Aluminum from aluminum hydroxide?

I have some aluminum hydroxide and I have been trying to find a way to strip the Al(OH)3 of it's hydroxide ions to form an aluminum precipitate. It's nonsoluble so a reaction in an aqueous solution does not seem to be an option, also considering that the only other more reactive metals than it would ignite upon contact with water anyhow. Does anyone have any ideas how to accomplish this?

cheapest welder for aluminum?

I need to weld 3/16" sheet aluminum for a boat i'm making and want to do it at the cheapest cost. this welder (http://www.harborfreight.com/90-amp-flux-wire-welder-68887.html) says it won't do aluminum (and i'm not sure 90 amps would be enough anyway). Is that true? What if i bought the 180 amp model? Any suggestions for other welders?

How to cut aluminum hard drive platters?

After determining that a hard drive platter is aluminum (I don't want to try to cut the glass ones), how could I cut it neatly?  I'd like to cut out neat rectangles for a small kaleidoscope.  I tried a hacksaw, but it was a messy cut, and I expect it bent the optical surface a bit.  I tried a rotary tool with cut-off discs, but the aluminum chewed up the discs really fast--I could see the discs shrinking before my eyes into tiny circles.

Correctly identify Aluminum, smelting brass

How can I correctly identify aluminum?  Aside from the weight, how do I find out if it is pure or some alloy that will make make even the vultures drop dead when smelted. Owing to a project I'm working on where I wish to cast letters in aluminum for a wind harp, I have been on a search here on the farm. Have found literally 200kg of scrap brass and and about 35g of aluminum! The letters have to be out of aluminum for rust reasons. 2nd Question Does zinc alloy aluminum rust in the same fashion? 3rd Question Brass. I haven't researched it yet, but could anyone give me a clue as to smelting the stuff? Thanks

how do i make an aluminum electrolytic capacitor?

I want to make a capacitor bank with high capacitance and i saw a lot of instructables for high voltage, but the most i got out of one was with aluminum foil and plastic wrap and i only got 14nf. i saw on some sites that the aluminum was electrocoated with aluminum oxide, but i couldn't find any specifics and nothing i tried so far has worked (it just created higher resistance, not capacitance). also, what's a good electrolyte solution, i'm just using water, salt and baking soda.

electrodeposition

I am looking for a feasible DIY method of depositing aluminum from solution or vapor through electrostatic or other means. I've found one possible process using an ethereal solution of Aluminum Trichloride and Lithium Hydride. Will this allow an aluminum electrode to ionize into solution without adding more and more AlCl3? Is there a better way, such as potentially vapor deposition? Has anyone had experience at this? What are potential problems and how would you circumvent them?

I have an idea for a personal cooler... do you think it will work? Answered

I'm thinking of placing one or two peltier cooler units on the side of a large aluminum container, which is filled with water. the peltier units also have heatsinks with fans on them. the fans blow the cold air on the user, while the heat is transferred into the aluminum and thus into the water. the aluminum box would be insulated to keep it from heating up the surrounding air, and the heated water could be dumped and refilled to dispose of the heat. this would allow for a sort of personal cooler without expelling hot air out the other side.

Game Gloves

I've been looking online recently for some sort of "glove" that you would wear for gaming, instead of having a keyboard. Didnt really find anything.. at least in my price range. So i am going to get the Makey Makey tomorrow from a trade with a friend, i figured this was my best bet. My idea for this glove would be that it have either foil on the tips or that sewing yarn that can be used as wire. There would be a thin Aluminum Sheet that you would tap with the appropriate finger. The aluminum sheet would act as the ground. My other idead would be instead of having the Aluminum Sheet have the tech yarn in the palm of your hand, but this would get uncomfortable after time. I want to make this so i could possibly in the future have two gloves one for each hand. Also, if i was to use the special yarn for electronics, i would have to wear to gloves since the yarn would weave in and out of the glove grounding to your finger. Most likely going to be working on this tomorrow or as soon as i can get some cheap gloves. I'll upload pictures then. any suggestions?

What type/shape of metal ( i.e. tubular aluminum) should I use for a robot frame? Answered

I am building a robot. It will be about 1.5 meters long, about 30 centimeters high, about 40 centimeters wide ( all dimensions excluding wheels, tracks, etc.). It would also be nice if the frame could be welded with a homade stick welder, but that isn't a primary concern. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Fixing broken key on apple aluminum keyboard? Answered

I bought myself an apple aluminum keyboard a while ago, it worked perfectly until a few days ago. I noticed the w key was a bit sticky, so i took it apart (with a paper clip) and messed around with it until it unstuck. now the key will not work at all (actually if i plug in the keyboard and hit w it gives me a string of w's until i hit backspace, but i hit it after that and it will not work.  the inside of the key assembly is a bit scratched (i used a metal clip, not plastic coated, and i was getting frustrated) so idk if that is it. it clicks responsibly just like the other keys now, but it felt like there as something underneath before i took it apart. getting rather sick of copy pasting w in  :(

Re-anodizing a macbook pro? Answered

I am getting an old macbook pro in the mail soon and am going to have to pretty much tear it down completely to repair it. I have seen a few guides on anodizing aluminum, and was wondering if maybe, possibly I would be able to anodize my macbook to a different color! Would this require de-anodizing the aluminum? (the model is a late 08 macbook, so I dont know if that is a powder coated one).  It would be awesome If I could color it a nice matte black (my preferred color) Has anyone attempted doing something like this before? I have some scrap brushed aluminum to practice on.. would that work? I know this could be easily accomplished with a black case... but I kind of want to go a bit further than that...

