Passive home automation

Hey all, been working out idea's for a project recently, and kind of stuck on one point. So the plan is to do up some automation in my basement. Right now I was starting with my desk, using a phidget usb relay controller to control desk lamps, move on to insteon for actual ceiling lights, but one thing I want to do would be passive control. So if the system detects me coming down the stairs it will turn on the ceiling lights, then when it detects me sitting at my computer the computer will log me in. I was thinking rfid, but not finding any hobby boards for rfid with ranges over a couple of centimeters. I know people have done this with bluetooth, but on testing my computer will connect to my phone if I'm just about anywhere upstairs above the computer and kills the point of this whole endeavor so any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

automated hydroponic system ?

Hello, I want to make automated hydroponic grown plant system that will sense condition and provide sufficient Mineral Nutrients for growing hydroponic plant.  we place the seed into water, seed grow into water , growth should start after 2 or 3 weeks.we don’t feed fertilizer until the first set of true leaves appears When seeding develop their true leaves and roots. Its time to feeding fertilize.we need to provide right fertilizer for good growth Most common fertilizer is NPK, after two or three weak or after the first set of true leaves appear we need to fertilize plant. Fertilize approx every two weeks Automated system (small and low cost system) Parameter – conductivity Project part list Electrodes probes Micorcontroller Amplifier or filter Resistor A to D converter Ic Volve or relay Automated system that Add more or less fertilizer into water ,that maintain conductivity range Best time to fertilize plant Time- fertilize plant after their active growth ,after two or three weak or after the first set of true leaves apper we need to fertilize plant ADD small value of NPK into water because small plant take less fertilizer After two weeks Add large value of NPK into water because large plant take large fertilizer Provide enough NPK to complete their life cycle we can measure conductivity of whole solution. how to make Automated system that will Add more or less fertilizer into water on basis of conductivity If plant need more or less fertilizer system  will adjust itself

Home automation with time?

Hey everyone,  Not sure how many of you would have thought about it but there's a kickstarter project that reached it goal a while ago called 'wig wag'. Wig wag is more or less just home automation. I really like the idea, but hate the thought of paying hundreds of dollars for something that is definitely not worth that much.  Mainly what I'm most interested in doing is automate lights to turn on after a certain time due to a motion sensor. So when I walk into a bathroom at 1am, red LEDs will turn on (as they don't affect your eyes like white light does so you'll still be able to see).  There are some other things that could be cool, such as these lights not turning on if there is a certain amount of noise in the house (if I'm awake or maybe even if lights are on?). I'd be using LEDs I'd have some kind of 12v adapter rather than cracking into light switches in my wall. I'd also rather not buy a wifi powerpoint adaptor, (something like http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Power-Supplies/Electrical-Timers/BEF7C027AU?catargetid=1402860417&cadevice;=%7Bdevice%7D) I currently have a raspberry PI and and happy to use it for this but would probably prefer to buy an arduino but I have no experience with this. I have virtually no knowledge on coding so please forgive any ignorance and please give me your patience! It would also be lovely to have some sort of web server to be able to control it all.  Thanks everyone, your help is really appreciated. Pete

I have a concept, i'm hoping someone could help with

I have a unit that i'm thinking of putting wheels/rollers onto, so i can store some DVDs/Blu-rays under my bed. But i started thinking perhaps i can somehow make it automated, so say when i press a button that it comes out. I wouldn't really know where to start, idk even how easy this would be. I did have a quick look to see if anyone had already published anything like this, i can't really say i came across anything, though as i said it was only a quick look.  Any help would be appreciated.

Home automation system configuration?

I have recently purchased a used home automation system off of eBay. The whole package included the following items. 1. Amber Wireless AMB8425-M USB Stick 2. Aeon Z-Stick S2 USB Stick 3. Huawei E173u-2 Boradband USB stick 4. 3 x Zwave Socket adapters 5. 7links NAS Print/ USB Server Photos of these modules can be seen below. The seller was not aware how all these modules can be put together into a home automation system. I googled for sometime and figured out that I can setup an indoor automation solution using only the Aeon-Zwave USB and the Z-Wave socket adapters, and control them using my android phone. Can someone please help me how can i use the remaining modules and setup the automation for remote access as well ? Many thanks

Automated lighting inside wardrobe?

