Python for this project). General system components: Sensor - [something - RasPi or Arduino I guess] - laptop (running debian) - GUI displaying continuous sensor reading Sensor: I've web-searched the hell out of this, but not finding anything quite answering my questions. I want to continuously measure the distance from the sensor to a bicycle wheel rim braking surface. Material is aluminium, shiny, though not smooth. Biggest problem with the web-search is being swamped by proximity sensor results (on/off) rather than a distance proportional output signal and much lower resolution projects. I rule out IR or optical sensing, now stuck between ultrasonic and inductive sensing, though tending to the latter for a faster response/adjustment to change time. Sensor criteria (other than reasonable $$): - total sensing range: ca.5mm - sensing accuracy 10 to 100micron/ 0.01 to 0.1mm - don't ask if that's needed, a bit of overkill, I know, but a bit of OCD doesn't do any harm, eh? - fast-ish sampling rate (so that when I turn the wheel, the number on the screen updates nice and fast, guess >25Hz is sufficient). [Something - RasPi or Arduino]: I know that I could omit the laptop GUI part (mini-LCD, LED array, etc), but keen to learn/ practice a little Python with this project, so I guess I am tending to the RasPi, but I am open minded. All I want is the analogue sensor out to end up as a digital reading "inside" my computer to be passed to my GUI as a reading. Essentially a mini A2D converter. Not fussed whether the output is in actual distance units or in arbitrary units/ current units (I guess the sensors put out a proportional current signal?). GUI: Depending on the above, how do I best get the signal "into" a Python program? A moderate fast sample rate >25Hz should suffice.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! LaserCycle