How can I prevent aluminum jewelry from oxidizing?

In my instructable about making an aluminum ring, I made two aluminum rings, one for my girlfriend and one for myself. Mine is still fine; however, hers keeps turning black (oxidizing). I understand this is because she is a girl and her skin pH is different than mine (more basic); but I am curious if there are any techniques on how to prevent this from happening. The ring needs to be polished using aluminum cleaner every other week, but if there was a way to keep its mirror finish, that would be fantastic. Thank you!

What kind of electrodes can I use in a lemon battery?

Dear Instructables community, recently I stumbled upon this instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/The_micro_Lemon_Battery_reusable_1_hour_of_led_l/ and I immediatly recognised it as a nice way to spend an afternoon. Now here comes the question: Are there any alternatives for zinc? For instance this instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/Salt-powered-LED-flower/ uses copper and aluminum foil, instead of copper and zinc. If the previous question is answered with no, then could someone please tell me where I can find zinc? I mean something like: break open this device, there will be some zink in there. If you feel like it then feel free to explain the principles behind electrochemistry to me. Always happy to learn something new. Thanks in advance, Dennis van Rooijen

Distinguish glass hard disk platters from aluminum without marring the reflective surface? Answered

I have hundreds of hard disk platters from disassembled hard drives.  Some are made of glass, some are made of aluminum.  The glass ones, when flexed, shatter into thousands of razor shards which screech across the room. I would like to avoid that in the future.  I only want to use the aluminum ones, but I don't want to mar the reflective surface. I've thought of weighing them, but the platters some from many manufacturers and eras and so the weights won't be consistent.  Magnets don't attract glass or aluminum. Does glass float? (I'm guessing no.)  Is the reflective surface transparent? (I'm guessing no again, but maybe a strong light would work?) There has to be a way....

How can I color aluminum wire without annodizing?

I bought a spool of 14 gauge aluminum wire for chain maille. My goal is to have alternating black and natural colored rings used for the maille. In a household metal working book I found from the 80's, they said to,"Mix 2 tablespoons lye into 1 quart cold water. Add aluminum part for 1-2 minutes. Submerse part into household dye mixed according to manufacturers directions until desired depth of color is achieved. Rinse in cold water".I tried this method using RIT black household dye; however, it was not successful. I am trying to dye the wire both RED and BLACK. If no method for the red is found, I can purchase a short length of anodized red wire; however, If there are any chemical reactions for turning the wire black, that would be great. Thanks!!

Computer PSU wire question? Answered

Hi all, I want to turn an old computer PSU into a lab bench PSU.  After cutting all the connectors at the end of the cables, I've noticed that some of the common (black) wires were made of copper, while some of them were made of nickel \ aluminum (Silverish). The same is true for the +5V (red) cables. It's not the first PSU I noticed that had the different materials, and I was wondering: 1) Why are there two different kinds of wire? 2) Is it OK to ignore the wire material and just splice all the blacks together, and all the reds together? Thanks!

I need a heat sink like this one, please help?

I have been looking to find a long heat sink like this one: http://www.anglia-live.com/products/kw/LAM-4-150-05-V/774353001_HEATSINK-FAN-150MM-5VDC but I can't find one that is cheaper or similar (Other than other models of this). I basically want to make a thin air conditioner with about 18 peltier units. I want one of those heat sinks on the hot side. I then want to do the same thing on the cold side or I want to use a bunch of mini 40x40mm fans on each cold side of the peltier units. Please let me know if you know any similar heat sink designs or if there is a name for this kind of design. Also, if there are no similar heat sinks, could I just go to Home Depot and buy a hollow aluminum square pipe and add a mini PC fan instead of this? I would assume it wouldn't be as effective because of the less surface area, but, it would be cheaper I think.

Safe removal of a ~30' HAM Radio Antenna

Hello all, I have a friend who has a 30 foot (approx) HAM Radio antenna mounted on his garage.  The pole base attaches to two brackets which are anchored to the exterior wall of a garage.  Near the top of the antenna, 3 cable anchors connect to brackets on the roof.  He wants it gone, and wants me to take it.  But, this must be planned out carefully.  The pole could be lowered 3 feet or so, so it makes contact with the ground.  It could be used as the fulcrum to lower this down into his backyard.  Power lines are not in proximity.  If several people were on the roof, could that point be used to lower the antenna gently to people on the ground?  My concern is that the construction looks aluminum. The pole is 2" steel pipe.  ButI cannot be certain on the actual antennd contruction or weight.  There are 3 or 4 small boxes mounted at various heights on the pole.  I can't image they weigh too much.  Can anoyone tell me what there are used for?  Occasionally, a red led will blink on the bottom of the case. I am excited to acquire components that one day may help me get my amateur license.  But I am concerned about how to safely do this, and will not attempt without a very clear plan.  I don't want it to end up being too heavy, and slingshotting the people on the roof (like something that would happen to red green).  I also need to insure his roof is not damaged.  I think the brackets will be left on, and the cable cut at the base.   Any knowledge is greatly appreciated!

But one of my friends a few days ago told me that instead of etching his layout on copper, he used the bottom of an altoids tin. he said all he did was sand the bottom until there was no paint of the altoids can and then he etched his layout. (Chemical bath, toner, etc.) So my question is, Does anyone know how to etch custom layouts (toner layouts) on tin or aluminum? **I figure this could save people some money and time on some projects. :)