I'm in the middle of custom building a fitted wardrobe.  So far, I have hacked an Ikea PAX Wardrobe to fit into a wall with a custom shape.  The issue I am now facing is how to do the lighting.  On the right side, I have 3 shelves which I want to underlight, and on the left side, there are 2 rails. I had a look at the Ikea wardrobe lights, however they are motion activated, which is no use since the motion sensor would be blocked. Does anyone know how I can rig up some LED strips to maybe some sort of reversible magnetic switch that can be mounted on the doors, or some sort of other solution.  I would need all the parts though, and don't even know where to start. Any suggestions?

Automated arduino Water gun

Hi, Im looking for some advice on a current project.. The idea is to build an arduino controlled water turret that sprays water at cats in my back garden. The basis of the idea is a few PIRs to cover 360 degrees, a stepper motor and possibly a windscreen washer kit to spray the water. I want the project to be portable so dont particually want to have a mains water feed. My main issue is the method of spraying the water, Im considering a 12v pump kit but thinking there could be an issue with how far one of these pumps would actually spray the water. I have an ardunio uno and a couple PIRs and dont want to be spending a great amount of money on the project although if i can find a decent method of firing the water then i could increase the budget slightly.  Any ideas or similar projects out there where i might get some inspiration?  Any help would be appriciated

Automated Delivery Gate Image Capture

Hi everyone, I wanted to see if you guys can give me some advice or point me in the right direction (preferably towards an instructable) to achive my goal.  I am trying to improve upon an access gate. Currently It just opens with a remote controller. The improvements I want to implement are the following: 1. Place cameras to automatically take pictures of the vehicle as soon as it arrives from all angels     I was thinking maybe with an IR sensor of some sort 2. send those images to an email or to a database. 3. have the driver be able to scan documents and upload them to the database or send to an email, and be alerted when they have done so.  I want something like they have at the border checkpoints with those cameras, and also with the document upload. Any feedback is welcome. thank you!

(Arduino) automated macro-photography rail

Hi everyone, I would like to build an Arduino automated macro-photography rail (let's call it AAMR). I'm a decent software engineer and I want to learn electronics, so I'm looking for someone telling me I'm going in the right direction... The idea sounds simple, I want to : 1/ place the subject on the AAMR 2/ input the # of pictures needed to perform a "focus stacking" (https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Focus_stacking) 3/ push the start button and make the AAMR loop n times through the following steps : - trigger the camera to take a picture of the subject - move the subject 1 millimetre toward the camera After a couple weeks reading and day-dreaming, here are my thoughts. I need : - to read more :) - a steeper motor and its driver (I own bipolar steppers and L298 / L293 IC) - to trigger the camera (Canon EOS 70d : remote cable is quite easy to make) - a potentiometer and 2* 7segment displays (input and display the # of pictures) - a start button - a reset button to make the rail come back at position Zero - two "end of course" buttons (not sure about the English terminology), just in case the motor wants to jump over the board - power (5v for the arduino and the logic, 12v for the motors) I. Arduino ---------- First things first, I plan to use an Arduino Uno during prototyping and replace it by a home made board in the final product. Uno has 14 Digital I/O Pins and 6 Analog Input Pins : - stepper => 6 Digital pins (3 ?? if using http://www.bristolwatch.com/L298N/L298N_arduino.htm) - 7segment led => 3 Digital pins if using shift registers (https://www.instructables.com/id/Different-methods-of-driving-7-Segment-LED-display/step5/null/) - start button => 1 Digital pin - reset button => 1 Digital pin - "end of course" buttons => 2 Digital pins - camera trigger => 1 Digital pin (to drive an opto isolator / solid state relay) - potentiometer => 1 Analog pin 14 Digital pins ! Uno should do the job, am I right ? (I know I could use Analog pins as Digital ones, but it seems I don't need it...) II. PSU ------- Next interrogation is about power supply : I don't want a battery powered device and my options are scarce : - ATX PSU supplies both 5 and 12v, but Arduino seems to like >5v, so ATX doesn't seem a good choice - home made PSU from an existing wall wart -> voltage divider to get ~7v and ~14v -> 7805/7812 voltage regulator (may need heatsinks and/or little fan) If I do the math : - Arduino : 50ma - Stepper motor : 700mA max - L298 : 70mA (quiescent current) - 2* 7Segment LED (multiplexed) : 2 * 80mA (estimated) - Shift registers IC (SN74HC595N) : 1ma (optional : Hex inverter 74LS04 : ?? mA) Total : around 980mA... Am I doing right ? I have tons of questions left (Hex inverter, filter capacitors, motor noise reduction, solid state relays...), but it's a good start :) Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for your answers ! D

In over my head - pH automation

Hi all,I'm in need of help. Due to my previous jobs and general knowledge a friend has asked me if I could build an automatic pH regulation system that will monitor and maintain two tanks (it sounded easy to me at the time) but I've suddenly found myself out of my depth.Having spent long evenings searching on the web and on here, I've seen a few builds of monitors and a couple of dosing systems but none are just what is wanted as they are only set up for single tanks, or not combined into an auto-doser, or too "over-tech'd" or multi-purpose orientated and I don't have the knowledge to adapt or alter things to my requirements. Plunging straight in at the deep end with no real idea of what I'm doing and can actually be done, I'm thinking I should be able to (theoretically) assemble and program an Arduino controlled system, with the one box doing the job of monitoring and regulating both tanks independently, so two sensors, pumps etc., from what I gather it's by adding different boards to the base unit (I did say I know nothing). I don't need wifi or anything like that, just a simple device with a basic display showing the current values that will sit there and just do the job.I think I have the capability to actually build and program the thing having a background in electrics and a little knowledge of relay control systems - not electronics, I start getting lost just after the transistor/diode level and BASIC is more my programming level (yes, I may be THAT old, but I'm still trying to learn), and so what would really help me is if anyone out there can point me towards a site or pages where I can find the info I need, hopefully that doesn't assume years of prior experience, to either build or adapt something to what I want, or even aim me towards someone who could be able to supply me a design and components list, either for fee or free. Cheers!

Automated dimming LED Aquarium light with moonlights? Answered

The array of LEDs for daytime use can slowly 'awaken' over the course of an hour then the after a specified length of time, the daylights slowly turn off then start to slowly turn on moonlights. I saw an instructable that showed how to mimic the outside lighting to replicate that in the tank but I don't have my aquarium that close to a window so I'd rather it be based upon a programmable clock.

Home automation: doorbell analog door phone intercom?

Answer doorbell with home phone: I would like to create a setup in which a visitor rings the front doorbell that rings our home phones.  When we answer a phone it will act as an intercom so we can communicate with the people outside the front door.  There is no doorbell system in place so I am essentially starting from scratch.  I'd prefer doing this in an "analog" fashion since we are in a rural environment with unreliable power and no cell reception.   Basically, I want to know if there's an easy/affordable DIY alternative to the several hundred dollar door phone systems I see available for sale. I would also like to install a remote electric door strike so I can lock/unlock the front door via our landline. New phone shopping: I need to buy a new home phone system anyway, since my mom only uses the speakerphone on the handsets and callers complain they can't hear her well.  Features I'd like: --Power back-up operation (handsets work even in a power-outage) --"Eco-Mode" where it consumes less power when you use it closer to the base --Excellent speakerphone on handset --Long battery life out of charger --Lightweight, easy to hold/grip handsets with large easy to press buttons and clear display There's several Panasonic models I've looked at that seem to fit the bill.  I'll admit I was initially tempted by the new Vtech video doorbell phone, but there's many characteristics about the actual phone/handsets that would make it difficult to use. I wondered if getting a Bluetooth-enabled phone would be advantageous if a handsfree calling device could be connected, just like in the car but for the home phone.  But I don't know how to do that, if it's possible. Just thought I'd mention the new phone shopping in case someone has any advice on best selections based on current home automation desires.

Are there any common timers that are programmable to the second? (my sprinkler timer is programmable only to the minute)

We are using a sprinkler timer to automate the opening and closing of a ball valve by linear actuator. The problem is the sprinkler timer is only programmable to the minute, so it opens, lets water flow for a minute, and then closes. This wastes water as we only need to empy the tank for 10-ish seconds. Any timers that are programmable to the second?

EcoDimmer: New hardwired/DC LED lighting for DIYs

Hello everyone,My name is Mark Gilmore, and I am the owner/president of Omnipotence Software. We have been developing automation software since 1990, our primary product being "ECS"(http://OmnipotenceSoftware.com/wpr.htm).We have been closely following the trend towards LED lighting for a few years now.But when we looked for systems that could be automated, we found a void in the market. So we decided to make our own:Our "EcoDimmer" controls up to 16 low-wattage (DC) lights or appliances with push-buttons,keypads, and/or automation software (like ECS).To our knowledge, this is the only direct-wired/DC lighting system that can be automated. The EcoDimmer is intended for installers and DIYs.It does not include buttons, lighting, or the dimmer's power supply, as these will varygreatly for different applications. So with the exception of the optional/pre-installed keypad, these must be purchased separately and wired to the unit. But as only 2 connections are required for each, anyone can perform this task with a screwdriver and a knife. For further details, please see http://OmnipotenceSoftware.com/wpe.htm.We welcome any feedback (esp as this is a new product) !Regards,Mark Gilmoresupport@OmnipotenceSoftware.com

Easy automated method to find chronological age of an integrated circuit design? Answered

This is not a question related to a homework or career assignment. This question is an existential question. Specifically, the thing that I am wondering if it exists, or not, is an easy and automated method for finding the chronological date, e.g. a year, Anno Domini (AD) or Common Era (CE), when a named integrated circuit (IC) was introduced.  Preferably this method exists in the form of a free resource on the Web. As an example, the well known 555 timer IC was introduced in the year 1971, and I am reasonably confident that was the year, because the Wikipedia article titled "555 timer IC", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/555_timer_IC contains the words: "Introduced in 1971 by American company Signetics, the 555 is still in widespread use..." And I assume that statement is totally true, because if I can't trust the people who edit Wikipedia, I mean, who can I trust? ;-) Unfortunately, Wikipedia does not have a fact-filled article for almost every IC every sold.  In contrast, a place like www.alldatasheet.com has data sheets for almost every IC ever sold, but, it turns out, the data sheet does not always reveal the year the IC was introduced. To clarify this further, the thing I really want to exist, would be like a web site, with a name like: www.howoldismyic.com, or www.howoldisthisic.com, or www.icdob.com etc. (Please note that none of those URLs point to actual existing web sites, at the time of this writing.) Moreover, I am fantasizing this web site would contain a form, for to enter the name of the IC to look up, and then after hitting the "Submit" button, it would magically tell me what year that IC was introduced to the world, and maybe also which semiconductor company gave birth to it. As some example input and output, the query NE555 would return:  NE555, 1971, Signetics(r) As an additional twist to this fantasy, the query, LM555, would return the same thing, and this magical web page would like, know, that LM555 was a later version of the same IC, except produced by a different manufacturer, namely National(r); i.e LM555 was National's version of the 555 timer . If you have read this far, I congratulate you!  And I appreciate your eyeball time! If you are wondering about my motivation for this question, it is just that think the year an IC was introduced would be a very useful metric, like for answering more specific questions, like: The SG3524 and LTC3780 are ICs used for making switchmode power supplies.  Which of these ICs is more modern? I.e which IC was introduced latest? It turns out, the answer to this question is: The SG3524 is older (introduced first).  The LTC3780 is younger (introduced second). The SG3524 was introduced (I am guessing) in 1977, and that guess is based on some cryptic scribbles in a data sheet for the SG3524, published by Texas Instruments(r). The exact characters were: "SLVS077D – APRIL 1977 – REVISED FEBRUARY 2003" and I am just naively interpreting that blurb to mean the SG3524 was introduced in 1977. Regarding the LTC3780, I think it was introduced some time in the 1990s.  Looking at its datasheet, from Linear Technology(r), I could not find an obvious description of what year it was first introduced, but the first page mentions some US Patent numbers, and looking up those patent numbers, gives dates circa the early 1990s. So the LTC3780 is the younger than the SG3524. However to find that answer, I kind of had to do a bunch of reading of datasheets, and US Patent numbers, and that method took a little bit of work. My question:  Is there an easier way to find out how old (or young) an IC is?  More specifically is there an existing resource on the Web, like a free database, or a IC history site, or something where I can essentially "look up" the year an IC was introduced. By the way there is no absolutely zero urgency attached to this question.  So please answer if you feel like it,  and don't if you don't. I thank you for reading this.  My name is Jack A Lopez, and I approve of this message.

Where would I begin if I wanted to create a commercially available gadget (Think home automation)?

I have an idea for a gadget that I would like to market. Lets say it a home automation system with a touchscreen where you can play bluetooth music, read Rss feeds etc. Where would I begin to make it? I have indepth experience in programming but I don't understand what system I would build this upon. I doubt I would go out and buy a raspberry pi and design it on that because that is their own hardware and OS that is not mine? I fee like an Arduino is not powerful enough for a clean and intricate UI with a touch screen. Does anyone know what system/board I would use for this idea?
